Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin will enlist aerospace companies like Lockheed Martin to build lunar lander

Blue Origin said it will no longer go-it-alone on the development of a lander designed to bring humans back to the lunar surface. In a press conference from the Jeff Bezos-owned aerospace company, Brent Sherwood, vice president of advanced development programs, said Blue Origin will team up with legacy defense and aerospace contractors like Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman, and Draper to bring its lander, called Blue Moon, to fruition. It's partnership with those companies will help expedite the Blue Moon's production and also increase the odds that Blue Origin meets an ambitious 2024 deadline to return to the moon set by NASA. 'This is the kind of thing that is so ambitious, it needs to be done with partners,' said Bezos, who owns e-taling stalwart Amazon, at the 70th International Astronautical Congress held this week in Washington. 'This is the only way to get back to the Moon fast.'

Artificial intelligence has been around since 1956 when the term was first coined. Those in the industry know that there has been previous hype and then disillusionment around AI. The period of decline of interest in AI is known in the industry as an AI winter, and has happened twice before. An AI winter is a point at which research, investment, and funding for AI goes into a period of decline and it's hard to get funding for research or other projects that have to do with artificial intelligence, and talent and companies focus their efforts elsewhere. Today, there is a lot of hype surrounding artificial intelligence, but is AI around to stay or will it see its period of interest peak and wane as it has in the past?


World's first artificial intelligence varsity in Abu Dhabi

It is the first graduate level, research-based AI university in the world. MBZUAI will enable graduate students, businesses, and governments to advance artificial intelligence. The university is named after His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, who has long advocated for the UAE's development of human capital through knowledge and scientific thinking to take the nation into the future. MBZUAI will introduce a new model of academia and research to the field of AI, providing students and faculty access to some of the world's most advanced AI systems to unleash its potential for economic and societal development. The announcement was made at a press conference at the University campus in Masdar City and was immediately followed by the first meeting of the MBZUAI Board of Trustees. Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of State, who has been appointed Chair of the MBZUAI board of trustees and is spearheading the establishment of the University, said: "Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence aligns with the vision of the UAE leadership that is based on sustainable development, progress and the overall well-being of humanity and underpinned by capacity-building and active participation in finding practical solutions based on innovation and state-of-the-art technology.


ML (Machine Learning) at Georgia Tech

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has given three institutions a $5.5 million grant to collectively find solutions to some of the most challenging problems in artificial intelligence (AI) today. Scientists from Georgia Tech, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratory will collaborate to develop technologies that are core to the DOE's priorities including cybersecurity, graph analytics, and electric grid resilience. Tushar Krishna, an assistant professor in Georgia Tech's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Machine Learning Center (ML@GT), will serve as a deputy director of the newly established Center for Artificial Intelligence-focused Architectures and Algorithms (ARIAA). Georgia Tech is contributing expertise in modeling and developing custom accelerators for machine learning and sparse linear algebra. The institute will also provide access to its advanced computing resources.


FDA Clears Subtle Medical's AI-Powered Image Enhancement Software

Subtle Medical today announced its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered image processing software, SubtleMR, received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). SubtleMR uses deep learning algorithms, denoising and resolution enhancement to improve the image quality of existing scanners. "We are pleased to received FDA clearance for SubtleMR, and we look forward to helping radiology departments and imaging centers get the most out of their existing MRI scanners," said Enhao Gong, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Subtle Medical. The software, which Subtle Medical said is compatible with any brand of MRI scanner and picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), could be beneficial for patients who have trouble staying still for long periods of time. Reducing the scan time for these patients not only improves the patient experience but could result in fewer artifact-ridden images and the need for physicians to re-scan an individual.

Fake news is believed to have played an important role in such important electoral processes as the 2016 US presidential election and the Brexit referendum on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union the same year. There is now another kind of fake that is causing concern: deep fakes (a portmanteau of deep learning and fake). A deep fake is the use of artificial intelligence to create and edit seemingly real videos and audio recordings of people. To do this, deepfakes use Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), which are a kind of algorithm that can create new data from existing datasets.

Two thirds of financial services firms currently deploy machine learning and expect to increase their use of the technology within the next three years. The Bank of England and the UK Financial Conduct Authority conducted a joint survey this year on the current use of machine learning, a methodology where computer programmes fit a model or recognise patterns from data, without being explicitly programmed and with limited or no human intervention. This contrasts with'rules-based algorithms' where the human programmer explicitly decides what decisions are being taken under which states of the world. The study said the median firm uses live machine learning applications in two business areas and this is expected to more than double within the next three years. Bank of England's machine learning paper is also interesting.
