Artificial Intelligence might be a buzzword in the press – but it has real implications for technology jobs. So what do developers really think about AI? As developers often work with AI and machine learning technologies, many people would assume that a clear picture is forming among the development community about the likely social impact of AI. However, research by Stack Overflow sheds lights on what developers really think about AI – and it paints a split picture. Developers are mainly excited about artificial intelligence. It's reassuring to see strong excitement about the potential benefits of artificial intelligence among the community who will develop and implement it the most.

Donald Trump has become the wrecking ball of the postwar global order--and he clearly revels in its destruction. So far, he has little to show on big-ticket challenges, including Russia, China, North Korea, Middle East peace and Iran, international trade and tariffs, or arms deals. His next big test is this weekend, in Buenos Aires, at the G-20 summit, convening the world's largest economies and weightiest powers. All of those issues will be on his agenda in one venue. On Thanksgiving, Trump--who recently gave his Presidency an A-plus--said he is confident about his prospects at the G-20 summit, including negotiations with China's President, Xi Jinping, to avoid a trade war.


'Amazon Echo for the elderly' uses AI to track people's movements

A tiny white cube that uses Artificial Intelligence to monitor the lives of elderly people who live alone could save thousands of lives, according to its creator. The miiCube, a kind of'Amazon Echo for the elderly', learns people's routines and tracks their movements so it can alert the relevant authorities if something is wrong. The device will also sense if there's a break in routine, such as not getting up at the normal time or not following usual daily routines. Creator Kelvin Summoogum - who set up miiCARE, the firm behind the gadget, in March - got the idea when his grandmother broke her hip at home. He said she spent twelve hours in agony on the floor before anyone knew until a neighbour found her and brought her to the hospital.


Molecular Sets (MOSES): A Benchmarking Platform for Molecular Generation Models

Deep generative models such as generative adversarial networks, variational autoencoders, and autoregressive models are rapidly growing in popularity for the discovery of new molecules and materials. In this work, we introduce MOlecular SEtS (MOSES), a benchmarking platform to support research on machine learning for drug discovery. MOSES implements several popular molecular generation models and includes a set of metrics that evaluate the diversity and quality of generated molecules. MOSES is meant to standardize the research on the molecular generation and facilitate the sharing and comparison of new models. Additionally, we provide a large-scale comparison of existing state of the art models and elaborate on current challenges for generative models that might prove fertile ground for new research. Learning Finite State Representations of Recurrent Policy Networks

Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are an effective representation of control policies for a wide range of reinforcement and imitation learning problems. RNN policies, however, are particularly difficult to explain, understand, and analyze due to their use of continuous-valued memory vectors and observation features. In this paper, we introduce a new technique, Quantized Bottleneck Insertion, to learn finite representations of these vectors and features. The result is a quantized representation of the RNN that can be analyzed to improve our understanding of memory use and general behavior. We present results of this approach on synthetic environments and six Atari games. The resulting finite representations are surprisingly small in some cases, using as few as 3 discrete memory states and 10 observations for a perfect Pong policy. We also show that these finite policy representations lead to improved interpretability.


Correspondence Analysis of Government Expenditure Patterns

We analyze expenditure patterns of discretionary funds by Brazilian congress members. This analysis is based on a large dataset containing over $7$ million expenses made publicly available by the Brazilian government. This dataset has, up to now, remained widely untouched by machine learning methods. Our main contributions are two-fold: (i) we provide a novel dataset benchmark for machine learning-based efforts for government transparency to the broader research community, and (ii) introduce a neural network-based approach for analyzing and visualizing outlying expense patterns. Our hope is that the approach presented here can inspire new machine learning methodologies for government transparency applicable to other developing nations.


Adversarial Examples as an Input-Fault Tolerance Problem

We analyze the adversarial examples problem in terms of a model's fault tolerance with respect to its input. Whereas previous work focuses on arbitrarily strict threat models, i.e., $\epsilon$-perturbations, we consider arbitrary valid inputs and propose an information-based characteristic for evaluating tolerance to diverse input faults.


U.S. consumer watchdog to investigate video game loot boxes

Federal regulators have vowed to investigate a growing trend in video games that analysts say could soon become a $50 billion industry but that has drawn fire from critics who compare the practice to gambling. Senior officials at the Federal Trade Commission, America's top consumer watchdog, said Tuesday that they will look more closely at loot boxes -- the bundles of digital goods offered to players, often for a fee, that contain random assortments of in-game clothing, abilities or other rewards. Asked by Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) to probe the issue at an agency oversight hearing, FTC Chairman Joseph Simons said he would commit to launching a probe. The four other commissioners who testified also indicated their support. Hassan said she was concerned that loot boxes have become endemic in the gaming industry and that by enticing players to spend ever increasing amounts of money rolling for random loot the practice showed a "close link to gambling."


The Widely-Spoken Languages We Still Can't Translate Online

In the internet age, when we face a language barrier, there are a host of internet resources to solve it: things like translation apps, dictionary websites, versions of Wikipedia in other languages, and the simple "click to translate" option. But there are about 7000 languages spoken in the world today. The top 10 or so are spoken by hundred of millions of speakers; the bottom third have 1000 speakers or fewer. Gretchen McCulloch is WIRED's resident linguist. Her book Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language is due out in July 2019 from Penguin.


Battlefield V review – join the war effort on a thrillingly grand scale

With the advent of battle royale games like PUBG and Fortnite, there's plenty of evidence that modern tastes in first-person shooters are changing and fragmenting, but Dice's long-running Battlefield series has always catered for shooter enthusiasts who like to feel that they are participating in a realistic facsimile of a war. The good news is that Battlefield V takes that experience to new heights. It's a technical tour de force, taking in second world war settings that vary from North African deserts and French villages to a Rotterdam reduced to rubble, with totally convincing looks, sound design and weapon-feel. Important elements of the game are conspicuous by their absence at launch. Tides of War – the game's live service, which aims to make you feel part of a long-running, ever-evolving offensive – won't arrive until early December, and it'll be March before battle royale mode Firestorm is added. In this age of constant patching and regular expansions, it's valid to question whether some games will ever truly be completed, but at launch, Battlefield V feels only 70-80% finished.
