The conversation about unconscious bias in artificial intelligence often focuses on algorithms that unintentionally cause disproportionate harm to entire swaths of society--those that wrongly predict black defendants will commit future crimes, for example, or facial-recognition technologies developed mainly by using photos of white men that do a poor job of identifying women and people with darker skin. But the problem could run much deeper than that. Society should be on guard for another twist: the possibility that nefarious actors could seek to attack artificial intelligence systems by deliberately introducing bias into them. According to a U.S. government study on big data and privacy, biased algorithms could make it easier to mask discriminatory lending, hiring or other unsavory business practices. Academics and industry observers have called for legislative oversight that addresses technological bias.

Today, the FANUC use case is a proof of the dawn of cognitive factories and how far artificial intelligence (AI) has been able to penetrate into the walls of these factories.

We develop deep Poisson-gamma dynamical systems (DPGDS) to model sequentially observed multivariate count data, improving previously proposed models by not only mining deep hierarchical latent structure from the data, but also capturing both first-order and long-range temporal dependencies. Using sophisticated but simple-to-implement data augmentation techniques, we derived closed-form Gibbs sampling update equations by first backward and upward propagating auxiliary latent counts, and then forward and downward sampling latent variables. Moreover, we develop stochastic gradient MCMC inference that is scalable to very long multivariate count time series. Experiments on both synthetic and a variety of real-world data demonstrate that the proposed model not only has excellent predictive performance, but also provides highly interpretable multilayer latent structure to represent hierarchical and temporal information propagation.

Two Republican congressmembers are seeking a formal investigation into claims that the bidding process for a contentious $10 billion Pentagon contract was rigged in favor of Amazon. The contract in question would give one company full reign over the Defense Department's Joint Enterprise Defense Initiative, or JEDI Cloud, a program that the Pentagon has described as "truly about increasing the lethality of our department." JEDI is part of the DOD's quest to bring military operations into the modern era by partnering with a commercial cloud provider to streamline defense operations, upgrade data analytics programs using artificial intelligence, and provide soldiers with real-time mission data. In a letter to the Defense Department's Inspector General on Monday, House Appropriations committee members Tom Cole (R-Oklahoma) and Steve Womack (R-Arkansas) accused military leaders of violating federal law and departmental ethics standards by moving forward with plans to award the JEDI contract to a single company despite extensive criticism from industry leaders and lawmakers. The cyber attack on British Airways affected even more customers than originally thought, according to its owner IAG. A further 185,000 customers might have had their personal details stolen during the hack, it said.
