AI.mil - Accelerating DoD's Adoption & Integration of AI
We acquire and develop mature AI technology by partnering across three key communities: the Armed Services and DoD Components; academia and commercial AI industry; and America's international allies and partners. The JAIC's National Mission Initiatives (NMIs) and Component Mission Initiatives (CMIs) will directly deliver AI capability on behalf of the Armed Services and DoD Components. The JAIC's Joint Common Foundation (JCF) is a cloud-enabled AI platform that will accelerate the development, testing, and fielding of new AI capabilities. Use of a common AI platform with shared infrastructure resources ensures progress by one DoD AI initiative will build momentum across the entire DoD enterprise. We leverage AI innovations to build solutions that are aligned with America's laws and values.

The first 5 chapters of this blog post series summarize the mitigation part of the paper, which is concerned with preventing or slowing down climate change. The paper however contains another major part called adaption, which is not covered in this series. This part discusses opportunities how humanity can use machine learning to better adapt to upcoming changes and crisis. Another small part of the paper discusses meta tools, among other things how ML can improve personalized education.

Cities not ready for AI โ even the world's smartest can't handle getting any smarter
No city in the world is ready for the disruption that artificial intelligence (AI) will bring. This is the conclusion of a new review by management consultancy Oliver Wyman, which considers the readiness of 105 cities to cope with AI-inspired digital change, and finds even the smartest need to make urgent and "significant improvements". The study ranks cities on four criteria: the quality of their plan (defined as'vision'); their ability to execute on it ('activation'); the quality of their talent and infrastructure ('asset base'); and how the interplay of these last two, their activation and assets, impact their overall momentum ('trajectory'). Singapore is most prepared overall, the report says, with an average score of 75.8 out of 100 across the four criteria. But the review states no city is even close to being fully prepared.

On Monday, 16-year-old Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg made an intense and emotionally charged speech at the United Nations, begging world leaders to step up their commitment to protecting the planet's future. Headlines around the world echo her rallying cry, accusing our leaders of failing us. I wholeheartedly agree that governments can, and should, do more to confront climate change. But I have been equally curious about how cutting-edge technology is being used to fight and shelter against the effects of global warming.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security defines trafficking referred to as modern-day slavery, as a crime that involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act. AI and ML, have the power to analyze more than just financial activity. The current anti-money laundering (AML) environment relies on simple transaction-monitoring rules to detect human trafficking, and it simply does not have the capacity to consider, weight and examine the necessary number of inputs. The problem with it now is that it produces a lot of false positives, so the real issues are lost in the weeds. If you use more machine learning, you can program more variables and machines can use the information it has and then teach itself how to better identify patterns.
