Improving Federal Regulation of Medical Algorithms The Regulatory Review

Scholar argues that FDA should reform its regulation of algorithm-based medicine. In emergency situations, doctors have little time to save the lives of trauma patients. Gunshot wounds, car crashes, and other life-threatening harms often cause severe blood loss, which is the leading cause of preventable death when trauma puts patients' lives on the line. To manage the demands of these emergency cases, physicians today complement their medical skill-set with a new tool: algorithms. But in a recent paper, a legal scholar argues that federal regulatory reforms must occur to unleash the full lifesaving potential of algorithms in health care.

I was pleased to be part of the discussion, given that data Artisans has worked extensively in developing platforms and frameworks based on which many machine learning and artificial intelligence applications are being built. As more and more businesses transform from a product-centric to a service and customer-oriented approach building a strong data infrastructure is fundamental in leveraging data and responding to market changes in real time. The roundtable discussion included such topics as how machine learning and artificial intelligence can move businesses and institutions in this direction, and specifically, how this technology can make them more responsive to data and thus become more competitive and service-oriented. The group also discussed current initiatives and future measures and agreed on setting a common national strategy for promoting the adoption of artificial intelligence in Germany and Europe.

Just a quick video to let you know that Japan has just announced that it is going to make everyone, even primary school students, AI-literate within the next few years. The Japanese government wants primary school children to be as familiar with AI as they are with the 3Rs. Facing a severe skills shortage of technicians, Japan is having to rethink its entire tertiary system and government governance of technical infrastructure, which includes a massive reskilling operation. AI is deemed to be a key plank of Japan's economy in the near future. But skilled AI technicians are in short supply and Japan's immigration policies are being looked at with a view to opening the country up to foreign workers.


4 ways AI can change democracy for the better

Artificial intelligence has without question been a menace to modern democratic society. Malicious bots notably interfered in the 2016 presidential election in the United States, and they meddled in Mexican elections held earlier this week. Perhaps even more alarming is a study published last month that found the majority of people in democratic societies around the world do not believe their voices are heard. Modern systems of government have been challenged in recent years by both disillusionment in institutions and foreign adversaries deploying malicious forms of AI. Something has to give, and while AI is often painted as the villain automating away everyone's jobs, it's just a tool, and one that can be used in powerful ways to improve lives.


DeepMind, NHS use anonymized patient data in AI to avoid regulatory hurdles

Britain's National Health Service (NHS) announced in a recent press release that it will anonymize patients' personal health data before sharing it with Alphabet's DeepMind. The process could help the pair more effectively train machine learning-based healthcare tools without the risk of compliance issues. As noted by our sister site ZDNet, the two companies use the data to analyze blood results and detect risk of acute kidney injuries or other illnesses. Back in 2016, the NHS and Google's DeepMind received major flack for personal data being shared without explicit consent from patients, but the anonymization of the data could help alleviate these concerns. "The new de-identification process (known as De-ID) will protect patient privacy by de-identifying a person's records in a consistent way," said privacy engineering company Privitar in the release.

I expected my summer engineering internship to include things like updating old 3-D models, creating part designs, and learning the ins and outs of how a company works. I didn't expect it to involve learning to make my colleagues obsolete. It was the summer after my sophomore year of college, at a company in Southern California. At the beginning of the internship, my manager asked me to implement 3-D printing to streamline a complicated mold-making process. I have long been obsessed with 3-D printing (I own two machines myself), so I was thrilled to introduce it into the business.


The world's smallest surgical robot is almost ready for the operating room

By the end of 2018, surgeons in the United Kingdom could have a new assistant in the operating room: Versius, the world's smallest surgical robot. Created by CMR Surgical, the bot is essentially three robotic arms attached to a mobile unit about the size of a barstool, according to a recent report by The Guardian. A surgeon controls the bot from a control panel, guiding the arms as they carry out keyhole procedures (surgeries performed through tiny incisions in the body -- much less invasive than open surgeries, which require much larger incisions). CMR Surgical is in the process of getting Versius approved by UK regulators so that it can move out of the training room and into the operating room. The company hopes to pass this regulatory hurdle before the end of this year.


Machine Learning, Cloud, Compliance and Business Awareness Drive Cybersecurity

Senior businesses awareness of cybersecurity, legal and compliance issues and cloud-delivered products are some of the trends driving the industry, according to Gartner. According to its Top Six Security and Risk Management Trends, Gartner said that "business leaders are becoming increasingly conscious of the impact cybersecurity can have on business outcomes" and encouraged security leaders to harness this increased support and take advantage of its six emerging trends "to improve their organization's resilience while elevating their own standing." In regard to cloud computing, which Gartner said is affected by trends 3 and 6, "new detections technologies, activities and authentication models require vast amounts of data that can quickly overwhelm current on-premises security solutions" and this is driving a rapid shift toward cloud-delivered security products which "are more capable of using the data in near real time to provide more-agile and adaptive solutions." Also with regards to emerging trends, Gartner predicted that "by 2025, machine learning will be a normal part of security solutions and will offset ever-increasing skills and staffing shortages" as well as offering solutions to multiple security issues, such as adaptive authentication, insider threats, malware and advanced attackers. Peter Firstbrook, research vice-president at Gartner, said: "Look at how machine learning can address narrow and well-defined problem sets, such as classifying executable files, and be careful not to be suckered by hype.


Australian airport begins passport-free biometric check-in trials

Qantas passengers who travel through Sydney Airport will be among the first groups of travelers to use facial recognition in automated check-ins, bag drop, lounge access and plane boarding. The system will ultimately allow officials to process travelers quicker. Early trials which provide a glimpse into a seamless, passport-free future are currently underway, but their implementation is provoking mixed responses. Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert is optimistic: "There will be no more juggling passports and bags at check-in and digging through pockets or smartphones to show your boarding pass -- your face will be your passport and your boarding pass at every step of the process". The biometrics system has also been endorsed by the Australian federal government, which promised to pump $22.5 million AUD ($16.6 million) to ensure facial recognition technology would be adopted across all Australian airports.
