A former Google engineer has expressed fears about a new generation of robots that could carry out'atrocities and unlawful killings'. Laura Nolan, who previously worked on the tech giant's military drone initiative, Project Maven, is calling for the ban of all autonomous war drones, as these machines do not have the same common sense or discernment as humans. Project Maven focused on enhancing drones with artificial intelligence (AI) to distinguish enemy targets from people and other objects – but was discontinued after employees protested the technology in development, calling it'evil'. Nolan, who left Google in 2018 in protest against the US military drone technology, is now calling for all drones not operated by humans to fall under the same ban as chemical weapons, according to The Guardian. Cruise missiles and drones used in the weekend assault on Saudi Arabia's oil installations were launched from Iranian soil, U.S. officials told Fox News on Monday. The early morning strikes Saturday that hit Aramco's main crude processing facility knocked out 5.7 million barrels of daily oil production for Saudi Arabia -- or more than 5 percent of the world's daily crude production. Defense Secretary Mark Esper attended an emergency National Security Council meeting on Sunday at the White House along with Vice President Pence, where military options were discussed, officials told Fox News. Earlier Monday in Austria, Energy Secretary Rick Perry placed the blame for the attack squarely on Iran.

Air Force officials said the recent release of the branch's Artificial Intelligence Strategy emphasizes the importance of artificial intelligence capabilities to 21st-century missions. "The Air Force is charged to provide the nation with Air and Space Superiority, Global Strike, Rapid Global Mobility, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance and Command Control," Matthew Donovan, acting secretary of the Air Force, and Air Force Chief of Staff General David Goldfein said in the dual-signed annex. DeepMind's AI predicts kidney injury up to 48 hours before it happens TMG Pulse

Acute kidney injury, or AKI, is a condition in which the kidneys stop filtering waste products from the blood. It occurs quickly (in two days or less) and debilitates an estimated 1 in 5 hospitalized patients in the U.K. and 1 in 4 hospitalized patients in the U.S. Worse still, because it's difficult to detect, AKI kills upwards of 600,000 people annually in both countries combined despite the more than $1.2 billion (£1 billion) the U.K.'s National Health Service (NHS) spends treating it each year. The U.K.-based AI research firm said it's made progress toward automated systems addressing the 11% of failures to detect AKI deterioration in U.S. hospitals and the 30% of preventable cases globally. Over the course of two separate joint studies conducted with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (RFL), DeepMind's health care division -- DeepMind Health -- investigated ways to flag AKI warning signs clinicians might otherwise fail to spot. The resulting pair of papers published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR) and Nature Digital Medicine reveal the fruit of the organizations' labor: an algorithm that can predict the presence of AKI up to 48 hours in advance and an app that cuts missed AKI cases from 12.4% to 3.3%.
