Leader of ISIS affiliate in Afghanistan killed in US drone strike, officials say
The leader of an ISIS affiliate in Afghanistan who was responsible for a spate of recent bombings that left hundreds of civilians dead was killed in an American drone strike, U.S. officials told Fox News on Sunday. The deputy spokesperson for Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani announced the death of ISIS-K leader, Abu Sayeed Orakzai, a U.S. military spokesman said. Next weekend, a new U.S. military commander will be taking over in Afghanistan, Lt. Gen. Scott Miller, the former head of Joint Special Operations Command which oversees the elite commando units Delta Force, SEAL Team 6 and the 75th Ranger Regiment. The U.S. military has doubled its air strikes in Afghanistan over the past year and increased them fivefold over 2016 levels.

HIROSHIMA--Students here are recreating the lives of people devastated by the atomic bombing on Aug. 6, 1945, by vividly colorizing photos taken before the city was leveled by the nuclear attack. Students from Hiroshima Jogakuin Senior High School combine artificial intelligence technology and interviews with atomic bomb survivors to produce realistic coloring of black-and-white photos provided by hibakusha. Monochrome pictures snapped before and during World War II are automatically colorized with artificial intelligence. The processed photos are shown to hibakusha so colors can be manually adjusted based on their accounts. Converting one black-and-white photo into color takes from one week to several months, and 140 pictures have been colorized since November.

The Pentagon Wants AI to Take Over the Scientific Process
The Pentagon's research arm is looking for teams to build an artificial intelligence tool that can automatically generate, test and refine its own scientific hypotheses. By essentially automating steps of the scientific process, the tool would let top decision-makers take discoveries from the lab and rapidly apply them to the real world, according to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. "Automation of model-based inference procedures could increase the speed and accuracy with which these models can be used to address key questions of national security by orders of magnitude," officials wrote in a request for information published Aug. 17. They said the system could be used to verify the results of scientific studies and monitor "fragile economic, political, social or environmental" events. The Automating Scientific Knowledge Extraction, or ASKE, project comes as the first research opportunity under DARPA's newly launched Artificial Intelligence Exploration program, which aims to develop next-generation artificial intelligence applications.
