SC Proposes Introduction Of Artificial Intelligence In Justice Delivery System

After creating waves across startups, artificial intelligence (AI) seems to have now entered the doors of justice. The Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde, has recently said that the Supreme Court has proposed to introduce a system of AI which would help in better administration of justice delivery and constitution. The CJI also made it clear that the automation would not replace humans. He said that the judiciary would continue to rely on the knowledge and wisdom of judges and the deployment of an AI integration would help reduce the number of pending cases and improve the efficiency of the judicial system. "We propose to introduce, if possible, a system of artificial intelligence. There are many things which we need to look at before we introduce ourselves. We do not want to give the impression that this is ever going to substitute the judges," said the CJI at the Constitution Day function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association.


'Faster with AI': Indonesia to replace ministerial aides with machines

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has said the government will replace some civil service positions with artificial intelligence, instructing ministers to remove two ranks of public servants. "I have ordered ministers to replace echelon III and IV officials with AI [because] our bureaucracy will be faster with AI, but it would depend on the omnibus law," the president said in Jakarta on Thursday, adding that doing so would cut red tape. He referred to a planned law that would synchronize more than 70 overlapping laws and regulations. Jokowi said the current four echelon tiers would be reduced to two by next year as AI was set to replace top civil service posts. He, however, did not elaborate on how the government would go about the plan.

The following is an edited transcript of their interview. Matt Price: Audio deepfakes are just synthetic audio usually trained on a certain person's voice, such as the CEO of a company, and then you're able to then feed text into that algorithm, which then generates the appropriate words using that person's synthetic voice. Video deepfakes, on the other hand, those are videos where you usually copy someone's face onto either an actor or just replace that original person's face, making them say something they never really said. So this can be very short spans of time.

In a marathon day of testimony before the House Armed Services Committee, Secretary of Defense Barry McDermott revealed how the PLA's cyber branch used artificial intelligence and the "internet of things" to help Chinese conventional forces achieve strategic military aims far from the conventional battlefield in Taiwan. McDermott told committee members the artificial-intelligence capabilities China employed will force a redefinition of "the battlefield" and must change how the US military trains for future conflict.

Artificial intelligence opens door to risk-free future

There's no question that artificial intelligence and data analytics are reshaping the resources sector. These new technologies bring new challenges in the way companies consider risk, adapt to new ways of working and the skills needed for the future. These issues were the topic of conversation at a business roundtable lunch hosted by professional services firm Accenture in its new Perth Innovation Hub this week as part of the Resources Technology Showcase program of events. Invited guests, including leading policymakers and industry heavyweights, heard former SAS commander and Mettle Global managing partner Ben Pronk speak about the need to take calculated risks in the battlefield. He explained how the resources industry could adopt that philosophy to take advantage of the fourth industrial revolution.


An Anomaly Contribution Explainer for Cyber-Security Applications

--In this paper we introduce Anomaly Contribution Explainer or ACE, a tool to explain security anomaly detection models in terms of the model features through a regression framework, and its variant, ACE-KL, which highlights the important anomaly contributors. ACE and ACE-KL provide insights in diagnosing which attributes significantly contribute to an anomaly by building a specialized linear model to locally approximate the anomaly score that a black-box model generates. We conducted experiments with these anomaly detection models to detect security anomalies on both synthetic data and real data. In particular, we evaluate performance on three public data sets: CERT insider threat, netflow logs, and Android malware. The experimental results are encouraging: our methods consistently identify the correct contributing feature in the synthetic data where ground truth is available; similarly, for real data sets, our methods point a security analyst in the direction of the underlying causes of an anomaly, including in one case leading to the discovery of previously overlooked network scanning activity. We have made our source code publicly available. Cyber-security is a key concern for both private and public organizations, given the high cost of security compromises and attacks; malicious cyber-activity cost the U.S. economy between $57 billion and $109 billion in 2016 [1]. As a result, spending on security research and development, and security products and services to detect and combat cyber-attacks has been increasing [2]. Organizations produce large amounts of network, host and application data that can be used to gain insights into cyber-security threats, misconfigurations, and network operations. While security domain experts can manually sift through some amount of data to spot attacks and understand them, it is virtually impossible to do so at scale, considering that even a medium sized enterprise can produce terabytes of data in a few hours.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly changing the lives of everyday Singaporeans. In the latest Smart Nation development, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Heng Swee Keat announced on Wednesday (Nov 13) that the nation will embark on a "national AI strategy" that plans out ways it will develop and use AI technology. The plan will consist of five "National AI" projects as a start. These will be employed in the sectors of logistics, healthcare, border security, estate management and education management. These sectors were chosen as they have high social and economic impacts, said the Smart Nation and Digital Government Office (SNDGO) in a statement.
