Booz Allen, Kaggle, PBS KIDS Aim to Advance Early Education with Data Science
In partnership with PBS KIDS, this year's competition will look at advancements in early childhood education. The results will lead to better designed games and improved learning outcomes, empowering children, parents, caregivers, and educators across the globe with insights into how young children learn through media and which approaches work best to help them build on foundational learning skills. The 90-day Data Science Bowl competition will award winning participants with a share of $160,000 in cash prizes. Research shows much of the most critical brain development in children takes place before they even reach kindergarten. Child development experts indicate it is during these first 5 years that children develop linguistic, cognitive, social, emotional, and regulatory skills that predict their later functioning in many domains.

How the Use of RPA Helps the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Analytics Insight
A division within the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) has currently seven RPA (Robotic Process Automation) projects in development as it works to free up staff for its core science mission. The center has used RPA for a year with plans to implement bots to Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP) for applications in regulatory review. CDER ensures safe and effective drugs on the market to improve the health of the people throughout their lifecycle. While the FDA is recognized in the RPA space for automating drug intake forms and work within its chief financial officer's office, CDER has quietly put several RPA use cases into production enterprise-wide. It regulates over-the-counter and prescription drugs, including biological therapeutics and generic drugs.

Like any new technology, artificial intelligence is capable of immensely good or bad outcomes. The public seems increasingly focused on the bad, especially when it comes to the potential for bias in AI. This concern is both well-founded and well-documented. It is the simulation of human processes by machines. This fear of biased AI ignores a critical fact: The deepest-rooted source of bias in AI is the human behavior it is simulating. It is the biased data set used to train the algorithm.
Resistance to Medical Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing healthcare, but little is known about consumer receptivity to AI in medicine. Consumers are reluctant to utilize healthcare provided by AI in real and hypothetical choices, separate and joint evaluations. Consumers are less likely to utilize healthcare (study 1), exhibit lower reservation prices for healthcare (study 2), are less sensitive to differences in provider performance (studies 3Aโ3C), and derive negative utility if a provider is automated rather than human (study 4). Uniqueness neglect, a concern that AI providers are less able than human providers to account for consumers' unique characteristics and circumstances, drives consumer resistance to medical AI. Indeed, resistance to medical AI is stronger for consumers who perceive themselves to be more unique (study 5). AI World Attendees Discuss Artificial Intelligence Vision in Enterprise
Enthusiasm may remain high for organizations around the prospects of artificial intelligence (AI). However, people still have concerns around data integrity and integrations. According to an Accenture survey on European government organizations, more than two-thirds (71%) foresee trouble procuring data integrity and processing capabilities. Even more (84%) cited challenges in adapting AI logic and reasoning to their industry context; another 81% said they experienced challenges integrating AI technologies into their back-office operations. CMSWire was on hand at last week's AI World in Boston at the Seaport World Trade Center to catch up with those wanting to learning more about adopting AI into the enterprise.

GE Healthcare and Intel have a new software hardware combination that can get the most critical X-rays to the top an ER doctor's review stack. The new solution puts GE's mobile, digital X-ray system, its artificial intelligence-powered Critical Care Suite, and Intel's computer vision platform OpenVINO in one product. The Critical Care algorithms are embedded in the imaging devices to speed up image processing time. OpenVINO improves computing power to allow hospitals to deploy this new service on existing hardware. "So, the thing that's actually capturing the images is also doing the processing," said Todd Minnigh, CMO X-Ray, GE Healthcare, in a press release.

New York is investigating UnitedHealth's use of a medical algorithm that steered black patients away from getting higher-quality care
UnitedHealth Group used technology that may have kept sick black patients from receiving high-quality care. New York's state departments of financial services and health sent a letter to UnitedHealth Group over its use of an algorithm that researchers found to be racially biased. Per the Wall Street Journal, the missive is an initial step into a larger investigation. The algorithm in question, Impact Pro, identifies which patients would benefit from complex health procedures favored treating white patients than sicker black ones between 2013 and 2015, according to a study published in the prestigious journal Science. New York lawmakers deemed the use of this discriminatory technology "unlawful," and asked to either demonstrate the algorithm is not biased or to stop using Impact Pro immediately.

HeartVista is hoping to increase the use of CardiacMRI's. To achieve this goal, the Los Altos, CA-based company has developed the One Click Cardiac Package MRI software, which recently received FDA clearance. "It has been widely excepted in the clinical community and the scientific community that cardiac MRI is the gold standard for everything that you can almost do or diagnose in a cardiac setting," Itamar Kandel, HeartVista's CEO, told MD DI. "But the problem is that the actual scan itself is very complex; takes a lot of time, and takes a very high level of skill to even perform." He added, "You have this situation where the best technology is not approachable to the vast majority of the needs. The problem we came to solve is to bring this technology to the masses -to democratize Cardiac MRI." HeartVista's FDA-cleared Cardiac Package uses AI-assisted software to prescribe the standard cardiac views with just one click, and in as few as 10 seconds, while the patient breathes freely.
