And there's no time this would be more helpful than during surgery. Now, ImFusion, a Munich-based startup and NVIDIA Inception program member, is taking medical imaging into the next dimension. It's using AI to turn 2D ultrasound data into 3D images.

Software being developed by the collective, which includes AI firms Intelligent Voice and Strenuus, will use algorithms and voice recognition to understand emotion and linguistics, working out whether insurance claims could be fraudulent. "Artificial intelligence and data are transforming industries across the world," said Business Secretary Greg Clark. "We are combining our unique heritage in AI with our world-beating professional services to put the UK at the forefront of these cutting-edge technologies and their application." The project developed by the three research and development organisations is just one of 40 being funded by the government from a £13 million pot.

DARPA Thinks AI Could Help Troops Telepathically Control Machines
The Pentagon's research office is exploring how artificial intelligence can improve technologies that link troops' brains and bodies to military systems. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency recently began recruiting teams to research how AI tools could augment and enhance "next-generation neurotechnology." Through the program, officials ultimately aim to build AI into neural interfaces, a technology that lets people control, feel and interact with remote machines as though they were a part of their own body. Impossible as they may sound, neural interfaces have already been used to allow people to control prosthetic limbs, translate thoughts into text, and telepathically fly drones. Through the Intelligent Neural Interfaces program, DARPA will explore how AI can make these systems more durable, efficient and effective.
Huawei founder says 'no way the US can crush us'
The founder of Huawei has said that the firm can withstand attempts by foreign governments to shut out the Chinese technology giant. Ren Zhengfei said US was attempting to "crush" his company by encouraging allies not to use Huawei-made equipment. He warned that by turning their back on Huawei they risked falling behind in areas like 5G rollout, which Huawei has helped pioneer in recent years. "There's no way the US can crush us," he told the BBC. "The world cannot leave us because we are more advanced. Even if they persuade more countries not to use us temporarily, we can always scale things down a bit."

In this tutorial, you will learn how to train a Keras deep learning model to predict breast cancer in breast histology images. Back 2012-2013 I was working for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to develop a suite of image processing and machine learning algorithms to automatically analyze breast histology images for cancer risk factors, a task that took trained pathologists hours to complete. Back then deep learning was not as popular and "mainstream" as it is now. For example, the ImageNet image classification challenge had only launched in 2009 and it wasn't until 2012 that Alex Krizhevsky, Ilya Sutskever, and Geoffrey Hinton won the competition with the now infamous AlexNet architecture. To analyze the cellular structures in the breast histology images we were instead leveraging basic computer vision and image processing algorithms, but combining them in a novel way. These algorithms worked really well -- but also required quite a bit of work to put together.

UK government invests £13M in 40 AI and data analytics projects
The UK government will invest some £13 million in 40 projects involving artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics in an attempt to boost the UK accountancy, insurance and legal services industries. One of the projects will develop breakthrough artificial intelligence technology for the anti-fraud sector. Intelligent Voice, Strenuus and the University of East London will combine AI and voice recognition technology to detect and interpret emotion and linguistics to assess the credibility of insurance claims. Other examples include: an online "bot" which will use artificial intelligence to provide quick answers to legal questions online; an analysis tool which looks at images collected by drones to assess flood-damaged areas, using a 3D image recognition system to evaluate flood extent and depth alongside impacts on buildings and infrastructure to help with insurance claim assessments; and artificial intelligence software that will analyse accounting data and suggest ways for businesses to cut expenditure, suggesting new deals on gas, water and electricity bills. The projects are part of the Next Generation Services Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.
