Levi's Hires Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer
Levi's has hired its first artificial intelligence (AI) officer. Katia Walsh, who was most recently Vodafone's chief data and analytics officer, will begin her tenure at Levi's on April 29. According to a company statement, Walsh will focus on building "data, analytics and artificial intelligence enablers" that will strengthen the company's present and future business ventures. Levi's hasn't been more specific than that, but it's a safe bet Walsh will tap her expertise to build on the AI efforts specifically -- and the digital advances in general -- Levi's has made in recent years. Deepfakes and Cybersecurity: How Much of a Threat Are They?
The ability to digitally insert actors into films has been available since the mid-1990s, when it was first used to finish The Crow after the tragic on-set death of lead actor Brandon Lee. Techniques to do this in a very realistic and natural-looking way have been available for years now, so why is there such a panic brewing over deepfakes? Before deepfakes, this sort of thing required expensive CGI software and highly specialized knowledge that is limited to a relative handful of digital effects studios. Deepfakes employ artificial intelligence and allow anyone with a decent computer to make their own realistic fake videos starring just about anyone in the world, working only from a set of images or videos of their target. Deepfakes are a relatively new phenomenon, first starting to emerge on the internet in late 2017.
U.K. Government To Fund AI University Courses With ยฃ115m
The U.K. government is planning to fund thousands of postgraduate students that want to study a Masters or a PhD in artificial intelligence as it looks to keep pace with the U.S. and China. AI is poised to become the most significant technology for a generation but there are only so many people that know how to develop the technology, which could have a huge impact on industries such as healthcare, energy, and automotive. Business Secretary Greg Clark and Digital Secretary Jeremy Wright announced on Thursday that the government will commit up to ยฃ115 million towards training the next generation of AI talent. In a press release, the government said 1,000 students will receive funding to enable them to complete PhDs at 16 U.K. Research and Innovation AI Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs), located across the country. Better Language Models and Their Implications
Our model, called GPT-2 (a successor to GPT), was trained simply to predict the next word in 40GB of Internet text. Due to our concerns about malicious applications of the technology, we are not releasing the trained model. As an experiment in responsible disclosure, we are instead releasing a much smaller model for researchers to experiment with, as well as a technical paper. GPT-2 is a large transformer-based language model with 1.5 billion parameters, trained on a dataset[1] of 8 million web pages. GPT-2 is trained with a simple objective: predict the next word, given all of the previous words within some text. The diversity of the dataset causes this simple goal to contain naturally occurring demonstrations of many tasks across diverse domains. GPT-2 is a direct scale-up of GPT, with more than 10X the parameters and trained on more than 10X the amount of data. GPT-2 displays a broad set of capabilities, including the ability to generate conditional synthetic text samples of unprecedented quality, where we prime the model with an input and have it generate a lengthy continuation. In addition, GPT-2 outperforms other language models trained on specific domains (like Wikipedia, news, or books) without needing to use these domain-specific training datasets. On language tasks like question answering, reading comprehension, summarization, and translation, GPT-2 begins to learn these tasks from the raw text, using no task-specific training data.
Computers are getting better than humans at reading
The robots are coming, and they can read. Artificial intelligence programs built by Alibaba (BABA) and Microsoft (MSFT) have beaten humans on a Stanford University reading comprehension test. "This is the first time that a machine has outperformed humans on such a test," Alibaba said in a statement Monday. The test was devised by artificial intelligence experts at Stanford to measure computers' growing reading abilities. Alibaba's software was the first to beat the human score.
This AI is so good at writing that its creators won't let you use it
San Francisco (CNN Business)A new artificial intelligence system is so good at composing text that the researchers behind it said they won't release it for fear of how it could be misused. Created by nonprofit AI research company OpenAI (whose backers include Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Microsoft), the text-generating system can write page-long responses to prompts, mimicking everything from fantasy prose to fake celebrity news stories and homework assignments. It builds on an earlier text-generating system the company released last year. Researchers have used AI to generate text for decades with varying levels of success. In recent years, the technology has gotten particularly good.
AI-aided justice: How technology is changing Chinese courts
A Shanghai court has become China's first court to officially adopt an artificial intelligence-supported software to facilitate judicial hearings, with judges and prosecutors using the new technology to improve efficiency and accuracy in delivering justice. This also means using less paper and manpower. The software was first put to test in January during a case involving robbery and murder. No paperwork was filed during the trial and nearly all evidence were presented in the court through electronic display. Huang Boqing, a deputy chief judge of the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court, told CGTN that during previous trials, identifying and verifying evidence took a lot of time and attention.
'Outrageous abuse of privacy': New York orders inquiry into Facebook data use
New York's governor, Andrew Cuomo, has ordered two state agencies to investigate a media report that Facebook may be accessing far more personal information than previously known from smartphone users, including health and other sensitive data. The directive to New York's department of state and department of financial services (DFS) came after the Wall Street Journal said testing showed that Facebook collected personal information from other apps on users' smartphones within seconds of them entering it. The WSJ reported that several apps share sensitive user data including weight, blood pressure and ovulation status with Facebook. The report said the company can access data in some cases even when the user is not signed into Facebook or does not have a Facebook account. In a statement, Cuomo called the practice an "outrageous abuse of privacy".
