Have you ever uploaded a photo of you and your friends to Facebook, only to see that Facebook has self-identified your friends in the photo and asked permission to tag them? You likely use other forms of AI throughout your day without even realizing it: through Siri's speech recognition, Google's search engine, and even through spam filters that clean up your email inbox. These are all forms of what we call narrow AI - technology that is set to perform a specific task - as opposed to general AI - which is meant to solve broader and more complex problems. AI is often utilized in cases of classification and forecasting. Classification involves organizing data and assigning labels through pattern matching, while forecasting makes a prediction for the future based on known data.


Navy to test 'ghost fleet' attack drone boats in war scenarios

Williams/Released) The U.S. Navy will launch a swarm of interconnected small attack drone boats on mock-combat missions to refine command and control technology and prepare its "Ghost Fleet" of autonomous, yet networked surface craft for war. Developed by the Office of Naval Research and Naval Sea Systems Command, "Ghost Fleet" represents a Navy strategy to surveil, counter, overwhelm and attack enemies in a coordinated fashion - all while keeping sailors on host ships at safer distances. The small boats, many of them called Unmanned Surface Vessels, are designed to conduct ISR missions, find and destroy mines and launch a range of attacks including electronic warfare and even mounted guns. The concept is to use advanced computer algorithms bringing new levels of autonomy to surface warfare, enabling ships to coordinate information exchange, operate in tandem without colliding and launch combined assaults. "Ghost Fleet is really helping us in the Command and Control and coms arena. The demonstration will allow us to learn lessons about integrated payloads with USVs," Capt.


Bing blocked in China as yet another foreign website falls victim to 'great firewall'

Bing has been blocked in China, Microsoft has said. The outage makes the search engine the latest of a whole host of foreign technologies to be taken down by China's "great firewall", which controls what people can see from within the country. Bing was the only major foreign search engine available in the country. "We've confirmed that Bing is currently inaccessible in China and are engaged to determine next steps," the company said in a statement. It is the U.S. technology giant's second setback in China since November 2017 when its Skype internet phone call and messaging service was pulled from Apple and Android app stores.

In their respective plans, each of these countries focuses on specific areas and strategies. While the list is certainly not exhaustive, it does give us a picture of where things might be going in the near future regarding AI development and use. Although the U.S might be the leader of AI development at the moment, the lack of a national AI strategy could lead to them falling behind in the global race.

We Need to Get Smart About How Governments Use AI

FAA details impact of drone sightings on Newark airport

WASHINGTON - The Federal Aviation Administration said on Wednesday that 43 flights into New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport were required to hold after drone sightings at a nearby airport on Tuesday, while nine flights were diverted. The incident comes as major U.S. airports are assessing the threat of drones and have been holding meetings to address the issue. The issue of drones impacting commercial air traffic came to the fore after London's second-busiest airport, Gatwick Airport, was severely disrupted in December when drones were sighted on three consecutive days. An FAA spokesman said that Tuesday's event lasted for 21 minutes. The flights into Newark, the 11th-busiest U.S. airport, were suspended after a drone was seen flying at 3,500 feet over nearby Teterboro Airport, a small regional airport about 17 miles (27.3 km) away that mostly handles corporate jets and private planes.

Dmitry Malioutov can't say much about what he built. As a research scientist at IBM, Malioutov spends part of his time building machine learning systems that solve difficult problems faced by IBM's corporate clients. One such program was meant for a large insurance corporation. It was a challenging assignment, requiring a sophisticated algorithm. When it came time to describe the results to his client, though, there was a wrinkle. "We couldn't explain the model to them because they didn't have the training in machine learning." In fact, it may not have helped even if they were machine learning experts.
