Artificial intelligence has replaced many skills in recent years – including the skills needed to do some human jobs. The tech revolution has not gone unnoticed by American workers. A 2018 Gallup poll revealed that 70% of Americans believe AI will eliminate more jobs than it creates. Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang has sounded the alarm, raising the prospect that millions are at risk for long-term joblessness. I'm an expert on labor markets in the U.S., and I believe that AI will undoubtedly change the future of U.S. labor – but Yang is also exaggerating the impact AI will have on the workforce.

Over the last four years, more than 50,000 participants have developed and submitted over 114,000 artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to improve everything from detection of lung cancer and heart disease, to monitoring ocean health and helping accelerate life-saving medical research as part of the annual Data Science Bowl . In partnership with PBS KIDS, this year's competition will look at advancements in early childhood education. The results will lead to better designed games and improved learning outcomes, empowering children, parents, caregivers and educators across the globe with insights into how young children learn through media and which approaches work best to help them build on foundational learning skills. The 90-day Data Science Bowl competition will award winning participants with a share of $160,000 in cash prizes. Research shows much of the most critical brain development in children takes place before they even reach kindergarten.

Incode raises $10 million to verify identities with AI

Incode, a San Francisco startup developing what it describes as an omnichannel biometric identity platform, today announced that it's raised $10 million in seed funding from undisclosed investors. Founder and CEO Ricardo Amper said that the newfound capital will enable Incode to accelerate the development and rollout of its tools globally, some of which are already being used by major banks, financial institutions, governments, and retailers. "The modern consumer is all about experiences and convenience," said Amper. "What they want is a seamless, consistent and secure way to perform daily tasks like access their ATM, make payments, and access online accounts. Yet, what they get today is quite the opposite. The ecosystem is fragmented by multiple vendors and devices, making processes clunky and inefficient. The contract between the UK's National Health Service (NHS) and ecommerce giant Amazon -- for a health information licensing partnership involving its Alexa voice AI -- has been released following a Freedom of Information request. The government announced the partnership this summer. But the date on the contract, which was published on the gov.uk contracts finder site months after the FOI was filed, shows the open-ended arrangement to funnel nipped-and-tucked health advice from the NHS' website to Alexa users in audio form was inked back in December 2018. The contract is between the UK government and Amazon US (Amazon Digital Services, Delaware) -- rather than Amazon UK. Nor is it a standard NHS Choices content syndication contract.


Artificial Intelligence Rivals Experts in Diagnosing Brain Bleeds

A deep learning algorithm can accurately detect acute intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) on head CT on par with highly trained neuroradiologists, in some cases identifying subtle abnormalities overlooked by the radiologists, new research shows. Only a "handful" of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in medical image interpretation have achieved this level of accuracy, Esther Yuh, PhD, of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), told Medscape Medical News. The study was supported by the California Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine and was published online October 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Head CT is the "workhorse" medical imaging modality for diagnosing neurologic emergencies, such as acute traumatic brain injury, stroke, and aneurysmal hemorrhage, the investigators note. "However, these gray scale images are limited by low signal-to-noise, poor contrast, and a high incidence of image artifacts. A unique challenge is to identify tiny subtle abnormalities in a large 3D volume with near-perfect sensitivity," they write.


SMEs must train workforce in AI, Machine Learning, but haven't spent money on it yet

Technology for MSMEs: As the fourth industrial revolution is seemingly upon us with deep technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) being its key drivers, small and emerging businesses in India are increasingly becoming cognizant of upskilling themselves in modern technologies to drive their future growth, according to a survey by upskilling company Great Learning. AI/ML, digital marketing followed by design thinking are the most crucial skills required to stay relevant in the future, according to 25 per cent, 19 per cent, and 10 per cent of 307 businesses surveyed with the majority being small and medium-sized businesses. "Lack of skilled talent in technology is among the key problems that businesses face in India. Even though companies know about the need to bridge this gap, they must take steps immediately towards it," Hari Krishnan Nair, Co-founder, Great Learning told Financial Express Online. Importantly, despite the awareness, 47 per cent of the businesses haven't assigned the budget for upskilling yet even as nearly 30 per cent firms said that they spend over Rs 1 lakh per employee per annum on upskilling and another around 14 per cent spend over Rs 3 lakh per employee per annum for the same.
