BAE Systems selected to bid in AI, machine learning R&D contract

The award is a nine-year, indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract with a ceiling value for all future work estimated at $28 billion. BAE Systems is one of 15 companies selected to compete for R&D and support task orders, which are expected to exceed $15 million. These task orders will be awarded by the Air Force Installation Contract Agency/KD Offutt AFB, Nebraska and support the Department of Defense (DoD) Information Analysis Center Program Management Office. "This large-scale contract provides us with a tremendous opportunity to reach across BAE Systems and leverage our own internal research and development investments to help the DoD solve its most difficult mission challenges," says Al Whitmore, president of BAE Systems' Intelligence & Security sector. "We are excited to help the government leverage innovations in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and directed energy technologies to enhance the security and effectiveness of our warfighters across physical and digital domains."


Montreal soars to new heights, but headwinds still buffet the summit

In a sun-lit lecture space at Ecole Polytechnique, Joelle Pineau explained how a machine can create a recipe from a photo of a tourtiere. It's not easy as pie, but rather the fruit of 12 months of experimentation at Facebook's new artificial intelligence lab, which she heads up in Montreal. "I would like the robot that goes with it and then makes the recipe," joked Pineau, an associate professor at McGill University. Facebook's lab has already expanded to 20 specialists from four since its launch in September 2017, with plans to move to a bigger facility come January. Microsoft Corp. and Google parent Alphabet Inc. have both launched Montreal-based AI labs in the past two years, and aim to hire scores more researchers in the next year or so.

When your computer breaks, it's always recommended to go back to the manufacturer before trying other repair options. They are likely to have a guaranteed fix and sometimes can do it free of charge, with third-parties coming in handy if the fix is simple or if the manufacturer is charging too much. For users of Apple's iMac Pro and 2018 MacBook Pros, however, the manufacturer and its authorized service partners may soon be the only option. According to documents received by MacRumors and Motherboard, the computers will need to run a proprietary piece of Apple diagnostic software once parts are replaced before computer can be used again, locking users out otherwise. The new policy affects repairs for the 2018 MacBook Pro's display, Touch ID fingerprint sensor, casing, keyboard, battery, trackpad, speakers and internal logic board, MacRumors said.

British security services speak out over claims China planted tiny chips in Apple and Amazon computers

British security services have spoken out about claims that China managed to plant tiny chips in computers that made their way across the US. The bombshell report came from Bloomberg News this week and alleged that special agents in the People's Liberation Army had dropped tiny components into computer hardware before it left the country. It would eventually go on to be used by companies including Amazon, Apple and many others, as well as the US defence establishment. Such a hack would allow spies to look in on messages being sent across Apple's cloud services, for instance, and intercept messages as soon as they are sent. And a hardware breakthrough of that kind would mark a step change in the kind of hacks that are possible, since they could not be easily found or fixed.


Patent Office: Can AI, Quantum Determine If a New Idea Is Really New?

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued a request for information seeking industry and academia feedback on the latest artificial intelligence tools to bolster the agency's internal search function. Patent examiners have a tough job: reviewing millions of applications submitted each year to discover whether they truly add anything unique to the body of human knowledge. As the amount of knowledge--data--in the world increases exponentially, those examiners are looking for help from a digital counterpart. When an application is submitted to USPTO, an examiner is assigned the case and begins sifting through all available data related to the invention in an effort to find "prior art," or "all information that has been made available to the public in any form before a given date that might be relevant to a patent application's claims of novelty and non-obviousness," according to the office. This task is fast becoming too large for any human to accomplish on their own.


DeepMind expands AI cancer research program to Japan

DeepMind is furthering its cancer research efforts with a newly announced partnership. Today, the London-based Google subsidiary said it has been given access to mammograms from roughly 30,000 women that were taken at Jikei University Hospital in Tokyo, Japan between 2007 and 2018. It'll use that data to refine its artificially intelligent (AI) breast cancer detection algorithms. Over the course of the next five years, DeepMind researchers will review the 30,000 images, along with 3,500 images from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and historical mammograms provided by the U.K.'s Optimam (an image database of over 80,000 scans extracted from the NHS' National Breast Screening System), to investigate whether its AI systems can accurately spot signs of cancerous tissue. The collaboration builds on DeepMind's work with the Cancer Research UK Imperial Center at Imperial College London, where it has already analyzed roughly 7,500 mammograms.


Robot dies a day after it was dropped onto an asteroid by Japanese spacecraft

The MASCOT rover that hopped onto an asteroid after being dropped by a Japanese spacecraft has died, a day after it arrived. The little robot hopped onto the rock known as Ryugu and explored around by hopping across its surface. But it could only do so using its built-in battery, which had less than a full day of charge. In the end, MASCOT lasted more than 17 hours, despite having only 16 hours of forecast time. And it before it shut down it sent back all of its findings to Hayabusa-2, the Japanese spacecraft who carried it the 180 million miles away from Earth and then dropped it onto the asteroid.


"Free" Tablets Are Costing Prison Inmates a Fortune

Wayne Snitzky was 18 years old when he was sentenced to prison for murdering a girl four years his junior. It was 1995, beepers were the height of personal technology, and the most sophisticated video game he had played was "Leisure Suit Larry," a 2D adult-themed computer game that followed the sexual exploits of the sleazy main character. During the 23 years he has been locked up in Ohio's Marion Correctional Institute, Snitzky has been on the periphery of technology's rapid evolution. While he was able to maintain some of his computer skills through a work program with a nonprofit, where he now teaches other inmates basic tech skills such as composing emails and using a word processor, Snitzky's access to communication was limited. But in the early 2000s, inmates at Marion got their first taste of email--though a far different version than the one most users know.
