Fight Blight with ArcGIS and Artificial Intelligence

In order for communities to fight blight, it is essential to know the condition of properties. Historically performing property condition surveys required inspectors to physically visit properties, fill out forms and take pictures. For many communities, this was a slow and expensive process. The Property Condition Survey configuration available with ArcGIS significantly reduces the time and cost associated with performing property surveys by applying artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to street-level property photos and automatically calculate a blight probability for every property. Once blight probabilities are calculated communities can take action against individual properties to fix blight or make policy changes to reverse neighborhoods that are blighted or trending toward blighted.


The threat of killer robots

Artificial intelligence (AI) has a growing number of applications in the security and military areas. It facilitates manoeuvres in the field, and can save lives when things go wrong. It also boosts the performance of armies by providing robot allies to combat forces. According to some experts, Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS) are creating a "Third Revolution" in warfare, after gunpowder and nuclear weapons. It is time we start worrying about the day when armies of robots are capable of conducting hostilities with full autonomy, without humans to command them.

On May 16, via a video link, US President Donald Trump "addressed" a conference in Tianjin from Washington and floored the audience with his almost flawless Chinese. Trump highlighted the big leaps made by artificial intelligence or AI, but what impressed the audience more was the US president's tone - his Chinese intonations, inflections and pitch were near perfect. Well, as it transpired, the voice was not really Trump's, after all, but that of an AI-enabled voice technology developed by iFlytek Co Ltd. And, for the record, unlike his granddaughter, Trump hardly knows any Chinese. The iFlytek technology demonstrated its speech synthesis capability - it can produce an unbelievably human-like voice.

The possibilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) seem to be endless, as it can be used to analyze and interact with data in a way that no human could have ever imagined. AI was designed with the intentions of advancing science for a greater good, however, there is currently a hot debate in the field regarding AI and ethics- as some recent applications of AI have begun to transgress societal morality. Per Google's seven ethical principles recently published, the intent for AI is: to be socially beneficial, avoid creating or reinforcing unfair bias, be built and tested for safety, be accountable to people, incorporate privacy design principles, uphold high standards of scientific excellence, and to be made available for uses that accord with these principles. Google released their seven ethical principles in response to the panic by their employees earlier this year when the firm signed a contract with the Department of Defense, as the idea of AI fused with warfare technology is a scary thought for many. These principles diffuse the idea that Google is merging AI and warfare technology, and will hopefully become the gold standard of principles in the world of AI.


Multi-university collaboration will use data science to find the next El Nino

The El Nino and La Nina patterns in the Pacific Ocean are notorious for their long-distance effects on weather as far away as Africa and the Midwestern United States. But climate experts also know of several other such patterns, known as teleconnections, and believe that there are many more to be discovered. The new TRIPODS Climate project, a collaboration among the University of Wisconsinโ€“Madison, the University of Chicago, and the University of California, Irvine, will develop novel data science tools to sniff out these hidden patterns, improving weather forecasts and scientific understanding of global climate.

The Pentagon is investing $2 billion into artificial intelligence

The Pentagon's high-tech research agency laid the groundwork for the Internet, stealth aircraft and self-driving cars. At its 60th anniversary conference on Friday, DARPA announced a $2 billion investment to push the frontier of AI forward. "We think it's a good time to seed the field of AI," John Everett, the deputy director of DARPA's Information Innovation Office, told CNNMoney. "We think we can accelerate two decades of progress into five years." Artificial intelligence, which lets machines perform tasks traditionally done by humans, is a trendy topic in technology and business circles. For example, Google recently delighted and alarmed observers when it showed how an AI system could call a restaurant and book a reservation while sounding entirely human.
