Even as artificial intelligence (AI) is forecast to exceed human capabilities across a range of industries it is also predicted to augment human labor. In finance, AI is already helping financial advisors augment financial planning while enhancing investment strategy. And in medicine, AI diagnostics systems have proven to be far more accurate than doctors in diagnosing heart disease and cancerous growths. In fact, McKinsey lists some 400 use cases representing $6 trillion in value across 19 industries in which AI will augment human work. What will the impact of AI be on the nature of government?
Sonos has new speaker on the way, official filing suggests
Sonos is working on a brand new speaker that could arrive within weeks, according to new filings. Documents made public by the Federal Communications Commission show a brand new speaker that bring a whole host of features to its existing line-up. But those features remain mostly under wraps: the filing is redacted and so many of the most important are hidden. Clues inside the filings appear to indicate what the speaker could be intended to do, however. The filings, first reported by Variety, identify the new speaker as "S18" and describe it as a voice-controlled speaker that can connect using WiFi or Bluetooth and can be controlled with a host of microphones that listen to their owner. Beyond that, features or even the speakers design remain largely mysterious.
Chang'e-4 landing: China's rover drives onto the far side of the moon
China's space agency has shared images of its lunar rover driving onto the far side of the moon. The photo shows the tracks made by the little robot as it left the spacecraft that became the first to ever land on the mysterious, distant part that remains entirely hidden from us on Earth. Just as with the pioneering mission of the spacecraft that carried it to the lunar surface, the rover becomes the first piece of kit ever to drive across the far side of the moon. The Jade Rabbit 2 rover drove off a ramp and onto the moon at 10:22 p.m. Thursday, about 12 hours after the Chang'e 4 spacecraft touched down. Lunar project chief designer Wu Weiren called the separation of the rover "a small step for the rover, but one giant leap for the Chinese nation."

"In the reality that has emerged in the last three to five years that model no longer exists because of cellphones, smartphones, virtual devices, and smart TVs. They are all embedded computers that connect and share data. There is increasingly no definable'castle' to effectively put a moat around."
'T.N. likely to see use of big data ahead of Lok Sabha polls'
With a number of political parties across the world using big data to reach out to voters during elections, Tamil Nadu too is likely to see the use of big data combined with artificial intelligence ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. With the voters' list, census data, data from all the past elections and social media chatter, parties could crack the polls, addressing issues that are key to voters, according to K. Swaminathan, founder and CEO, Aspire Ventures. Building on the platform he provided to late Jayalalithaa during the 2014 and 2016 elections, Mr. Swaminathan has developed the'Analytical Software for Psephological Influencers Research and Engagement' or Aspire 2.0 as he calls it, which uses AI and machine learning to provide real-time inputs to enable leaders to address issues or plan for the polls. Mr. Swaminathan, who was former secretary of the AIADMK IT wing, insists that the platform is "party independent" and can be used by any political party. The software enables a party to look at voting patterns from the previous elections and at data to identify gaps and ensure that they are plugged.
China releases 308lb rover named Jade Rabbit 2 to trundle across the far side of the moon
A Chinese rover is making its tracks on the soft surface of the'dark' side of the moon after touching down on our nearest celestial neighbour. The Yutu-2 - or Jade Rabbit 2 - rover drove off its lander's ramp and onto the exterior of the moon's far side at 10:22pm Beijing time (2:22 pm GMT) on Thursday, about 12 hours after the Chinese spacecraft carrying it came to rest. A photo was later posted online by China's space agency revealing the rover several yards away from the spacecraft. The tracks it makes on the surface of the moon will be forever immotalised and will never be lost as there is no wind on the moon due to its lack of an atmosphere. By 5pm Beijing time (9am GMT) the three fifteen-foot long antennaes on Chang'e-4 had also been fully unfurled to enable the low-frequency radio spectrometre to begin work. The rover which is currently meandering around the moon on six independently controlled wheels, has also established a robust connection with its relay satellite, Queqiao. Yutu-2 has already completed environmental perception, route planning, walking to where it is pictured currently and starting its scientific operations. Chinese state media also reports that the cameras on the machine have been turned on and are working normally. The other equipment will be turned on one by one, according to the Chinese space agency CNSA. Jade Rabbit 2 weighs 308lbs (139kg) and has six individually powered wheels so it can continue to operate even if one wheel fails.
We Need to Not Freak Out About the Robot Revolution
You, like me, may sometimes (or all the time!) feel that the world is spiraling out of control--trade wars and political strife. And, oh right, climate change, arguably the greatest threat our species has ever faced. Or maybe artificial intelligence and robots will put us all out of work before the world actually ends. "A dirty little secret about autonomous vehicles," says Edelman, "is there won't be enough people to service them because these are trade skill programs. We don't pay these people enough."
Finland's grand AI experiment
Jaana Partanen is not your typical AI programming geek. Until a year ago, the 59-year-old dentist from the Finnish town of Mikkeli had no idea what to make of terms like "machine learning" or "neural networks." Now, Partanen spends her evenings learning the basics of coding and she is thinking about how to apply artificial intelligence to her job, either to help write up medical summaries or perform orthodontics. "I can see it [artificial intelligence] is already here, and it serves us -- very much actually," she said, adding that following the latest developments in the field has become a hobby. She's one of tens of thousands of non-technology experts who are taking part in a grand experiment aimed at repurposing the country's economy toward high-end applications of artificial intelligence. The idea has a simple, Nordic ring to it: Start by teaching 1 percent of the country's population, or about 55,000 people, the basic concepts at the root of artificial technology, and gradually build on the number over the next few years.
Machine learning can offer new tools, fresh insights for the humanities

A paper published last summer in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, offers new insight into how the members of the first National Constituent Assembly hammered out the details of this new type of governance. Specifically, rhetorical innovations by key influential figures (like Robespierre) played a critical role in persuading others to accept what were, at the time, audacious principles of governance, according to co-author Simon DeDeo, a former physicist who now applies mathematical techniques to the study of historical and current cultural phenomena. And the cutting-edge machine learning methods he developed to reach that conclusion are now being employed by other scholars of history and literature. As more and more archives are digitized, scholars are applying various analytical tools to those rich datasets, such as Google N-gram, Bookworm, and WordNet.
