AI has broken out of the lab. It's changing how we get to work and how doctors diagnose disease. And now it promises to help prevent illnesses and speed up relief efforts after natural disasters. Kicking off the Washington edition of our GPU Technology Conference Tuesday -- our fourth such show in just over a month -- NVIDIA Vice President for Accelerated Computing Ian Buck announced a partnership between NVIDIA and Carnegie Mellon University to create AI technologies that can help during disasters. "We're now in the age of AI, where every industry will be enabled and powered by AI," Buck told an audience of more than 2,000 developers, entrepreneurs and federal employees at the start of the two-day GTC DC event.


World's top consumer drone maker scores U.S. wins despite security concerns as China trade war takes toll

SAN, FRANCISCO/BEIJING โ€“ DJI, the world's top seller of drones for consumers, has snagged a pair of wins in its effort to court businesses. SZ DJI Technology Co. Ltd. said its latest industrial gadget -- the Mavic 2 -- will soon survey power grids for U.S. utility Southern Co., while American Airlines Group Inc. will test the craft for plane inspections. Those are important alliances for the Chinese company, which is grappling with a U.S. government shut-out, a potentially damaging patent lawsuit and rising American tariffs. Privacy is a particularly thorny issue for DJI -- one of the few Chinese technology giants that's made major strides abroad. Escalating U.S. tensions are fueling concerns about the dominance of a Chinese company in unmanned flying craft.


Public Knowledge Releases Paper Calling for New Artificial Intelligence Authority - Public Knowledge

Today, we're happy to announce our newest white paper, "The Inevitability of AI Law & Policy: Preparing Government for the Era of Autonomous Machines," by Public Knowledge General Counsel Ryan Clough. The paper argues that the rapid and pervasive rise of artificial intelligence risks exploiting the most marginalized and vulnerable in our society. To mitigate these harms, Clough advocates for a new federal authority to help the U.S. government implement fair and equitable AI. "Any individual can be misjudged and mistreated by artificial intelligence," Clough explains, "but the record to date indicates that it is significantly more likely to happen to the less powerful, who also have less recourse to do anything about it." The paper argues that a new federal authority is the best way to meet the profound and novel challenges AI poses for us all. "As artificial intelligence begins to transform our daily lives, it is critical to build an accountability structure that enables the marketplace to harness the vast promises of this technology, while also empowering the public, safeguarding our autonomy and fundamental rights, and protecting against discriminatory mistreatment of historically-vulnerable groups. By establishing an expert authority that coordinates federal engagement on behalf of citizens, we can begin to build public confidence in this technology and its enormous potential benefits, without opening the door to systematic disempowerment and exploitation."


Finnish city Espoo trials artificial intelligence for community support

The AI-based dimension of Espoo's CCP has attracted external interest from many of Finland's 210 other municipalities. The project is happening against a backdrop where the Finnish government has set about reforming the country's local government structure. The merging of smaller neighbouring municipalities is a fundamental part of this reform, as is the centralisation of frontline public services such as healthcare and education. The Local Authorities Reform Bill is expected to reach Finland's national parliament, the Eduskunta, in the second half of 2019. Budget-conscious municipalities, which are to become more self-financing under the proposed reform, are eager to explore the expanded use of customer-centric digital platforms and AI solutions to reduce their operating costs.


Lawyers safe from brave new AI world... for now

Lawyers need not fear an immediate rise of the machines, it emerged today, after a discussion on making arbitration fit for the future concluded that artificial intelligence (AI) will not be able to issue rulings in the near-future. Although panellists said AI would undoubtedly cause changes to the legal profession and have an impact in arbitration disputes, it was accepted a final decision could not be handed over to a machine. International firm Hogan Lovells, which hosted a discussion at its Hong Kong office, asked whether given that AI can assess likely outcomes of cases and perform document reviews, it is realistic to ask if this could be extended to actually making a final ruling. The discussion comes against a continuous debate about the impact of'lawtech'. James Kwan, partner at Hogan Lovells, said there are'few laws' that explicitly ban robots from being decision makers.

Employees at FedEx in the U.S., Telefรณnica in Spain and the National Health Service in the U.K. opened their work computers one day in May 2017 to find they no longer had access to thousands of crucial documents. A message appeared demanding payment in bitcoin to have them restored. The ransomware attack known as WannaCry afflicted more than 200,000 people in 150 countries, according to Europol, and was the largest of its kind in recent history. The threat of this sort of crippling data security breach has tech giants turning to artificial intelligence for solutions. As online hackers increasingly use advanced technology for penetrative attacks, the companies that host our private information also are engaging the most advanced systems available in a bid to protect us.

UK police forced to ground drones after DJI warns that some are falling out of the sky mid-flight

Dronemaker DJI has warned that some of its unmanned aerial vehicles are suddenly falling out of the sky mid-flight. The company says there have been a'small number' of reports surrounding its Matrice 200 series drones, where a power issue is causing them to crash mid-flight. However, the warning has prompted UK police to ground some of their drones. In one case, a drone experienced an'in-flight issue' and landed on the roof of a commercial building.


Waymo Can Finally Bring Truly Driverless Cars to California

Waymo just became the first company allowed to test fully self-driving cars--the kind with no carbon-based beings behind the wheel--in the state of California. The outfit that started life as Google's self-driving car project has been running driver-free cars in Arizona for almost a year, where the state testing rules are far more lax than in California, and where it plans to launch a commercial robo-taxi service by the end of the year. But securing the right to do the same in its home state is still a milestone, and evidence it can win over even comparatively wary regulators to the way of the robot. To begin, the truly driverless cars will test only at up to 65 mph in the southern Bay Area, in Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, and Palo Alto. The company said it will inform local governments before expanding its tests any further.

The result is an AI bot named ClaRAN that scans images taken by radio telescopes. Its job is to spot radio galaxies--galaxies that emit powerful radio jets from supermassive black holes at their centres. ClaRAN is the brainchild of big data specialist Dr Chen Wu and astronomer Dr Ivy Wong, both from The University of Western Australia node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR).
