On 18 July, the House of Commons select committee on science and technology published an assessment of the work of the biometrics commissioner and the forensic science regulator. My guess is that most citizens have never heard of these two public servants, which is a pity because what they do is important for the maintenance of justice and the protection of liberty and human rights. The current biometrics commissioner is Prof Paul Wiles. His role is to keep under review the retention and use by the police of biometric material. This used to be just about DNA samples and custody images, but digital technology promises to increase his workload significantly.
Capgemini report shows why AI is the future of cybersecurity

Capitol Watch: New York to take on artificial intelligence
In New York government news, state officials are examining the opportunities -- and risks -- posed by artificial intelligence. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, signed legislation this month that creates a 13-member commission tasked with reviewing the emerging technology and what it will mean for New Yorkers. Meanwhile, the ongoing scourge of opioid abuse is getting some attention with lawmakers announcing a series of public hearings to identify ways the state could do a better job of addressing the problem. While no one is predicting a robot uprising any time soon, state officials say they are concerned by how the rise of artificial intelligence and robotics could affect jobs, the delivery of government services and personal privacy. The New York State Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Automation Commission, approved by lawmakers earlier this year, will also look at how A.I. could be used "in unlawful or unsafe ways."

Amazon.com Inc. sold more than 175 million products across the globe during its 48-hour Prime Day sales event a few weeks ago -- more than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. More than 10 million items qualified for next-day delivery. Making that happen depends on robots. "Speed is the name of the game right now," said Aaron Meyers, senior operations manager at Amazon's four-story fulfillment center in Shakopee, during a recent tour. "The technology allows us to be a lot more safe and efficient, and to get product to our customers much faster."

A new map produced by the digital rights nonprofit Fight for the Future illustrates just how pervasive facial recognition technology is across the country: an overwhelming number of red stars on the map indicate where local and state police are using facial recognition, including in Detroit, Michigan; Lincoln, Nebraska; and Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Cutting Edge of AI Cyber Attacks: Deepfake Audio Used to Impersonate Senior Executives
There is a great deal of public concern about deepfakes, most of it centered on the ramifications of being able to quickly and easily face-swap videos. That concern is certainly well-founded, but it may be obscuring an even more immediate threat – deepfake audio. Voice-swapping has already been put to use in at least a handful of artificial intelligence (AI) cyber attacks on businesses, enabling attackers to gain access to corporate networks and convince employees to authorize a money transfer. The primary use of deepfake audio is to enhance a very common type of attack – business email compromise (BEC). A business email compromise attack usually begins with some sort of phishing to gain access to the company network and reconnoiter the payment systems.

South Australia launches autonomous vehicle trial
The South Australian Government had recently launched a free autonomous vehicle trial that will deliver a first and last mile service between the Playford Alive Township and the Munno Para Train Station. As reported, the autonomous electric bus will run approximately every half hour on weekdays and will carry passengers from the Munno Para Railway Station to the Playford Alive Township, including stops at Mark Oliphant College and the Stretton Centre. The free autonomous shuttle bus service will include a morning and afternoon service window, with passengers collected from designated pick up points on the route. The Munno Para service is phase two of the Playford Connect autonomous bus trial. It follows phase one, which provided a free park and ride service from the Lionsgate Carpark through to the Lyell McEwin Hospital in Elizabeth Vale from October 2018 to June 2019.
Government Should Address Potential Bias in Artificial Intelligence, Lawmakers Say
Bias in artificial intelligence could critically impact the deployment, adoption and evolution of the technology, Democratic lawmakers said in Washington Wednesday. They also detailed their plans to combat the issue and help America maintain its position as a global leader in AI. "We have a real concern about bias in data--is that data bias in some historical way or in some intentional way?" Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Calif., told Politico's Steven Overly at an event held by the publication and technology corporation, Intel. "And we want to make sure the data doesn't harm groups of people or sectors of the country." McNerney, who holds a doctorate in mathematics, elaborated on how algorithm developers implicitly assume that whatever they produce will be logical. Often, it isn't until they look back at the results that they realize they've inserted bias through actions like failing to make important considerations during the process or using data that excluded certain groups of people.
