Remember when Elon Musk, speaking at SXSW in March 2018, scared the dickens out of us by warning against artificial intelligence (AI)? "The danger of AI," Musk stated, "is much greater than the danger of nuclear warheads ... more dangerous than nukes." Now comes yet another worrisome prediction, this time from Chinese venture capitalist and the world's foremost authority on AI, Kai-Fu Lee. In an interview to be aired this Sunday on 60 Minutes, Lee says that in as soon as 15 years, 40 percent of the world's jobs could be done by machines. "AI will increasingly replace repetitive jobs, not just for blue-collar work, but a lot of white-collar work," Lee tells CBS reporter Scott Pelley.
Cybersecurity Firm Warns AI May 'Go to Dark Side' in 2019
The company published a list of threats to be aware of in 2019, featuring a warning that AI could switch to "the Dark Side." It did not specify what it called artificial intelligence. "Cyber-criminals will start using AI for attacks, making the battlefield environment more tough," the statement read. The company said the use of AI in combination with a variety of techniques would make cyberattacks stealthier and increase their pace. Prevalence of smart gadgets with low security, it said further, could strip away user privacy with semi-legal monitoring of their activities, parasite on network vulnerabilities with cryptomining and pull users into fraud schemes.
US-China relations in the age of artificial intelligence
Under President Donald Trump, great power competition has become the organizing principle of American foreign policy. This has led to near-daily invocations of the Cold War to describe the intensifying rivalry between the United States and China, and to frequent analogies to an "arms race" to describe bilateral competition in advanced technologies, including quantum computing and artificial intelligence (AI). Public statements and national plans from both governments have reinforced this zero-sum dynamic. Such framing has done more to conceal than clarify and, if taken to its logical end-point, will do more harm than good for the United States. AI will create both immense stress on the U.S.-China relationship as well as opportunities for potential collaboration.
Russia: Expect a National AI Roadmap by Midyear
Russia is adding details, deadlines, and dedicated funding to its draft national roadmap for the development of artificial intelligence technologies, and expects to release the final version in mid-year. The roadmap "provides for the creation of a list of projects that will help identify and remove barriers to the development of end-to-end technologies, as well as predict the market demand for artificial intelligence in the country," as state media put it in October 2018. Moreover, the new document will form a cornerstone of the larger Digital Technologies national program. Already, it appears that Moscow is increasing the amount of money it intends to devote to AI R&D. In late 2017, the government was planning to spend about $419 million (28 billion rubles) by 2020. But last October brought a new version of the 2019-21 plan for Digital Technologies which appears to call for spending nearly twice that much: $287 million for leading research centers and start-ups, $145 million to develop products, services and platforms, and $287 million for technology "at the extreme degree of readiness."

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI)1 could impact nearly all aspects of society: the labor market, transportation, healthcare, education, and national security. AI's effects may be profoundly positive, but the technology entails risks and disruptions that warrant attention. While technologists and policymakers have begun to discuss AI and applications of machine learning more frequently, public opinion has not shaped much of these conversations. In the U.S., public sentiments have shaped many policy debates, including those about immigration, free trade, international conflicts, and climate change mitigation. As in these other policy domains, we expect the public to become more influential over time.

If we don't act, AI's impact on our lives, our cognitive processes, our jobs and our interpersonal and societal relations will be decided elsewhere. This is the main message of a JRC new report "Artificial Intelligence: A European perspective". It aims to take stock of the development of AI in the world today and lay out some of the options and pitfalls for EU policymakers in the face of strong competition, and competing visions, from the US and China. The report looks at recent developments in AI resulting from increased processing power, improvements in algorithms, and the exponential growth in the volume and variety of digital data.
AI to facilitate better crowd management at Kumbh Mela 2019 - Express Computer
"This will be for the first time that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be used in Kumbh Mela. Over 1,000 CCTV cameras will be used to monitor various movements across the Mela area spread across 3,200 hectares," said UP Additional Chief Secretary Awanish Awasthi. Artificial Intelligence will be used by the Integrated Command and Control Centre of the police wherein the security personnel can see the visuals of crowd movement and assess the crowd size. At the same time, they can also monitor anything which is suspicious, he said. Artificial Intelligence is a way of making a computer, a computer-controlled robot, or a software think intelligently, in the similar manner humans think.
It is not technology that will steal your job
The future of work is in hot debate all over the world. The World Economic Forum, the ILO, the International Confederation of Trade Unions, consulting firms, and universities like MIT have task forces asking what work will look like in the years ahead. There are two problems with much of these debates. The first is an over-fixation with technology. The second is the view that technology has a trajectory all its own as if there is some iron law of physics that will determine its shape and effects. I challenge both of these premises: technology will of course be important; it is one of the big "megatrends" that will influence work of the future.
European Commission โฌ20M AI project kicks-off - Mobile World Live
Executives from some of the largest companies in Europe and leading academics gathered for the first meeting of the European Commission's (EC) AI4EU project, which aims to drive adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in a wide range of industries. The group's launch meeting in Barcelona, Spain, brought together partners from 21 EU countries with 79 organisations involved. Delegates included telecoms operators, technology companies, other enterprises and academic institutions. It is being led by French aerospace and transport company Thales Group and features experts from Telenor and Orange among its representatives. AI4EU plans to conduct a number of pilots across different industries to define the benefits and issues related to AI technology.
FDA launches new tool aimed at safe deployment of AI in healthcare
The Food and Drug Administration is sticking its toe in the water of artificial intelligence, providing its first guidance on the emerging development of applications for the technology in healthcare. The FDA released model 1.0 of its software precertification pilot Monday to provide an initial tool to test these programs. The agency noted that with AI and machine learning technology advancing rapidly, the health IT community must move quickly to ensure their safety in practical applications. "Software is increasingly used in healthcare to treat and diagnose conditions and diseases, aid clinical decision making and manage patient care," the FDA wrote in its working model (PDF). "Under this program, software developers would be assessed (by FDA or by an FDA-accredited third party) for the rigor of their practices in software design, testing, clinical assessment, and real-world performance monitoring, along with other appropriate capabilities."
