But a few years ago, he decided to jump on a hot new trend in his field: artificial intelligence. Doctors like Chang often rely on eye imaging to track the development of conditions like glaucoma. With enough scans, he reasoned, he might find patterns that could help him better interpret test results. That is, if he could get his hands on enough data.

Last year, China unveiled its development of a new artificial intelligence system for its foreign policy. It's called a "geopolitical environment simulation and prediction platform," and it works by crunching huge amounts of data and then providing foreign policy suggestions to Chinese diplomats. According to one source, China has already used a similar AI system to vet almost every foreign investment project in the past few years. Consider what this development means: Slowly, foreign policy is moving away from diplomats, political-risk firms and think tanks, the "go-to" organizations of the past. Slowly, foreign policy is moving toward advanced algorithms whose primary objective is to analyze data, predict events and advise governments on what to do.


AI in cybersecurity: 1 in 3 experts say humans won't be needed in a decade

A third of cybersecurity experts believe the rise of AI in cybersecurity will see the end of humans making security decisions within a decade, according to research published today. In a survey cybersecurity experts conducted at Info Security Europe by One Identity, 33% of cybersecurity experts said that they believed there would be no need for humans to be involved in the cybersecurity decision making process in less than ten years. A further 13% said they thought this would happen in more than ten years, while 14% said they thought there was already no need for humans to make such decisions thanks to the rise of AI in cybersecurity. Only 40% said they thought that AI would never become advanced enough to remove humans from the cybersecurity decision making process. The use of artificial intelligence in the cybersecurity space has seen rapid proliferation in recent years, particularly to automate often mundane and repetitive processes within the space, or to lighten the load of cybersecurity researchers, who are in short supply in a growing field.

The College of Optometrists called AI "the new buzzword in ophthalmology" and over the last 12 months it has been hitting headlines on a regular basis. The definition of AI can mean different things. AI-equipped machines range from purely reactive ones like IBM's Deep Blue, which famously beat international chess grandmaster Gary Kasparov in the 90's, to the most advanced AI technology today which enables machines to teach themselves new skills by looking at, and processing, the world around them. Elon Musk's 'Brain Chip' Could Be Suicide of the Mind, Says Scientist

Elon Musk says merging biological intelligence and artificial intelligence is important to help human beings deal with the AI apocalypse. Almost exactly a month ago, Elon Musk introduced a room of engineers and curious consumers to a sci-fi-sounding invention made by his neurotechnology startup Neuralink: an implantable "brain chip" that will "merge biological intelligence with machine intelligence." Per Musk's description, this chip will be installed in a person's brain by drilling a two-millimeter hole in the skull. "The interface to the chip is wireless, so you have no wires poking out of your head," he assured. Musk argued that such devices will help humans deal with the so-called AI apocalypse, a scenario in which artificial intelligence outpaces human intelligence and takes control of the planet away from the human species.

World War II bomber the De Havilland Mosquito could be back in British skies 'by 2023'

An iconic wooden plane used in the Second World War could be back in the skies by 2023 thanks to an £8million restoration project based on thousands of original drawings. The De Havilland Mosquito bomber hasn't been seen in British airspace since the last one crashed in 1996. But a private project is investing huge amounts of money and years of man-hours to bring'The Wooden Wonder' back to life using more than 22,500 original blueprints from Airbus. The People's Mosquito, working with aircraft reconstruction specialists Retrotec, hope the Rolls-Royce powered machine will be completed in the next four years.
