Top UK-Based AI Fellowships That Indian Students Can Apply For
In an attempt to attract and retain the best of the talent, the UK government has rolled out a number of scholarships for Indian and EU students. As part of the programme, 1,000 students from India and the European Union will get an opportunity to enhance their skills in artificial intelligence through their 16 dedicated centres for Research and Innovation AI Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) in universities across England, Scotland and Wales. The ยฃ110 million packages by the UK government will offer 200 AI Masters places at UK universities which is also funded by the likes of Infosys, Deepmind, QuantumBlack, Cisco and BAE Systems. Types of scholarship: Turing Senior AI Fellowships: For existing leaders in the field and applicants should already be demonstrating leadership equivalent to a full professorial position. Location: Fellows will be based in the UK and hosted by a UK organisation with significant ability to carry out research.
Alien life could be found around stars that are squeezed together, study suggests
Alien life could be found in solar systems where to stars have been pushed together, according to new research. The early life of planetary systems can often be difficult and dramatic: young planets orbit around suns that are found in clusters of stars that often collide with each other violently. Such dramatic moments have been thought to be difficult for life, since they are so harsh and violent. It has meant that research has largely focused on planets and potential life around stars that are similar to our own, since we have been biased to presume that any other solar system that has aliens inside of it is likely to look like ours. Virtually none of those "solar twins" โ stars that look like our own โ have actually been found to exist.

The mention of Artificial Intelligence (AI) brings up different associations for people. Some recall Hal 2001: A Space Odyssey and others may point to self-driving cars, robots, smart homes, Siri or IBM's Watson. Applications already exist or are being developed in education, science, travel, healthcare, retail, entertainment, technology and other industries. Large organizations may use a form of artificial intelligence to automate various processes that involve labor-intensive repetitive tasks, like invoicing or customer service. As much as AI is already present in our lives, it's going to be an even larger one in the future.
Explicit-risk-aware Path Planning with Reward Maximization

This paper develops a path planner that minimizes risk (e.g. motion execution) while maximizing accumulated reward (e.g., quality of sensor viewpoint) motivated by visual assistance or tracking scenarios in unstructured or confined environments. In these scenarios, the robot should maintain the best viewpoint as it moves to the goal. However, in unstructured or confined environments, some paths may increase the risk of collision; therefore there is a tradeoff between risk and reward. Conventional state-dependent risk or probabilistic uncertainty modeling do not consider path-level risk or is difficult to acquire. This risk-reward planner explicitly represents risk as a function of motion plans, i.e., paths. Without manual assignment of the negative impact to the planner caused by risk, this planner takes in a pre-established viewpoint quality map and plans target location and path leading to it simultaneously, in order to maximize overall reward along the entire path while minimizing risk. Exact and approximate algorithms are presented, whose solution is further demonstrated on a physical tethered aerial vehicle. Other than the visual assistance problem, the proposed framework also provides a new planning paradigm to address minimum-risk planning under dynamical risk and absence of substructure optimality and to balance the trade-off between reward and risk.

World's Top 33 Companies Working on Self Driving Cars
One of the most active areas of research and development at the moment is in the push towards self driving cars and autonomous transportation. Should self driving cars be realized it will free up time and reduce stress levels on the daily commute. If perfected it may also be safer than cars being driven by humans. Electric powered autonomous shuttles replacing gas guzzling cars could also have a significant, positive impact on the environment. It is no wonder, therefore that many of the leading players in the autonomous sector, as well as many major car manufacturers, are investing significant amounts of time and expense into developing smart self driving and autonomous solutions. The following list is organized alphabetically and will look at 33 of the leading companies who are currently pioneering self driving car technology. Since 2016 there has been much interest surrounding Project Titan. This is the name given to Apple's development program for self driving cars. However the drive for autonomous cars did not get off to a smooth start. Early setbacks, such as a rumoured hiring freeze following the departure of project head Steve Zadesky hit the program. There was also a rumours of uncertainty within Apple regarding the vision of the project. Since then Apple has tasked Bob Mansfield, a noted hardware executive, with leading their charge towards developing self driving cars. The subsequent appointment of Dan Dodge, the founder and former CEO of QNX indicates that Project Titan now has a firm strategy. This means that Apple is focusing the majority of its efforts on the development of autonomous or self driving cars. Apple documents released in April 2017 revealed that the company was working towards creating an "automated system". To help further their quest towards achieving self driving cars Apple also revealed that they had conducted a recruitment drive. This has seen the company hire some former Waymo and NASA's robotic engineering experts amongst others. The most notable of these recruits was Jaime Waydo, a senior engineer who had worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory as well as on various Waymo projects. This recruitment drive has served to kick start Project Titan. Following the new recruits arrival vehicular patent activity connected to Apple has noticeably increased. Since 2018 Apple has been fleshing out its autonomous cars fleet. In the summer of 2018 the company officially had 66 vehicles registered with the California DMV most of which were also operating on public roads around the state. This means that Apple has the third largest fleet of self driving cars in California, behind only Waymo and GM Cruise.

The United States must get serious about a comprehensive strategy on artificial intelligence or risk losing leadership in a technology that is different from any other that's been developed so far. Nations that lead in AI stand to gain tremendous advantages across industry, government and society at large. More than 20 countries and governing bodies have already released strategies to promote the development of AI in an effort to reap its benefits and, in some cases, take the lead in AI. But despite a promising recent executive order, the U.S., notably, has not created such a strategy. A transformative technology, AI's potential benefits include improving healthcare, streamlining national security and cyber defense, enabling more precise data analytics, and making agriculture more sustainable. A 2017 report by PWC estimated that AI technologies could increase global GDP by $15.7 trillion by 2030, representing a potential 20 percent increase, with $3.7 trillion of that increase occurring in North America, for a 14.5 percent increase in GDP.
