Artificial intelligence is a double-edged sword that can be used as a security solution or as a weapon by hackers. AI entails developing programs and systems capable of exhibiting traits associated with human behaviors. The characteristics include the ability to adapt to a particular environment or to intelligently respond to a situation. AI technologies have extensively been applied in cybersecurity solutions, but hackers are also leveraging them to develop intelligent malware programs and execute stealth attacks. Security experts have conducted a lot of research to harness the capabilities of AI and incorporate it into security solutions.

The conference was designed to not only demystify the application of AI in defence, but to also reflect on the responsible use of AI. Approximately 70 individuals from EU member state governments, EU institutions, industry and academia attended the event and the organisers had the pleasure of welcoming speakers from the Estonian Ministry of Defence, the European Commission, the European Defence Agency, the European Parliament, the EU Satellite Centre, the Finnish Ministry of Defence, NATO, the Political and Security Committee and industry and academia. Participants engaged in a stimulating debate about military interoperability, industrial sovereignty and ethics.


The EU, NATO and Artificial Intelligence: new possibilities for cooperation?

Hosted by the Finnish Permanent Representation to the EU, the conference welcomed high-level speakers from the European Defence Agency, European External Action Service, the Finnish Ministry of Defence, the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the German Council on Foreign Relations, the Latvian Ministry of Defence and NATO. The conference allowed EU and NATO officials, government representatives, industry and think tankers to exchange views on how best the EU and NATO can understand the development of AI in the field of defence. Some 90 people attended the event. Speakers touched upon the ways in which the disruptive potential of AI could affect how the two organisations think about defence, and what room exists for closer cooperation between the EU and NATO in the future.

Speaking last month at the Smart City Expo World Congress opening ceremony in Spain, Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan announced that Singapore has invested more than $500 million to advance the field of AI research and enterprise. The island-state aims to be a trailblazer in driving AI as a technology for transformation. In fact, the Smart Nation Digital Government Office (SNDGO) has been established with the ambitious goal of deploying scalable, impactful AI solutions that will transform Singapore's economy and societies.


40 Corporations Working On Autonomous Vehicles

Beyond trendy names like Tesla and Alphabet chasing self-driving cars, a host of auto brands and other tech heavyweights are also investing in autonomous R&D. Private companies working in auto tech are attracting record levels of deals and funding, with autonomous driving startups leading the charge. Along with early-stage startups, VCs, and other investors, large corporations are also angling to get a slice of the self-driving pie. They are a diverse group of players, ranging from automotive industry stalwarts to leading technology brands and telecommunications companies. Companies working on industrial autonomous vehicles were not included in this analysis. Over the last decade, Amazon has spent billions of dollars working on finding ever-better solutions to the last-mile problem in delivery. It's built its own fleet of cargo jets, explored delivery by drone in the form of "Prime Air," and more. More recently, an increasing percentage of that investment has been directed toward autonomous vehicle technology. In February 2019, Amazon invested in Aurora Innovation, an autonomous tech startup run by former executives from two other firms with strong ties to self-driving technology: Google and Tesla. "Autonomous technology has the potential to help make the jobs of our employees and partners safer and more productive, whether it's in a fulfillment center or on the road, and we're excited about the possibilities." The Aurora investment isn't the only autonomous technology play that Amazon is pursuing. In January 2019, the company introduced the Amazon Scout, a six-wheeled electric-powered delivery robot.

SpaceX Delivers 'Mighty Mice,' Pest-Killing Worms and a Smart Robot to International Space Station

SpaceX made an early holiday delivery to the International Space Station on Sunday, bringing muscle-bound "mighty mice," pest-killing worms and a smart, empathetic robot. The station commander, Italy's Luca Parmitano, used a large robot arm to grab onto the Dragon three days after its launch from Cape Canaveral. The two spacecraft soared 260 miles (420 kilometers) above the South Pacific at the time of capture. "Whenever we welcome a new vehicle on board, we take on board also a little bit of the soul of everybody that contributed to the project, so welcome on board," Parmitano told Mission Control. It marks the third visit for this recycled Dragon.
