Battlefield AI gets $72 million Army investment

IMAGE: The US Army is investing $72 million in a five-year artificial intelligence fundamental research effort. Today, the Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory, the U.S. Army's corporate laboratory (ARL), announced that Carnegie Mellon University will lead a consortium of multiple universities to work in collaboration with the Army lab to accelerate research and development of advanced algorithms, autonomy and artificial intelligence to enhance national security and defense. By integrating transformational research from top academic institutions across the US with the operational expertise and mission-focused research from within CCDC, the Army will be able to drastically accelerate the impact of Battlefield AI. "Tackling difficult science and technology challenges is rarely done alone and there is no greater challenge or opportunity facing the Army than Artificial Intelligence," said Dr. Philip Perconti, director of the Army's corporate laboratory. "That's why ARL is partnering with Carnegie Mellon University, which will lead a consortium of universities to study AI. The Army is looking forward to making great advances in AI research to ensure readiness today and to enhance the Army's modernization priorities for the future."


Liquid water is HOPPING around the surface of the moon surface

Liquid water on the surface of the moon has been found to'hop' around various cold spots on the lunar surface due to a complex and intricate sequence of events. Temperatures rise during the moon's daytime and at lunar noon it is sufficiently warm enough to cause water to leave the soil - known as the regolith. It then either bounces to the nearest cold location or rises into the atmosphere before being reabsorbed. It was spotted by the Lyman Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP) on NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). Scientists say this discovery could allow for a constant supply of water for planned long-term manned missions to the moon.


Japan's Komeito political party seeks international regulations on robotic weapons

A project team of Komeito, the junior partner in the Liberal Democratic Party-led ruling coalition, has presented to Foreign Minister Taro Kono its proposals for an international agreement to regulate robotic weapons development. Deployment of lethal autonomous weapons systems, or LAWS, cannot be overlooked in terms of international humanitarian law and ethics, according to the proposals released Monday. Komeito called for agreeing on a document, such as a political declaration or a code of conduct, within the framework of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons. Kono said he will refer to the proposals. Ethical issues and military advantages of such weapons have been under discussion within the framework of the convention since 2014.


Russians protest plans to cut country's internet off from the rest of the world

Thousands of people in Moscow and other Russian cities took to the streets over the weekend to protest legislation they fear could lead to widespread internet censorship in the country. The protests, which were some of the biggest protests in the Russian capital in years, came in response to a bill in parliament that would route all internet traffic through servers in Russia, making virtual private networks (VPNs) ineffective. Critics say the bill would create an internet firewall similar to China's, calling it an online "iron curtain", but advocates claim it is necessary to protect the country from state-backed cyber attacks. Eleven years is a long time to be writing about'digital pharma', and I do indeed remember when it was all My First Twitter Account and iPhone Apps as far as the eye could see. Over those years some technologies have entered the digital health mainstream, while others have failed to live up to their promise, never emerging from what Gartner's Hype Cycle terms the Trough of Disillusionment. Stuck in those doldrums we might find, amongst others, Google Glass, Google's smart contact lens and Nokia's digital health ambitions, but one tech sector that is living up to the hype is artificial intelligence (AI). It has certainly featured on its fair share of'next big thing in health tech' lists over the years, but the last few months have seen a real sense of momentum build around the area. To stick with Gartner's Hype Cycle model for a moment, AI in pharma and healthcare is being rapidly driven up by what the consultants term the Slope of Enlightenment and towards the Plateau of Productivity. The headwinds for this were certainly there in 2018, when all the signs were that AI in pharma was on the rise.

Palmer Luckey's firm wins Pentagon drone AI contract

Google may have backed out of the US military's Project Maven, but that doesn't mean other tech companies are unwilling to participate. The Intercept has learned that Oculus Rift co-founder Palmer Luckey's defense company, Anduril, won a contract to support the drone AI initiative in 2018. The firm will also support the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, according to newly obtained documents. While there aren't specifics around what that contract would entail, Project Maven relies on machine learning to detect people in drone videos and provide more effective intelligence data. Anduril is most commonly known for its existing system, Lattice. It also uses machine learning, in this case to identify objects for the sake of border monitoring (such as a pitch for a virtual border wall) and battlefield awareness.
