Intention-aware Long Horizon Trajectory Prediction of Surrounding Vehicles using Dual LSTM Networks

As autonomous vehicles (AVs) need to interact with other road users, it is of importance to comprehensively understand the dynamic traffic environment, especially the future possible trajectories of surrounding vehicles. This paper presents an algorithm for long-horizon trajectory prediction of surrounding vehicles using a dual long short term memory (LSTM) network, which is capable of effectively improving prediction accuracy in strongly interactive driving environments. In contrast to traditional approaches which require trajectory matching and manual feature selection, this method can automatically learn high-level spatial-temporal features of driver behaviors from naturalistic driving data through sequence learning. By employing two blocks of LSTMs, the proposed method feeds the sequential trajectory to the first LSTM for driver intention recognition as an intermediate indicator, which is immediately followed by a second LSTM for future trajectory prediction. Test results from real-world highway driving data show that the proposed method can, in comparison to state-of-art methods, output more accurate and reasonable estimate of different future trajectories over 5s time horizon with root mean square error (RMSE) for longitudinal and lateral prediction less than 5.77m and 0.49m, respectively.
Does Generative Face Completion Help Face Recognition?

Face occlusions, covering either the majority or discriminative parts of the face, can break facial perception and produce a drastic loss of information. Biometric systems such as recent deep face recognition models are not immune to obstructions or other objects covering parts of the face. While most of the current face recognition methods are not optimized to handle occlusions, there have been a few attempts to improve robustness directly in the training stage. Unlike those, we propose to study the effect of generative face completion on the recognition. We offer a face completion encoder-decoder, based on a convolutional operator with a gating mechanism, trained with an ample set of face occlusions. To systematically evaluate the impact of realistic occlusions on recognition, we propose to play the occlusion game: we render 3D objects onto different face parts, providing precious knowledge of what the impact is of effectively removing those occlusions. Extensive experiments on the Labeled Faces in the Wild (LFW), and its more difficult variant LFW-BLUFR, testify that face completion is able to partially restore face perception in machine vision systems for improved recognition.

Adversarial attacks aim to confound machine learning systems, while remaining virtually imperceptible to humans. Attacks on image classification systems are typically gauged in terms of $p$-norm distortions in the pixel feature space. We perform a behavioral study, demonstrating that the pixel $p$-norm for any $0\le p \le \infty$, and several alternative measures including earth mover's distance, structural similarity index, and deep net embedding, do not fit human perception. Our result has the potential to improve the understanding of adversarial attack and defense strategies.

With the recent launch of the website AI.gov as "Artificial Intelligence for the American People," AI will clearly be an integral part of our future. While some may still wonder, "what can AI do for us?," many more may be asking, "what can AI do to us?" given some recent tragic events. The crashes of the Boeing 737 MAXs and Uber and Tesla's self-driving car fatalities point to AI's unintended consequences and highlight how technologists as well as users of AI have both fallen short at making proper guardrails in deploying AI technology. People often think of AI as the panacea that will enable technology to solve our most pressing problems. In that way, AI brings to mind a seeming panacea of an earlier age: aspirin.
Meeting on the development of artificial intelligence technologies
Before the meeting, the head of state was told about the academic process at School 21 and had a brief conversation with students. The President was informed about the school by Head of Sberbank German Gref and school Principal Svetlana Infimovskaya. The students of the school can study the following areas: Algorithms, Graphics, Mobile Development, Computer Security, Robot Technology, and Artificial Intelligence to name a few. The school has 940 students today. On average, students are expected to study for 2โ3.5 years. The course includes two practical training sessions in relevant companies for six months or more. Today I suggest that we discuss concrete steps that will form the foundation for our National Strategy on the development of artificial intelligence technologies. We have repeatedly spoken about the need for such a comprehensive document. I also mentioned it in this year's Address to the Federal Assembly. This is indeed one of the key areas of technological development that determines and will continue to determine the future of the entire world. The artificial intelligence mechanisms will allow for quick real-time decision-making based on analysing vast amounts of information known as big data, which provides tremendous advantages in terms of quality and performance. In addition, such mechanisms are unparalleled in history in terms of their impact on the economy and productivity, the effectiveness of management, education, healthcare and daily life. However, vying for technological leadership, primarily, in the sphere of artificial intelligence โ and you are all very well aware of this, colleagues โ has already lead to global competition. New products and solutions are being created at an exponential growth rate. I have said it before and I will say it now: he who can establish a monopoly in artificial intelligence โ we are aware of the consequences โ will rule the world. It is no accident that many developed countries of the world have already adopted action plans to develop such technologies. Of course, we must ensure technological sovereignty in the realm of artificial intelligence. This is the most important prerequisite for the viability of our businesses and the economy, the quality of life for Russian citizens, security and, finally, our defence capability. Here, we are not just talking about algorithms for addressing individual and highly specialised problems; what we need are universal solutions, the use of which gives the optimum effect in any industry. In order to achieve such an ambitious goal in AI technology, we are objectively positioned to have a good start and we have a serious competitive edge. Today, Russia boasts one of the world's highest penetration rates for mobile communications and internet access, as well as for the development of electronic services.
Microsoft reaffirms AI will augment the human experience rather than replace it ZDNet
Microsoft Australia's national technology officer Lee Hickin has reaffirmed that artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are not replacing humans in the workforce, but are placing humans into positions where they can provide more value in their work. Speaking at ZDNet's Next Big Thing event in Sydney on Thursday, Hickin said the implementation of AI into work environments will augment the human experience, rather than replace it altogether. Using Microsoft's work at Northern Territory fisheries as an example, Hickin said the implementation of AI can "take away what we would call'grunt work' in jobs and functions". The AI fisheries project uses the company's Azure Cognitive Service to identify and count fish in waters without needing to sort through hours of under-water footage. The solution has already shown that the local golden snapper and black jewfish species are overfished.
