The Colorado Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CCTSI) recently held the 7th annual CU-CSU Summit on the topic of "AI and Machine Learning in Biomedical Research", with over 150 researchers, clinicians and student attendees from all three CU campuses and CSU. Ronald Sokol, MD, CCTSI director, said, "The purpose of the CCTSI is to accelerate and catalyze translating discoveries into better patient care and population health by bringing together expertise from all our partners." Rather than individual campuses operating in silos, the annual Summit brings together clinicians, basic and clinical researchers, post-doctoral fellows, mathematicians and others to highlight ongoing research excellence, establish collaborations and increase interconnectivity of the four campuses. This year's conference on AI hit capacity for registration, including attendance by more mathematicians and with more poster submissions than the preceding six events.

Microsoft's AI bot is beating top mahjong players
Artificial intelligence has thrashed humans at chess. Now the bots are gunning for mahjong. An AI-powered program developed by Microsoft Corp. has surpassed the average level of the top players in a recent competition in Japan, Harry Shum, executive vice-president of the company's artificial intelligence and research group, said in Shanghai on Thursday. "To those friends who usually lose money in mahjong, this is good news to you," Shum said to laughter at the World AI Conference. "The bot player developed by Microsoft can deal with high uncertainty, presenting instincts akin to human, projection and deduction capabilities as well as a sense of overall consciousness."

As the public becomes increasingly aware of the dangers of AI algorithmic bias and concerned over surveillance and militaristic applications of deep learning, there have been a growing number of calls for AI regulation. In turn, basic economics has ensured that free but heavily biased data wins over costly but minimally biased data.
Explainable AI: A Neurally-Inspired Decision Stack Framework
European Law now requires AI to be explainable in the context of adverse decisions affecting European Union (EU) citizens. At the same time, it is expected that there will be increasing instances of AI failure as it operates on imperfect data. This paper puts forward a neurally-inspired framework called decision stacks that can provide for a way forward in research aimed at developing explainable AI. Leveraging findings from memory systems in biological brains, the decision stack framework operationalizes the definition of explainability and then proposes a test that can potentially reveal how a given AI decision came to its conclusion.

King's Cross Central's developers said they wanted facial-recognition software to spot people on the site who had previously committed an offence there. The detail has emerged in a letter one of its managers sent to the London mayor, on 14 August. Sadiq Khan had sought reassurance using facial recognition on the site was legal. Two days before, Argent indicated it was using it to "ensure public safety". On Monday, it said it had now scrapped work on new uses of the technology.
