How India Is Preparing For A Facial Recognition System
National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) under the Government of India has released a tender asking for bidders to help create Automated Facial Recognition System (AFRS). The objective is to leverage the power of facial recognition technology to make the security forces more efficient. The technology system which has been proposed will make an extensive database of photos belonging to Indian citizens using which machine learning models will be trained. The criminals will be identified using CCTV footage from the database, verified, and information will be distributed to all law enforcement agencies in real-time across the country. Intel and Brown University research will use AI to treat spinal cord injuries - SiliconANGLE
Researchers from Brown University and Intel Corp. are working together to develop new artificial intelligence-based technologies aimed at helping victims of spinal injuries walk again. When someone suffers an injury to the spinal cord, the electrical signals from the brain can no longer pass to the muscles, which leads to paralysis. Such injuries are devastating because the human body cannot regenerate severed nerve fibers by itself. But medical professionals believe that AI technologies could help some victims to regain control of their muscles. Now, backed by a $6.3 million grant from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the researchers from Brown University and Intel are embarking on a two-year effort to create those technologies.
Faster video recognition for the smartphone era
A branch of machine learning called deep learning has helped computers surpass humans at well-defined visual tasks like reading medical scans, but as the technology expands into interpreting videos and real-world events, the models are getting larger and more computationally intensive. By one estimate, training a video-recognition model can take up to 50 times more data and eight times more processing power than training an image-classification model. That's a problem as demand for processing power to train deep learning models continues to rise exponentially and concerns about AI's massive carbon footprint grow. Running large video-recognition models on low-power mobile devices, where many AI applications are heading, also remains a challenge. Song Han, an assistant professor at MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), is tackling the problem by designing more efficient deep learning models.
SEC selects Casepoint for its cloud-based e-discovery pilot
Casepoint was selected over a number of other e-discovery technology solutions after undergoing a rigorous multi-step evaluation process. The SEC's evaluation factors included assessing software features and functionality, cybersecurity, management and key personnel, past performance, and a competitive proof of concept process. The SEC receives approximately 3,500 new productions, totaling nearly 10TB after processing, each month. The SEC's existing e-discovery systems contain almost 1PB of data across 7,300 cases and must support 600 users in its Washington, D.C. headquarters and 1,200 additional users across its 11 regional offices nationwide. It was imperative that the SEC chose an enterprise-scale solution that is fast, powerful, and easy-to-use.

Up until this point in time, we have largely trusted our eyes and ears when consuming audio and visual media content, but new technological systems that create something known as deepfakes, are changing that. And as these deepfake videos nudge into the mainstream, experts are increasingly worried about the ramifications it will have on the information sharing that underpins society. Dr Richard Nock is the head of machine learning at CSIRO's Data 61 and understands the daunting potential of the technology that powers deepfake videos.
