SpaceX delivers AI robot, ice cream, mice to space station CBC News
The International Space Station on Monday got its first robot with artificial intelligence, along with some berries, ice cream and identical brown mice. SpaceX's capsule reached the station three days after launching from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Station astronaut Ricky Arnold used a large mechanical arm to grab the Dragon capsule as the spacecraft soared above Quebec. The nearly 2,700-kilogram delivery includes the round robot Cimon (pronounced Simon). Slightly bigger than a basketball, the AI robot from the German Space Agency is meant to assist German astronaut Alexander Gerst with science experiments. Cimon's brain will constantly be updated by IBM so its intelligence -- and role -- keep growing.

Scientists have found 12 new moons orbiting around Jupiter, in a breakthrough discovery about our mysterious neighbour. They include an object that scientists have referred to as an "oddball". It is just one kilometre in size, and is flying in the opposite direction to many of the planet's moons – and behaves in an entirely different way to any of the other 78 objects orbiting the planet. As such, it might be responsible for having smashed up many of the other objects that make up the moons around Jupiter. Scientists think the vast number of objects orbiting the planet are probably the result of collisions earlier in its life, which have been captured by Jupiter and now continue to orbit it.

NASA's Opportunity Mars rover has done many great things in its decade-plus of service--but initially, it rolled 600 feet past one of the initiative's biggest discoveries: the Block Island meteorite. Measuring about 67 centimeters across, the meteorite was a telltale sign that Mars' atmosphere had once been much thicker, thick enough to slow down the rock flying at a staggering 2km/s so that it did not disintegrate on impact. A thicker atmosphere could mean a more gentle climate, possibly capable of supporting liquid water on the surface, maybe even life. Yet, we only know about the Block Island meteorite because someone on the Opportunity science team manually spotted an unusual shape in low-resolution thumbnails of the images and decided it was worth backtracking for several days to examine it further. Instead of this machine purposefully heading toward the rock right from the get-go, the team barely saw perhaps its biggest triumph in the rear view mirror.

According to new research by PwC, the enormous impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) could create a considerable number of Scottish jobs over the next 20 years. The company's latest UK Economic Outlook (UKEO), predicts that the deployment of robotics, drones, driverless vehicles and other digital innovations aimed at'smart automation,' could lead to the creation of 558,000 jobs, as the employment market faces its biggest shake-up in a lifetime. The report says that AI will create more jobs as productivity and real incomes rise, and new better products are developed. PwC asserts that AI will reduce prices while labour saving technologies brought about by AI will improve the quality of existing products and enable new products to be brought to market, which also create a need for additional workers. The net effect on this will be most positively felt in London, with 138,000 addition jobs created, or 2.3% of existing job numbers.

When his father died last year, Richard Boyd began using artificial intelligence to model what his dad would be doing today if he had not passed away. "For the past eight or nine months, I can'visit him' and see what he's interested in," he says. The model found that on the Fourth of July his dad would have read about the Air Force, Vietnam, Donald Trump, guns and gun control, and the Santa Fe Railway. He likely would have attended an event at a local Veterans of Foreign Wars post, and created a home fireworks display. He calls this exercise "oddly therapeutic." Nor is he a character in a "Black Mirror" episode.
AI to create as many jobs as it displaces by boosting economic growth, finds report
In a report released today, PwC found that the general net effect of AI on jobs in the UK will be broadly neutral, however, certain sectors will be affected very differently. For example, PwC predict AI having a positive effect on the health and social work sector, where they estimate employment to increase by nearly one million. While they expect a 25% reduction in the number of jobs in the manufacturing industry, this represents almost 700,000 jobs. John Hawksworth, the chief economist at PwC, said: "Major new technologies, from steam engines to computers, displace some existing jobs but also generate large productivity gains." "This reduces prices and increases real income and spending levels, which in turn creates demand for additional workers."
Pentagon sees quantum computing as key weapon for war in space
Top Pentagon official Michael Griffin sat down a few weeks ago with Air Force scientists at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio to discuss the future of quantum computing in the U.S. military. Griffin, the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, has listed quantum computers and related applications among the Pentagon's must-do R&D investments. Quantum computing is one area where the Pentagon worries that it is playing catchup while China continues to leap ahead. The technology is being developed for many civilian applications, and the military sees it as potentially game-changing for information and space warfare. The U.S. Air Force particularly is focused on what is known as quantum information science.

Breathtaking drone footage captured above Kīlauea has revealed the dramatic changes taking place as the Hawaiian volcano continues to spew ash and gas from its summit more than a month into the current eruption. The flyover mission led by the US Geological Survey and Office of Aviation Services on Thursday aimed to investigate the activity within the Halema'uma'u crater, which has been subjected to rapid changes as Kīlauea rumbles with explosions and small earthquakes. As scientists remotely explore the area using unmanned aircraft, the volcano has shown no sign of letting up; just this morning, it launched a plume 6,000 feet above sea level in yet another explosive event.
