Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the key technologies in today's digital age, revolutionizing many industries, from customer service to autonomous vehicles. The technology is also becoming a key weapon in the fight against cybercriminals. The rise of data breaches has become a critical and concerning issue. In recent years we have seen a tsunami of cyber attacks around the globe, inflicting great costs to both businesses and customers. According to a report titled "Economic Impact of Cybercrime – No Slowing Down," by McAfee and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), cybercrime cost the world between US$445 and US$608 billion in 2017.
Al Qaeda bomb maker killed in Yemen drone strike last year, US official confirms

A top Al Qaeda bomb maker who masterminded a plot to bring down an airliner over Detroit on Christmas Day 2009 was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen last year, a senior U.S. official told Fox News Monday. The Associated Press previously reported that Ibrahim al-Asiri was dead, citing a tribal leader and an Al Qaeda-linked source who said that he was killed in the governate of Marib in eastern Yemen. The tribal leader said that al-Asiri was struck by the drone, along with two or four of his associates, as he stood beside his car. Al Qaeda itself has remained silent about its top bomb maker.
CoQA: A Conversational Question Answering Challenge

Humans gather information by engaging in conversations involving a series of interconnected questions and answers. For machines to assist in information gathering, it is therefore essential to enable them to answer conversational questions. We introduce CoQA, a novel dataset for building Conversational Question Answering systems. Our dataset contains 127k questions with answers, obtained from 8k conversations about text passages from seven diverse domains. The questions are conversational, and the answers are free-form text with their corresponding evidence highlighted in the passage. We analyze CoQA in depth and show that conversational questions have challenging phenomena not present in existing reading comprehension datasets, e.g., coreference and pragmatic reasoning. We evaluate strong conversational and reading comprehension models on CoQA. The best system obtains an F1 score of 65.1%, which is 23.7 points behind human performance (88.8%), indicating there is ample room for improvement. Is there water on the MOON? Scientists claim frozen water could exist on our satellite
Frozen water has been found on the surface of the moon for the first time following the use of high tech satellite scans. Experts say they have detected ice in areas of permanent shadow in the moon's polar regions. They used an imaging technique that can tell different types of water apart, including that on the surface, absorbed into the soil, or bound in minerals. Water has previously been found in the moon's soil, but this is believed to be the first time it has been detected on the surface. Surface water ice was only located in around 3.5 per cent of the moon's shadow covered areas.
Beware the dark side of AI, says Bank of England economist
The rise of artificial intelligence will have a "dark" fallout that is even more disruptive than previous industrial revolutions, the Bank of England's chief economist has warned. Andy Haldane predicted that the "Fourth Industrial Revolution" would be on a much greater scale than those of the 18th to 20th centuries and would lead to huge job losses and societal changes. Automation has already displaced millions of low-skilled jobs. Experts predict that artificial intelligence (AI) will displace millions more roles in the next two decades as technologies such as driverless cars and lorries and software that can perform increasingly sophisticated roles come into use. The Serious Fraud Office already uses AI instead of barristers to sift through case documents to identify relevant evidence.
Nasa captures superhot particles erupting from the sun's magnetic field
A new Nasa image captures the sun as you've never seen it before. The image shows superhot particles usually invisible to the naked eye erupting from the star's surface as a series of stunning arched lines. The particles are the result of nuclear fusion explosions - one of the most powerful events in the universe - that are responsible for the Northern Lights. The Nasa image was created using a computer model that took a real image of the sun and overlayed it with scientific readings of solar particles. Nasa has captured the sun's magnetic field erupting with a stunning computer-enhanced image.
Artificial Intelligence – A Counterintelligence Perspective: Part I
Artificial intelligence will change the world. Because so many people and companies believe this, AI and the entire technological ecosystem in which it functions are highly valuable to private-sector organizations and nation-states. That means that nations will try to identify, steal, and corrupt or otherwise counteract the AI and related assets of others, and will use AI against each other in pursuit of their own national interests. And that presents the United States and its allies with a classic counterintelligence problem in a novel and high-stakes context: How do we protect a valuable national asset against a range of threats from hostile foreign actors, and how do we protect ourselves against the threat from AI in the hands of adversaries? In the broad and diverse discussion of artificial intelligence in the global technological and economic infrastructure of the future, this question has received remarkably little attention. In this post and others to follow, I will endeavor to explore some of the counterintelligence risks and problems presented by AI and the AI ecosystem. I'll first talk about the general problem of AI and counterintelligence and then, in later posts, dive into some of the specific areas that cause me the greatest concern in this sphere. Colombia Tests Drones to Kill Plants Used for Cocaine
BOGOTÁ, Colombia--With drug crops booming, Colombia's police are busily testing whether drones carrying defoliants can efficiently kill the leaf used to make cocaine and win the support of Trump administration officials concerned about this country's growing capacity to supply drugs to American consumers. Antidrug officials here say that in recent weeks they have deployed 10 drones, each weighing 50 pounds when loaded with herbicide, in southwest Nariño province. The small, remotely guided aircraft destroyed hundreds of acres of coca in a first round of tests, said police and the company contracted by the government to supply the drones. Colombia's new president, Iván Duque, said that he wants some kind of aerial fumigation of coca fields, which expanded 160% to 516,000 acres from 2012 to 2017, the White House reported in June. But he prefers drones over planes to drop the herbicide, which would mitigate damage to legal crops growing adjacent to coca fields.
How AI for healthcare can overcome obstacles and save lives
British Prime Minister Theresa May pledged in May that she would invest substantially in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect cancer in its early stage. This technology is expected to save 22,000 lives each year by 2033. French President Emmanuel Macron also aims to use AI to improve healthcare. He announced in March an investment of 1.5 billion euros (USD 1.7 billion) in AI development by 2022 to allow France to compete with China and the United States. 'Although Al has great potential, there are many obstacles to overcome for it to be widely accepted by the healthcare community.'
