We've found crowdsourcing (i.e., the gathering of ideas, thoughts, and concepts from a widespread variety of interested individuals) to be a very effective tool in enabling us to diversify our thoughts and challenge our assumptions. In many ways we are already experiencing the future now. But predictions are hard to validate. A way around that is turning to slightly older predictions to illuminate the magnitude of the issues and the reality of their propositions.1

A hitchhiking robot was beheaded in Philadelphia. A security robot was punched to the ground in Silicon Valley. Another security bot, in San Francisco, was covered in a tarp and smeared with barbecue sauce. Why do people lash out at robots, particularly those built to resemble humans? It is a global phenomenon. In a mall in Osaka, Japan, three boys beat a humanoid robot with all their strength. In Moscow, a man attacked a teaching robot named Alantim with a baseball bat, kicking it to the ground, while the robot pleaded for help.


When Iowa's snow piles up, TensorFlow can keep roads safe

Iowa may be heaven, but it's a snowy one. With an average of around 33 inches of snow every year, keeping roads open and safe is an important challenge. Car accidents tend to spike during the winter months each year in Iowa, as do costly delays. And dangerous commutes can mean hazards for people and commerce alike: the state is one of the country's largest producers of agricultural output, and much of that is moved on roads. To improve road safety and efficiency, the Iowa Department of Transportation has teamed up with researchers at Iowa State University to use machine learning, including our TensorFlow framework, to provide insights into traffic behavior.

You have to have a supreme sense of irony, or be in major denial, to call Monday, Jan. 28, Data Privacy Day. Given the current state of big data collection and "sharing" (selling) by online giants and telcos, combined with the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to draw intrusive inferences about us from all that data, it would be much more accurate to call it Privacy is Dead Day. Because the modern threats to privacy are not just that your credit card or bank account could get compromised. It is that your life – everything about your life – can be collected and analyzed by companies, governments, groups and even individuals in a way that, collectively, starts to sound very much like Big Brother.

How the NHS is using deep learning to combat coronary heart disease

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the leading causes of death in the UK; it's responsible for more than 66,000 deaths each year, and it's estimated that 2.3 million people in the UK are currently living with the disease. Imaging is an important part of diagnosing people and managing treatment with a range of cardiovascular diseases, and the NHS uses Echo, MRI and CT scans to do this. A CT scan is used to do a coronary CT angiography, which involves taking images of the heart blood vessels and using the CT scan with some dye contrast into the blood vessels. This enables doctors to see if blood vessels are narrowing, causing patients to have chest pain or angina. The test has been around for the last 10 or 15 years but has increased in usage as radiation doses have decreased dramatically.

In support of the developing Artificial Intelligence industry in India, the event commenced with an opening keynote delivered by Shri Ajay Prakash Sawhney, Secretary for the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, followed by a special address by Shri Kaustubh Dhavse, Joint Secretary & Officer on Special Duty to the Hon. Chief Minister, Govt. of Maharashtra, who touched upon the topic of making governments ready for the advent of AI. Speaking at the event, Kaustubh said, "The key here is that when you are going to see the magic of AI being delivered, it is important to also monitor how effectively you can use it in your applications."


Autonomous drones are dropping rat poison bombs on this island

The Galapagos Island of Seymour Norte, off the coast of Ecuador, has a vicious invasive rat problem. Despite efforts to curb the spread of the rats in 2007, conservationists found the tiny island was infested yet again a decade later by two common rat species. This time, they employed a high-tech solution to fight the vermin: autonomous drones that fly along predetermined paths and drop bombs of rodent poison, Wired reports. Invasive rodents have decimated native species like iguanas and a number of birds by eating their eggs, and offspring. The government of Ecuador partnered with Island Conservation, an American non-profit, to devise a solution: six-rotor drones specially designed to drop an immense 44 pounds of rat poison pellets per trip.

At the recent event at Davos, the Singapore government showed faith in the companies that work with AI and published a new AI governance framework that it believes will help guide them drive ethical and responsible AI deployments. While it is currently a "live document" open for public consultation, pilot adoption, and feedback, it is intended to be agile in evolving with the fast-paced changes in a Digital Economy and expected to continue to develop alongside adoptees use. "The key point to note is that this is a framework. It is not a rule or a regulation. This is basically an outcome from industry consultation that we have had," explained Singapore Minister for Communications and Information S Iswaran.
