This practice violates California law, which prohibits the recording of oral communications without the consent of all parties to the communication," a complaint filed Tuesday on behalf of an 8-year-old boy in California Superior Court states. "This prohibition recognizes the unique privacy interest implicated by the recording of someone's voice.

The artificial intelligence studies footage of plants near the line taken from trains and attempts to spot when leaves change colour, indicating that they might fall. It can also warn of fallen trees and when vegetation growth might soon obstruct the path of trains and lead to delays. The project is one of 24 high-tech schemes that have today been funded a total of £7.8 million ($9.9 million) by the UK government to improve the nation's railways. UK invests £18.5m to boost diversity in artificial intelligence
The government has announced an investment of up to £18.5m to support efforts to enhance diversity in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science roles. Part of a wider plan to upskill the UK workforce as part of the AI Sector Deal to position the country as a leader in use of the technology, £13.5m of the total funding will go towards up to 2,500 AI and data science conversion courses for professionals who have degrees in other disciplines, as well as 1,000 scholarships. The programmes will aim to support applications from professionals returning from a career break and looking to retrain, as well as under-represented groups in the digital workforce, including women and those from minority ethnic or lower socio-economic backgrounds. Around £5m will be invested into the Adult Learning Technology Innovation Fund, to be launched in partnership with innovation foundation Nesta, which will seek to encourage companies to use AI and automation to improve online learning platforms aimed at helping adults retrain. "The UK has a long-standing reputation for innovation, world-leading academic institutions and a business-friendly environment. Everyone, regardless of their background, should have the opportunity to build a successful career in our world-leading tech sector," said digital secretary Jeremy Wright.

After spate of incidents, Japan increases punishments for pilots who drink and fly
The Diet enacted a revised aviation law Thursday that increases punishments for pilots found to have flown under the influence of alcohol or drugs following a series of drinking-related incidents involving Japanese airlines. Under the legislation, which will take effect in stages within one year of its official announcement, the penalty for drinking and flying has been raised from a maximum one-year jail term or ¥300,000 fine to a sentence of up to three years or a ¥500,000 fine. Japanese airlines have already tightened drinking rules, introducing mandatory Breathalyzer tests and relieving pilots of their duties if even a very low level of alcohol is detected. Those flying private planes, however, are not subject to the same checks. The legislation also seeks to improve aviation safety ahead of the intended mid-2020 delivery of the Mitsubishi Regional Jet, Japan's first homegrown commercial passenger jet.
UK companies that adopt AI late or not at all could lose 20pc cash flow, McKinsey report warns
British companies that fail to invest in artificial intelligence soon are at risk of losing 20pc of their cash flow, McKinsey has warned. New figures claim that AI could boost the UK economy by 22pc in the next decade by making companies more productive, and fast-moving businesses could stand to grow in value by 120pc if they invest in AI tools. A new report produced by the consultancy's business and economics research arm McKinsey Global Institute has claimed the UK is "potentially more AI-ready compared with the global average", but could miss out on the opportunity if investment does not occur. "The United Kingdom has impressive pockets of innovation but is failing to scale to business more broadly," the report stated. It cited DeepMind, which was bought by Google for £306m in 2014, and Magic Pony, which was taken over by Twitter in a £102m deal in 2016, as examples of these pockets.
U.S. Universities Criticized For Work With Chinese Security Firm Linked To Xinjiang Camps
A new investigative report by Reuters revealed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at least one other U.S. university have research partnerships with a Chinese firm who has ties with the expansive security system created in China's Xinjiang region on Wednesday. Beijing has been leading an intense campaign against the minority Uighurs in the autonomous region, with the United Nations estimating up to one million currently being held in detention facilities. Reporters uncovered two documents which revealed iFlytek, an artificial intelligence company, was the only supplier of 25 "voiceprint" collection systems for police in Kashgar, a major city in Xinjiang, during 2016. Maya Wang, a senior researcher at Human Rights Watch, said she's heard of people in Xinjiang last May being asked to have their voice recorded using the software, but iFlytek declined to comment on whether that was its technology. A May 2017 blog post also revealed another iFlytek subsidiary signed a "strategic cooperation framework agreement" with Xinjiang's prison administration bureau.
Modeling the Dynamics of PDE Systems with Physics-Constrained Deep Auto-Regressive Networks

In recent years, deep learning has proven to be a viable methodology for surrogate modeling and uncertainty quantification for a vast number of physical systems. However, in their traditional form, such models require a large amount of training data. This is of particular importance for various engineering and scientific applications where data may be extremely expensive to obtain. To overcome this shortcoming, physics-constrained deep learning provides a promising methodology as it only utilizes the governing equations. In this work, we propose a novel auto-regressive dense encoder-decoder convolutional neural network to solve and model transient systems with non-linear dynamics at a computational cost that is potentially magnitudes lower than standard numerical solvers. This model includes a Bayesian framework that allows for uncertainty quantification of the predicted quantities of interest at each time-step. We rigorously test this model on several non-linear transient partial differential equation systems including the turbulence of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, multi-shock formation and interaction with 1D Burgers' equation and 2D wave dynamics with coupled Burgers' equations. For each system, the predictive results and uncertainty are presented and discussed together with comparisons to the results obtained from traditional numerical analysis methods.
