The robot will go through an initial assessment phase to check on its overall health and the health of its instruments before it can move on to the deployment phase. Then, once its finally time to deploy its suite of instruments, that process alone is expected to take two to three months. InSight will place its seismometer, and only once the team is happy with its location and initial operations will it return to the deck to get its wind and thermal shields, which will sit atop the seismometer for protection. The lander will then pick up the heat probe to bring to the surface, before beginning its historic dig. Eventually, once it's all settled in, Barrett says we'll be'sitting back listening for Mars quakes.'

In the 20th century, complex numbers became fundamental for the study of quantum mechanics. By now, the role of complex numbers is very important in many different branches of physics. The quaternions show up in physics but are not a major player. The octonions, the sedenions, and the larger number systems rarely arise in the physics literature.

When it comes to using computers to steal money, few can come close to matching the success of Russian hacker Evgeniy Bogachev. The $3 million bounty the FBI has offered for Bogachev's capture is larger than any that has ever been offered for a cybercriminal--but that sum represents only a tiny fraction of the money he has stolen through his botnet GameOver ZeuS.1 At its height in 2012 and 2013, GameOver ZeuS, or GOZ, comprised between 500,000 and 1 million compromised computers all over the world that Bogachev could control remotely. For years, Bogachev used these machines to spread malware that allowed him to steal banking credentials and perpetrate online extortion.2 No one knows exactly how much money Bogachev stole from his thousands of victims using GOZ, but the FBI conservatively estimates that it was well over $100 million.2 Meanwhile, Bogachev has spent lavishly on a fleet of luxury cars, two French villas, and a large yacht.1 Bogachev lives in the resort town of Anapa on the Black Sea, where Russian officials have declined for years to arrest him or extradite him to the United States.


'Shocking' Huawei arrest threatens to upend Trump-Xi trade truce

HONG KONG/BEIJING – On the same day Donald Trump and Xi Jinping struck a trade war truce in Argentina, some 7,000 miles away Canadian authorities made an arrest that now threatens to make the U.S.-China conflict much worse. The U.S. is seeking the extradition of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co., after convincing Canada to arrest her on Dec. 1 in connection with violating sanctions against Iran. China reacted with outrage on Wednesday, demanding that both countries move to free Meng immediately. It's hard to overstate the significance of her arrest in Beijing: Meng is the daughter of the founder of Huawei, a national champion at the forefront of Xi's efforts for China to be self-sufficient in strategic technologies. While the U.S. routinely asks allies to extradite drug lords, arms dealers and other criminals, arresting a major Chinese executive like this is rare -- if not unprecedented.


Congress Races to Pass a Self-Driving Car Law By Year's End

On Wednesday, Waymo officially launched its self-driving taxi service in the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona. Sure, the cars still have humans behind the wheel and they're only open to a subset of the few hundred people already enrolled in the company's exclusive beta tester program, but it's a reminder that driverless cars are coming (if more slowly than many had hoped and hyped). So it's high time that these new robo-things get firmer rules, regulators, consumer advocates, and even the self-driving industry itself has reasoned. To that end, this week, senators began to circulate new language for the AV Start Act, a bill that has lingered in congressional limbo for almost a year. In this new draft language, the bill would create a loose framework for the testing and deployment of automated vehicles, as a bill passed by the House of Representatives did last fall.


Huawei phone equipment in UK to be dismantled amid fears they could be used by China to spy on people

BT is removing Huawei technology from the phone networks amid fears that the Chinese government could be using its infrastructure to spy on citizens. The company says it will no longer use Huawei's equipment in its existing 3G and 4G networks, and that it would not use it to build the 5G ones that it is building at the moment. It is just the latest operator to announce that it would not use the Chinese companies equipment amid fears that phone messages they are relaying could be intercepted. New Zealand and Australia have stopped telecom operators using Huawei's equipment in new 5G networks because they are concerned about possible Chinese government involvement in their communications infrastructure. Huawei, the world's biggest network equipment maker ahead of Ericsson and Nokia, has said Beijing has no influence over its operations.


Waymo launches first US commercial self-driving taxi service

Almost ten years after Google secretly started work on technology that would allow a vehicle to operate without a human driver, the company has launched the nation's first commercial self-driving robo-taxi. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google, introduced a small fleet of ride-hailing vehicles in Phoenix, Arizona, asking people to pay, just as they would to travel by Uber or Lyft. For now, the project will also feature a human driver behind the wheel, just in case the robotic vehicle malfunctions. "Over time, we hope to make Waymo One available to even more members of the public Self-driving technology is new to many, so we're proceeding carefully," Waymo's CEO John Krafcik, wrote in a blog post about Wednesday's run-out. He added: "Almost 10 years ago, we were founded as the Google self-driving car project to explore one simple question: how can we best use fully self-driving technology to make roads safer? We've been focused on building the world's most experienced driver ever since."
