France's AI startup scene grew 38% in 2019 with government and investor backing

France's aggressive push to develop its AI ecosystem seems to be paying dividends as the number of startups continues to soar. A new report released today identified 432 AI-related startups in France, up from 312 last year and 180 back in 2016. The report was produced by Roland Berger, a global consulting firm, and France Digitale, an association that represents venture capitalist and entrepreneurs. "It's fantastic news," said Nicholas Brien, CEO of France Digitale. The report was released on the eve of the 4th annual France is AI conference that is being held Wednesday at the Station F startup campus in Paris.

Technology skills such as Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), digital marketing and design thinking will be important to drive the future growth, finds a survey by ed-tech firm Great Learning. The analysis of 307 corporates (ranging from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to large corporate) focussed on finding out top skills that organisations will need to drive future performance and how they may plan to bridge the impending skill deficit among their ranks. As per the survey, 25 per cent of all companies believe AI/ML are the most crucial skills needed to ensure an organisation's future growth. Digital marketing emerged second with 19 per cent finding it most crucial. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met with the members of JP Morgan's International Council in New Delhi and discussed his vision for making India a USD 5 trillion economy by 2024.

HONG KONG – Hong Kong law enforcement authorities have access to artificial intelligence software that can match faces from video footage to police databases, but people familiar with the matter say it is unclear if the technology is being used to quell the pro-democracy protests. Police have been able to use the technology from the Sydney-based iOmniscient for at least three years, and engineers from the company have trained dozens of officers on how to use it, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the information isn't public. The software can scan footage, including from closed-circuit television, to match faces and license plates to a police database and pick out suspects in a crowd. In addition to tracking criminals, iOminiscient's artificial intelligence can be used for everything from finding lost children to managing traffic. In one training session after the protests began in June, the people said, officers asked how to automatically identify license plate numbers using dashboard cameras.


Stone Soup: Cooking Up Custom Solutions with SQL Server Machine Learning

This article describes the machine learning services provided in SQL Server 2017, which support in-database use of the Python and R languages. The integration of SQL Server with open source languages popular for machine learning makes it easier to use the appropriate tool--SQL, Python, or R--for data exploration and modeling. R and Python scripts can also be used in T-SQL scripts or Integration Services packages, expanding the capabilities of ETL and database scripting. What has this to do with stone soup, you ask? It's a metaphor, of course, but one that captures the essence of why SQL Server works so well with Python and R. To illustrate the point, I'll provide a simple walkthrough of data exploration and modeling combining SQL and Python, using a food and nutrition analysis dataset from the US Department of Agriculture. You might have heard that data science is more of a craft than a science. Many ingredients have to come together efficiently, to process intake data and generate models and predictions that can be consumed by business users and end customers. However, what works well at the level of "craftsmanship" often has to change at commercial scale. Much like the home cook who has ventured out of the kitchen into a restaurant or food factory, big changes are required in the roles, ingredients, and processes. Moreover, cooking can no longer be a "one-man show;" you need the help of professionals with different specializations and their own tools to create a successful product or make the process more efficient. These specialists include data scientists, data developers and taxonomists, SQL developers, DBAS, application developers, and the domain specialists or end users who consume the results. Any kitchen would soon be chaos if the tools used by each professional were incompatible with each other, or if processes had to be duplicated and slightly changed at each step. What restaurant would survive if carrots chopped up at one station were unusable at the next?

Machine-Learning Analysis Could Help Reduce Carbon Emissions SBU News

In a novel approach that could help reduce carbon emissions, a team of scientists led by Stony Brook's Anatoly Frenkel have described a way to use artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into methane. By using this method to track the size, structure, and chemistry of catalytic particles under real reaction conditions, the scientists can identify which properties correspond to the best catalytic performance, and then use that information to guide the design of more efficient catalysts. "Improving our ability to convert CO2 to methane would'kill two birds with one stone' by making a sustainable non-fossil-fuel energy source that can be easily stored and transported while reducing carbon emissions," said Anatoly Frenkel, a chemist with a joint appointment at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Stony Brook University. Frenkel is a professor of Materials Science in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Frenkel's group has been developing a machine-learning approach to extract catalytic properties from x-ray signatures of catalysts collected as chemicals are transformed in reactions.

With automation looming, Amazon is investing $700 million to retrain 100,000 U.S.-based workers for new jobs. The goal is to shift one-third of Amazon's workforce by 2025 into in-demand jobs at the company that focus on software engineering, data sciences, robotics, and coordinating logistics to ship products. Still, the company says its free retraining programs will help employees get "highly skilled roles within or outside of Amazon." "The American workforce is changing. There is a greater need for technical skills in the workplace than ever before. Amazon is no exception," the company said in the announcement.
