Principles for Developing a Knowledge Graph of Interlinked Events from News Headlines on Twitter

The ever-growing datasets published on Linked Open Data mainly contain encyclopedic information. However, there is a lack of quality structured and semantically annotated datasets extracted from unstructured real-time sources. In this paper, we present principles for developing a knowledge graph of interlinked events using the case study of news headlines published on Twitter which is a real-time and eventful source of fresh information. We represent the essential pipeline containing the required tasks ranging from choosing background data model, event annotation (i.e., event recognition and classification), entity annotation and eventually interlinking events. The state-of-the-art is limited to domain-specific scenarios for recognizing and classifying events, whereas this paper plays the role of a domain-agnostic road-map for developing a knowledge graph of interlinked events.
Software engineering and the SP Theory of Intelligence
This paper describes a novel approach to software engineering derived from the "SP Theory of Intelligence" and its realisation in the "SP Computer Model". Despite superficial appearances, it is shown that many of the key ideas in software engineering have counterparts in the structure and workings of the SP system. Potential benefits of this new approach to software engineering include: the automation or semi-automation of software development, with support for programming of the SP system where necessary; allowing programmers to concentrate on 'world-oriented' parallelism, without worries about parallelism to speed up processing; support for the long-term goal of programming the SP system via written or spoken natural language; reducing or eliminating the distinction between 'design' and 'implementation'; reducing or eliminating operations like compiling or interpretation; reducing or eliminating the need for verification of software; reducing the need for validation of software; no formal distinction between program and database; the potential for substantial reductions in the number of types of data file and the number of computer languages; benefits for version control; and reducing technical debt.
Facial Recognition: Should We Fear It or Embrace It?
Facial-recognition technology is not new, but it has progressed immensely in the past few years, mainly because of advances in artificial intelligence. Naturally, this has drawn the interest of Silicon Valley, advertising agencies, hardware manufacturers, and the government. But not everyone is thrilled. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and 35 other advocacy groups, for example, sent a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos demanding that his company stop providing advanced facial-recognition technology to law enforcement, warning that it could be misused against immigrants and protesters. Early iterations of the technology, which dates back to the 1960s, were clunky. Police had to create a facial-recognition database, which required a human user to specify key points on a photo of each subject's face, such as the center of pupils and corners of the eyes, mouth, and nose.
DRDO develops indigenous landing gear for UAV
Chennai: An indigenously designed and developed landing gear for the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-Rustom II has been successfully tested on Thursday, a defence statement said. The landing gear developed by a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratory here has undergone low-speed and high-speed taxi trial in Chitradurga, Karnataka, it said. The maiden flight of Rustom II with the indigenously developed gear was successfully carried out. "The Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), the main laboratory of DRDO, has designed and developed the gear," the statement said. Rustom II is a medium-altitude long-endurance UAV designed for carrying out surveillance for the armed forces.
Google's "Don't be evil" apparently doesn't apply in China
Google (Alphabet) recently decided to end its participation in a US military drone program, whereby Google had been supplying its AI technology to the US government. This came after 4,000 Googlers decried the company's involvement in what could turn into "autonomous killing machines," demanding an exit from "the business of war." It was Google deciding to live up to its "Don't be evil" mantra. Apparently that same credo doesn't apply to embracing state-sponsored censorship in authoritarian China. Eight years ago Google co-founder Sergey Brin told The Wall Street Journal, "[I]n some aspects of [China's] policy, particularly with respect to censorship, with respect to surveillance of dissidents, I see some earmarks of totalitarianism." Today, when cash is on the line, the company is marching back into China with a state-censored search tool.

Microsoft is building out A.I., but here's what it thinks could go wrong
Microsoft pointed to new risk factors connected to markets it's going after in its latest annual report, which came out on Friday. The company has warned investors before about the risks involved in cloud services, where it has become a bigger force. Now, as Microsoft seeks to execute on growth opportunities associated with artificial intelligence and devices that connect to the internet, it's flagging potential issues that could arise in those areas. While Microsoft doesn't acknowledge the dustup over its work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in its report for the year that ended on June 30, it does suggest there is the potential for "brand or reputational harm" that could arise from the use of certain AI technologies: Issues in the use of artificial intelligence in our offerings may result in reputational harm or liability. We are building AI into many of our offerings and we expect this element of our business to grow.
