CES 2019: What we learned from the world's biggest tech show

Every year the technology industry gathers in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), an event that often sets the agenda for the coming 12 months. This is what CES 2019 taught us. The first 5G networks are expected to begin rolling out this year, and so the next-generation connectivity technology was being mentioned everywhere at CES. Intel, Qualcomm and Samsung all spoke about harnessing the technology to not just offer faster mobile internet speeds, but also to connect more devices and appliances to each other and be able to handle more data in the process. Experts at the show also commented on the higher capacity of 5G networks being able to support the software needed to power networks of driverless cars and robots. The halls of this year's CES hinted at a world where homes, cars and even entire cities are connected to one another, with people able to use these connections to complete tasks every day.

Another potential use for AI on campus is streamlining the admissions process by making accurate forecasts and predictions. For example, colleges and universities need to be able to accurately estimate how many accepted students will enroll in each upcoming term. If institutions are not able to make accurate predictions, both over- and under-enrollment can cause serious problems. Over-enrollment requires the institution to accommodate more students than it has resources for, resulting in a reduction in quality for the students who choose to attend. Under-enrollment threatens the long-term stability of the university through the loss of potential gains.

Americans consider many AI governance challenges to be important; prioritize data privacy and preventing AI-enhanced cyber attacks, surveillance, and digital manipulation We sought to understand how Americans prioritize policy issues associated with AI. Respondents were asked to consider five AI governance challenges, randomly selected from a test of 13 (see Appendix B for the text); the order these five were to each respondent was also randomized. After considering each governance challenge, respondents were asked how likely they think the challenge will affect large numbers of people 1) in the U.S. and 2) around the world within 10 years. We use scatterplots to visualize our survey results. In Figure 3.1, the x-axis is the perceived likelihood of the problem happening to large numbers of people in the U.S. In Figure 3.2, the x-axis is the perceived likelihood of the problem happening to large numbers of people around the world.

If you wanted to simplify, CES 2019 could be neatly divided into self-driving cars, giant TVs and health tech. A lot of what we've seen of the latter either tracks your movement or is hardware ingrained into workouts. Spryng is a little different, aimed at speeding up your recovery, reducing muscle soreness by stimulating blood circulation. While looking like an unassuming pair of chunky shinguards, these tech-laced wraps expand and contract around your calves, improving blood flow and feeling very nice in the process. The startup showcased the portable muscle recovery tool at CES, and it's backed up by several scientific papers that elaborate on the medical applications of active compression.


Using Intelligent Technology in Sourcing to Get Ahead of Rising U.S. Tariffs

Since the first list went into effect on July 6, 2018, tariffs on goods imported to the U.S. from China have been a significant source of pain, particularly for those in the high-tech industry. As reported by SourceToday, the 818 categories of products listed are valued at $34 billion, with electronic components making up 58 of the categories, accounting for 15 percent of the value of targeted goods. A second list may soon be on the way and promises to hit electronic components even harder, with 27 percent of the value of goods, totaling $4.3 billion of the $16 billion, in this second wave of tariffs. Bracing for the impact of existing and future tariffs, some distributors are trying to clear the way by rolling tariffs into their prices, while others are depending on manufacturers to account for the cost after the buy. These policies continue to be in flux as the industry comes to terms with the issue, making it almost impossible to determine total expenditures.


How artificial intelligence will affect the future of energy and climate

In a 2017 article for Foreign Affairs, Kassia Yanosek and I advanced the hypothesis that the biggest impacts of the information technology (IT) revolution may be felt far outside IT--in the traditional industries of oil, gas, and electricity.1 That's because IT was transforming how those industries function. That logic of transformation may be especially profound when looking at a subset of the IT revolution: artificial intelligence (AI). Other essays in this series explain what's happening with AI and why it is such an important technical revolution.2 In this essay, I'll look at how AI might be affecting the supply and demand for energy and the implications of AI for how modern society uses energy: climate change. In a nutshell, the message is that AI helps make markets more efficient and easier for analysts and market participants to understand highly complex phenomena--from the behavior of electrical power grids to climate change.


Britain needs to step up to win the global AI healthcare race

At this time of year, the news is invariably gearing up for a season full of stories about a crisis in hospital care. But away from the headlines, Britain is on the brink of a real global health success story – one we must capitalise on in 2019. It's no stretch to say that the UK is already leading the way on the use of medical technology, from the Versius robotic surgery system to the Libre diabetes patch worn by the Prime Minister herself. Health secretary Matt Hancock recently set out his belief that "with the right tools in the NHS, we can improve people's lives". But healthcare technology is about more than robots and apps, valuable as they are.


DARPA wants to build conscious robots using insect brains

The Pentagon's emerging technologies unit put out a call last week for proposals that use insect brains to control robots -- because they could be used to create efficient new models for artificial intelligence, but also because they could be used to explore the meaning of consciousness. "Nature has forced on these small insects drastic miniaturization and energy efficiency, some having only a few hundred neurons in a compact form-factor, while maintaining basic functionality," reads a document in the proposal. "Furthermore, these organisms are possibly able to display increased subjectivity of experience." It goes on to say that there's evidence suggesting that "even small insects have subjective experiences, the first step towards a concept of'consciousness.'" The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is famed for funding projects that led to the early internet.

Artificial Intelligence is starting to deliver on its promise, but widespread adoption is essential to help drive the UK economy, says IBM's Bill Kelleher There is little doubt about the transformative benefit of AI. CBI research from last year shows that business leaders see the adoption of AI and other technologies as vital for increasing levels of productivity across the economy. This is echoed by a recent IBM Institute for Business Value study of 5,000 C-Suite executives, which revealed that 82 per cent of enterprises are now either implementing or considering an AI solution. This year Prime Minister Theresa May also called out her commitment to AI. Her vision is for the UK to become the best place in the world for businesses developing and deploying AI to start, grow and thrive.


Europe launches new AI initiative to begin catch-up mission

This month has seen the launch of the European Commission's AI4EU project, an initiative to create an AI-on-demand platform for Europe and challenge for leadership in this blossoming segment. Having been agreed during December, the AI4EU project already has 79 partners in 21 countries across the bloc, firstly focusing on developing eight industry-driven AI pilots which will demonstrate the value of the AI-on-demand platform as a technological innovation tool. Led by Thales, the group will receive €20 million in funding to begin with. "The European Commission has published its coordinated plan on artificial intelligence, as well as new guidelines on how to deal with the ethical issues relating to AI," said Roberto Viola, the Director General of DG Connect at the European Commission, in a recent blog post. "Both put humans firmly at the centre of this key technology that has the potential to revolutionise all our lives."
