Chinese government start-up expands plans for face-reading AI
A creepy surveillance start-up backed by the Chinese government is expanding its artificial intelligence-powered face-reading operations. Beijing firm Megvii has announced it is shifting its powerful Face facial recognition technology beyond China after securing a distributor in Thailand. Megvii's world-leading Face technology uses AI to identify people by their facial features, allowing police to spy on'anyone, anywhere' without them knowing. The software has already been used by Chinese police departments to arrest more than 3,000 fugitives by instantly scanning crowds of thousands in busy cities. The company says its software has many potential uses beyond law enforcement, including in financial services, retail, and identity verification.

Secretive US 'Phantom Express' hypersonic spaceplane passes key tests
A major milestone for a secretive hypersonic spaceplane the military could one day use to launch satellites at short notice have been completed. The reusable Phantom Express spaceplane will take off vertically and land horizontally, and is being built by Boeing as part of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Experimental Spaceplane program, and its engines have now passed a key test. It is hoped it will play a crucial role in future space warfare, allowing military bosses to launch satellites and replace damaged ones within hours. The reusable Phantom Express spaceplane will take off vertically and land horizontally, and is being built by Boeing as part of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Experimental Spaceplane program. The Pentagon's research arm now test-fired the new rocket engine 10 times in as many days, a critical step toward a space plane that can put satellites in orbit on a daily basis, project officials said.
Report From PwC Says AI Won't Kill The Job Market, But Keep It Steady

Their prediction, in a new report out Tuesday, is that it'll all balance out in the end. But the rise in robots and machine-learning software will make the country more productive over the next two decades, growing at a 2% annual clip, to put nearly the same number of jobs back in the system: 7.2 million, PwC estimates. To be clear those new jobs won't involve building robots or coding AI-powered software, which will only make up around 5% of employment, says John Hawksworth, PwC's chief economist. Instead around 1.5 million, or 22%, of the new jobs will be in health and social work.
Computer Vision Startup Yitu Nabs $100 Million in Funding
Shanghai-based computer vision company Yitu announced today that it has acquired an additional US$100 million in funding, with China Industrial Asset Management as the sole investor this round. Yitu is one of China's four AI unicorns, along with Face, Cloudwalk and SenseTime. On June 12th, 2018, Yitu completed its C Round with US$200 Million from GC Capital, ICBC International, and SPDB International. This new funding raises Yitu's valuation to over US$2.3 billion. Yitu was found in 2012 and focuses on computer vision, natural language processing, knowledge reasoning, intelligent hardware, and robotics.

Like many parents in the United States, Rob Glaser has been thinking a lot lately about how to keep his kids from getting shot in school. Specifically, he's been thinking of what he can do that doesn't involve getting into a nasty and endless battle over what he calls "the g-word." It's not that Glaser opposes gun control. A steady Democratic donor, Glaser founded the online streaming giant RealNetworks back in the 1990s as a vehicle for broadcasting left-leaning political views. It's just that any conversation about curbing gun rights in America tends to lead more to gridlock and finger-pointing than it does to action.

There are a number of direct applications of AI relevant for national security purposes, both in the United States and elsewhere. Kevin Kelly notes that in the private sector "the business plans of the next 10,000 startups are easy to forecast: Take X and add AI."1 There is similarly a broad range of applications for AI in national security. Included below are some examples in cybersecurity, information security, economic and financial tools of statecraft, defense, intelligence, homeland security, diplomacy, and development. This is not intended as a comprehensive list of all possible uses of AI in these fields. Rather, these are merely intended as illustrative examples to help those in the national security community begin to think through some uses of this evolving technology.
Hacker Sold US Air Force Drone Documents on Dark Web for $150
While tracking criminal activity on dark web marketplaces, a threat intelligence team Insikt Group of the security research firm Recorded Future discovered a hacker selling classified military documents for a meager amount of $150-200 on the Deep Web and Dark Web forum. According to the research team, the hacker got a hold on the documents after they intruded by exploiting an FTP vulnerability in Netgear routers that's been known for two years. Once the hacker got an access to the router, the intruder was easily able to invade into a captain's personal computer and steal a cache of sensitive documents. "While such course books are not classified materials on their own," Recorded Future said, "in unfriendly hands, they could provide an adversary the ability to assess technical capabilities and weaknesses in one of the most technologically advanced aircrafts." The documents include contained sensitive materials, like "the M1 Abrams maintenance manual, a tank platoon training course, a crew survival course, and documentation on improvised explosive device (IED) mitigation tactics."
Temporally Evolving Community Detection and Prediction in Content-Centric Networks

In this work, we consider the problem of combining link, content and temporal analysis for community detection and prediction in evolving networks. Such temporal and content-rich networks occur in many real-life settings, such as bibliographic networks and question answering forums. Most of the work in the literature (that uses both content and structure) deals with static snapshots of networks, and they do not reflect the dynamic changes occurring over multiple snapshots. Incorporating dynamic changes in the communities into the analysis can also provide useful insights about the changes in the network such as the migration of authors across communities. In this work, we propose Chimera, a shared factorization model that can simultaneously account for graph links, content, and temporal analysis. This approach works by extracting the latent semantic structure of the network in multidimensional form, but in a way that takes into account the temporal continuity of these embeddings. Such an approach simplifies temporal analysis of the underlying network by using the embedding as a surrogate. A consequence of this simplification is that it is also possible to use this temporal sequence of embeddings to predict future communities. We present experimental results illustrating the effectiveness of the approach.

Lockheed Martin has smashed the record for the world's biggest 3-D printed part built for space. The aerospace giant built a 3-D printed titanium vessel to be used for satellite fuel tanks that measures 46 inches, or just about four feet, in diameter. Before the titanium domes, Lockheed Martin's largest 3-D printed part was a toaster-size electronics enclosure for the Advanced Extremely High Frequency satellite program. Lockheed Martin has smashed the record for the world's biggest 3-D printed part built for space. The vessel is comprised of three parts in all: two 3-D printed domes that function as caps, as well as a titanium cylinder that serves as the body of the tank.
