Science insurgents plot a climate model driven by artificial intelligence

Sometimes it seems the clouds over climate science just won't lift. Computer models of Earth's climate have multiplied in number, complexity, and computational power, yet they remain unable to answer more precisely some of the questions most on the public's mind: How high must we build sea walls to last until 2100? How bad will heat waves get in the next decade? What will Arctic shipping routes look like in 2030? Climate models all agree that global temperatures will continue to rise in response to humanity's greenhouse gas emissions, but uncertainties stubbornly persist over how quickly that will happen and how high temperatures will go. Tapio Schneider, a German-born climate dynamicist at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, believes climate science can do better. Later this summer, an academic consortium led by Schneider and backed by prominent technology philanthropists, including former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, will launch an ambitious project to create a new climate model.

The 94-employee company claims their platform can assist in predicting compliance risk, automating AML, Know Your Customer (KYC) and Cyber/information security processes. CUBE states that the platform uses machine learning to help enterprises to automatically keep track of global regulatory data and prompt alerts by detecting regulatory changes that pose a compliance risk. The company claims it has created a regulatory'data lake' that covers the regulations for financial services organizations across the globe. We, however, could find no evidence of how extensive their database is.

They eat in Google's cafeterias, ride its commuter shuttles and work alongside its celebrated geeks. They aren't entitled to stock and can't enter certain offices. Many don't have health insurance. Before each weekly Google all-hands meeting, trays of hors d'oeuvres and, sometimes, kegs of beer are carted into an auditorium and satellite offices around the globe for employees, who wear white badges. Those without white badges are asked to return to their desks. Google's Alphabet Inc. employs hordes of these red-badged contract workers in addition to its full-fledged staff. They serve meals and clean offices.

Amazon's Facial Recgonition Software Has a Dangerous Race Problem

In a report published Thursday, the American Civil Liberties Union found that Amazon's facial recognition software mistakenly matched 28 U.S. Congresspeople to photos from a mugshot database. The software--which is already in use by some police departments--was disproportionately inaccurate in identifying people of color. In the test, the ACLU used Amazon's Rekognition software to compare photos of the 535 members of the House and Senate to a database of 25,000 mugshots, for an overall inaccuracy rate of 5%. But while only 20% of the members of Congress are non-white, about 40% of the falsely ID'd legislators were men and women of color. The potential outcomes of such misidentifications in life-or-death police encounters are terrifying to consider.


China plans new era of sea power with unmanned AI submarines

China is planning to upgrade its naval power with unmanned AI submarines that aim to provide an edge over the fleets of their global counterparts. A report by the South China Post on Sunday revealed Beijing's plans to build the automated subs by the early 2020s in response to unmanned weapons being developed in the US. The subs will be able to patrol areas in the South China Sea and Pacific Ocean that are home to disputed military bases. While the expected cost of the submarines has not been disclosed, they're likely to be cheaper than conventional submarines as they do not require life-supporting apparatus for humans. However, without a human crew, they'll also need to be resilient enough to be at sea without onboard repairs possible.


UAE and India sign agreement on Artificial Intelligence

Dubai: The UAE and India on Saturday signed an agreement to spur discussion and explore options for both countries to grow their artificial intelligence economies. The UAE Minister for Artificial Intelligence and Invest India signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the India-UAE Artificial Intelligence Bridge. The partnership will generate an estimated $20 billion (Dh73.4 billion) in economic benefits during the next decade. The UAE-India collaboration will seek to evaluate the dynamic nature of innovation and technology by convening a UAE-India AI Working Committee (TWG) between the UAE Ministry for Artificial Intelligence, Invest India and Startup India. The TWG will meet once a year with the mandate to increase investment in AI start-ups and research activities in partnership with the private sector.


Pentagon plans to publish broad artificial intelligence strategy 'within weeks'

A top Defense Department tech official on Tuesday said the Pentagon is weeks away from publishing its first broad strategy for artificial intelligence. The department plans to release a report detailing its long-term plans for artificial intelligence "within weeks" as leaders increasingly stress the technology's potential to strengthen national security, said Thomas Michelli, the department's acting deputy chief information officer for cybersecurity. Though he didn't disclose specifics regarding the strategy, Michelli said the Pentagon is standing up a number of artificial intelligence capabilities across the enterprise and people should expect "a big announcement" in the weeks to come. The department's updated cyber strategy, which is scheduled to publish shortly before the artificial intelligence plan, will also discuss AI and offer more details on how the military is funneling additional resources into the technology, according to Michelli. "We have to move forward or else we'll lose [our] competitive advantage," he said at a forum hosted by GovernmentCIO Media.


The future of search-and-rescue robots might be centaur, not human

What has six legs, four wheels, and two karate-chopping hands? Centauro is the latest experiment by scientists to find the most adaptable and useful body-shape for robots designed to help in disasters. Usually, these machines are built like humans, with two arms and two legs, but researchers are increasingly finding that hybrid designs offer more flexibility. With its four wheeled legs, Centauro is more stable than a humanoid bot, but still retains the two forward-facing arms needed for manipulating objects like tools and doors. As reported by IEEE Spectrum, Centauro's design builds on that of Momaro, another centaur-robot designed by researchers from the University of Bonn. Momaro was the top European performer at DARPA's Robotics Challenge in 2015, which tested the ability of robots to carry out the sort of tasks they might face in a search-and-rescue mission.
