AI news: UK has the second-highest number of AI companies in the world

You'd be hard pushed to have a conversation about technology today that doesn't mention artificial intelligence (AI) at some point. The technology has massive potential to shape and enhance our working and personal lives, but for all the pros, some remained worried about the downsides. With talk of job loss a result of increased use of AI, should we be that concerned? Perhaps not if analyst firm Gartner's predictions are to be believed. It reckons that AI will eliminate 1.8 million jobs. The good news is that AI will also be responsible for creating 2.3 million jobs by 2020.


Encouraging robot uptake through Europe's network of Digital Innovation Hubs

A recent report by the OECD showed that Europe is only capitalising on a fraction (12%) of its digital potential. Most companies limit their digital use to email and internet. Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) are particularly slow to integrate digital technologies. The recent Digital Economy and Society Index Report found that "Less than a fifth of companies in the EU-28 are highly digitised" and that "Use of robots is low on an EU level, with 6.7% of all enterprises using industrial or service robots. The share of large enterprises that use robots is four times higher than the share of SMEs."


Government to invest over ยฃ130 million in new tech to tackle cancer and debilitating illnesses

People across the country could lead healthier and longer lives following significant government investment in new research to improve treatment, diagnosis and care options for devastating diseases including cancer. The government has today (9 September) unveiled details of how it will help thousands of people across the country living with debilitating, painful and/or sometimes life-threatening diseases by investing ยฃ133 million in life-changing treatments for arthritis and cancer and for pioneering gene-based therapies for diseases including dementia and Parkinson's. Faster, more accurate diagnosis, and earlier interventions will be boosted by ยฃ50 million to be pumped into NHS diagnostic services and support the work of existing Centres of Excellence in digital pathology and imaging with artificial intelligence. The centres โ€“ based in Leeds, Oxford, Coventry and London โ€“ will be able to partner with more NHS Trusts and further develop cutting edge products using digital systems and artificial intelligence that could ultimately save lives. Adult social care will also receive a new cash injection of ยฃ7.5 million to use research to improve care delivery for some of the most vulnerable people in our society and ยฃ14 million for bioscience projects and technologies across the UK that could, for example, treat osteoarthritis and develop new vaccines.


UK start-up wants to help the NHS save ยฃ2bn a year โ€“ by using AI sensors to stop the elderly falling

AI-powered technology that can learn the movements of elderly people may be able to warn carers of falls and declining health โ€“ potentially saving the NHS ยฃ2bn a year. Retirement house-builder McCarthy & Stone has partnered with London technology start-up MySense to trial the sensor and wearable technology in eight of its residential developments this year. As part of the trial, residents will have "smart" sensors that can measure temperature and movement installed in their homes. The sensors can learn an older person's activity patterns to quickly identify health issues or immediate care needs. Residents will also be offered a wearable wristband that can measure steps and heart rate.



AI robot CIMON makes its International Space Station debut

Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) have been joined by an AI robot called CIMON. The current ISS commander, German astronaut Alexander Gerst, was first to speak with CIMON. Gerst said "Wake up, CIMON" which prompted the robot to respond "What can I do for you?" CIMON and Gerst's first assignment was to perform a student-designed experiment with crystals. The robot, after recognising Gerst's face and positioning itself autonomously, provided instructions on how to conduct the experiment. On Earth, CIMON weight just five kilograms and was designed by Airbus.


Rocket fired at southern Israel from Gaza following Israeli aircraft strike for drone 'attack'

"A failed launch was spotted from the Gaza Strip. It did not cross into Israeli territory," the army said, as the Times of Israel reported.


US intelligence community says quantum computing and AI pose an 'emerging threat' to national security โ€“ TechCrunch

It's not often you can put nuclear weapons, terrorism and climate change on the same list as quantum computing, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, but the U.S. government believes all pose an "emerging threat" to its national security. Several key agencies in the U.S. intelligence community were asked what they saw as long-term threats faced by the country in the next decade and beyond, and the future of "dual-use technologies" took center stage. Agnostic technologies like encryption, autonomous and unmanned systems, AI and quantum computing rank at the top of the agencies' "worry list" for fears that they could be used to cause harm, rather than advance society. While all can be used for good -- to secure data, to survey a dangerous area or simply to save time and effort -- the government says that all can have disastrous effects if used by an adversary. For example, the government says that, "adversaries could gain increased access to AI through affordable designs used in the commercial industry, and could apply AI to areas such as weapons and technology," and that "quantum communications could enable adversaries to develop secure communications that U.S. personnel would not be able to intercept or decrypt."

This article will focus on the impact of AI, 5G, Edge Computing on the healthcare sector in the 2020s as well as a section on Quantum Computing's potential impact on AI, healthcare and financial services. The next in the series will deal with how we can use AI in the fight against climate change including the protection of the Amazon, smart cities and AGI. For those who are new to AI, Machine Learning and Deep Learning, I recommend taking a look at the following article entitled "An Introduction to AI." I will refer to Machine Learning and Deep Learning as being subsets of AI. Furthermore, this article is non-exhaustive in relation to potential applications of AI to healthcare and Quantum Computing to various sectors of the economy.
