Evolving Role of Artificial Intelligence in Radiological Imaging

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing the following public workshop entitled "Evolving Role of Artificial Intelligence in Radiological Imaging." The intent of this public workshop is to discuss emerging applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in radiological imaging including AI devices intended to automate the diagnostic radiology workflow as well as guided image acquisition. The purpose of the workshop is to work with interested stakeholders to identify the benefits and risks associated with use of AI in radiological imaging. We also plan to discuss best practices for the validation of AI-automated radiological imaging software and image acquisition devices. Validation of device performance with respect to the intended use is critical to assess safety and effectiveness.

Concerns raised over Indian government's plan for face recognition

INDIA'S government wants to build one of the largest facial recognition systems in the world. But critics warn it could be a blow to citizens' rights. The country's National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has invited bids to develop a nationwide facial recognition system that can automatically identify people from CCTV feeds and images uploaded through a mobile app. The NCRB says it will help police catch criminals, find missing people and identify dead bodies. The technology works by scanning the structure of people's faces and comparing the results โ€ฆ


CMU becomes go-to place for machine learning in catalysis research

Many a middle school science teacher has dripped a few drops of potassium iodide into hydrogen peroxide and watched the delight of their students as a volcano of foam erupted from the container. This experiment is often the way young people first learn about catalysts as something that that can induce a chemical reaction. But catalysts can make more than foam. As those young people grow into young scientists, they learn that catalysis--the acceleration of a chemical reaction by a catalyst--is a key process in the creation of just about everything. From the plastics that make up our medical equipment, to the gasoline in our cars, to the paint that colors our homes--none of these could exist without catalysts.

China's Privacy Challenges with AI and Mobile Apps

China's rapidly growing tech economy is now facing some serious questions about the trade-offs involved in the widespread adoption of emerging technologies such as AI. In fact, China's Ministry of Science and Technology is now leading the debate over the relative benefits and drawbacks of artificial intelligence, with at least some recognition that certain AI applications โ€“ such as facial recognition technology โ€“ might have some very negative implications for personal privacy. At the same time, other regulatory authorities within China โ€“ including the Cyberspace Administration of China โ€“ are now taking a closer look at how popular consumer technologies (including mobile apps) might also be going too far when it comes to collecting, using and sharing user data. For now, the most high-profile emerging technology within China is artificial intelligence (AI), which is being embraced much more quickly and widely than in the West. For example, Chinese law enforcement authorities are using AI-powered facial recognition technologies to crack down on crime and terrorism, while urban planners and other policymakers are embracing AI as a way to come up with more efficient healthcare, education and transportation solutions.


Singapore approves AI for vascular ultrasound scans ZDNet

Singapore's Health Sciences Authority has approved the use of an artificial intelligence-powered (AI) software for the automated analysis and reporting of vascular ultrasound scans. Developed by See-Mode Technologies, the application taps deep learning, text recognition, and signal processing technologies with the aim of helping clinicians interpret such images -- a task that typically is performed manually, time-consuming, and error-prone. Such scans, used for patients with cardiovascular or heart diseases, are commonly analysed by a sonographer or radiologist who has to manually review between 50 and 150 images for each patient, according to See-Mode. No system is infallible and cybersecurity breaches are inevitable, but Singapore needs to do better in mitigating the risks and following through on its pledge to safeguard citizen data. "The end result is a hand-written, paper-based template filled with drawings, numbers, and measurements, which can take as long as 20 minutes per patient for severe cases," it said in a statement Tuesday.


CECIMO gets a new President

The CECIMO General Assembly elected Dr Hans-Martin Schneeberger as President of CECIMO for a period of two years on 5 December 2019 in Brussels. His term will focus on the setting of global standards and the uptake of Artificial Intelligence. Succeeding in this role Dr Roland Feichtl, Dr Hans-Martin Schneeberger has been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the European Association that represents more than a third of the world machine tool (MT) production. In a highly competitive and uncertain global market, CECIMO and its members have to convey, to both the national and European institutions, the clear message that industry is vital for the future development of Europe. "The machine tool sector" he said "can contribute to the health of the European industry by shaping the next EU regulatory initiatives and policies".


Public opinion lessons for AI regulation

An overwhelming majority of the American public believes that artificial intelligence (AI) should be carefully managed. Nevertheless, as the three case studies in this brief show, the public does not agree on the proper regulation of AI applications. Indeed, population-level support of an AI application may belie opposition by some subpopulations. Many AI applications, such as facial recognition technology, could cause disparate harm to already vulnerable subgroups, particularly ethnic minorities and low-income individuals. In addition, partisan divisions are likely to prevent government regulation of AI applications that could be used to influence electoral politics.
