There is an extraordinary amount of data being generated around the world on a daily basis. The task of collecting relevant information, organizing it, and piecing it together in a way that tells a story seems like an overwhelming and nearly impossible task. Yet, this is the monumental task of intelligence analysts. Thankfully, incredible technological advancements, including machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), are assisting analysts in their efforts to collect and categorize massive amounts of data. Technology is evolving at a rapid pace, and analysts must always be learning how to apply machine-learning technology to help them better understand and solve complex problems.

This week, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and IBM CEO Ginni Rometty called for AI to get its own regulation system. Alphabet CEO Pichai stated that it was "too important not to", going on to expand by explaining that sectors within AI technology, such as autonomous cars and healthtech, needed their own sets of rules. IBM CEO Rometty joined the discussion with the idea of'precision regulation', stating that it is not the technology itself, but how it is used that should be regulated, using facial recognition as an example of technology that can harm people's privacy as well as having its benefits, such as catching criminals. Without it, the technology won't take the world by storm These announcements have come in spite of recent setbacks in the sphere; just last week it was revealed that the European Commission were considering a five year ban on facial recognition, and Google's last attempt to assemble an AI ethics board lasted under two weeks due to controversy over who was appointed.

One of the most powerful men in IT, Sundar Pichai, has backed regulations for artificial intelligence. While Pichai isn't the first big tech executive to say so publicly, his voice matters, given that Google is arguably the world's largest AI Company. Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk has been vocal about the need for regulating AI several times in the past. Musk even said that "by the time we are reactive in AI regulation, it's too late". Microsoft president Brad Smith is another prominent person in tech who has called for regulation of AI.


Meet Vyommitra! India's legless 'female' robot that will be sent to space

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is taking one giant leap for robot-kind. The space agency is sending the first half-humanoid along with an unmanned mission into space set for December. Named Vyommitra, the legless'female' robot speaks two languages, recognizes humans and answers questions like a living person. The purpose of the spacefaring machine is to conduct experiments before India launches its first manned mission to space in 2022. Scientists showed Vyommitra off a media event on Wednesday where she greeted spectators with'Hi, I'm Vyommitra the first prototype of half humanoid,' India Today reported.


Towards a Framework for Certification of Reliable Autonomous Systems

The capability and spread of such systems have reached the point where they are beginning to touch much of everyday life. However, regulators grapple with how to deal with autonomous systems, for example how could we certify an Unmanned Aerial System for autonomous use in civilian airspace? We here analyse what is needed in order to provide verified reliable behaviour of an autonomous system, analyse what can be done as the state-of-the-art in automated verification, and propose a roadmap towards developing regulatory guidelines, including articulating challenges to researchers, to engineers, and to regulators. Case studies in seven distinct domains illustrate the article. Former PPPL intern honored for outstanding machine learning poster

The American Physical Society (APS) has recognized a summer intern at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) for producing an outstanding research poster at the world-wide APS Division of Plasma Physics (DPP) gathering last October. The student, Marco Miller, a senior at Columbia University majoring in applied physics, used machine learning to accelerate a leading PPPL computer code known as XGC as a participant in the DOE's Summer Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program in 2019. The modifications, which will enable the XGC code to calculate more quickly, could help expand the physics included in detailed simulations of the plasma that fuels fusion reactions. The poster, prepared under the mentorship of PPPL physicist Michael Churchill, showed how Miller used machine learning techniques in his research and was presented at the APS-DPP conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. "It felt great to get the award," Miller said.

EU tech regulator backs UK plans for digital tax, despite Trump threats

The European Union's leading tech regulator has thrown her weight behind the British government's plans to press ahead with a digital tax despite threats from Donald Trump. Margrethe Vestager, the EU competition commissioner recently promoted to take charge of Europe's digital policy as well, said she was a "strong supporter" of national digital taxes in order to advance the chances of an international agreement. She said the EU would revive plans for a digital tax within a year if international efforts to find a solution failed. "I think it is very important that we keep up the momentum. Because of this very fundamental injustice that most people and businesses pay their taxes and they are competing with businesses who create value but do not pay taxes," she said in an interview with the Guardian and other European newspapers.


Arkansas' First AI and Machine Learning Accelerator to Launch with Cohort of 14 Companies -- Startup Junkie

Cohort of 14 U.S. and international startups to relocate to Bentonville for 12 weeks PRESS RELEASE โ€“ The first-ever Arkansas-based artificial intelligence and machine learning accelerator will launch later this month, with the goal of helping a cohort of startups within these fields connect to regional enterprise partners. The Fuel Accelerator, in its second iteration, will provide regular, hands-on education and workshops to a cohort of 14 companies from across the United States, Europe and Asia. These 14 companies will make their way to Northwest Arkansas, at the foot of the Ozark Mountains, for a 12-week, enterprise-ready accelerator that will provide them with access to other startup founders, industry experts, institutions of higher education, and public policy officials. Fuel launched in late 2018 with eight startups participating in a supply chain-focused, 16-week program. The program helped its first cohort nurture relationships with key Fortune 500 companies through feedback sessions, training, pilots and demos.


VA's AI Tech Sprint yields a tool for matching patients with clinical trials, and more - FedScoop

A group of high school students was one of the top teams to emerge from the recent AI Tech Sprint by the Department of Veterans Affairs, delivering a web application that could help match cancer patients to clinical trials. The three students from Northern Virginia entered their work in a competition that included software companies like Oracle Healthcare and MyCancerDB. Digital consulting company Composite App took the $20,000 first place prize for its solution -- a tool for helping patients stay on track with their care plan -- but the clinical trials team got an honorable mention. The tech sprint was organized by the VA's new AI institute, and it focused on partnering with outside organizations and companies interested in applying artificial intelligence tools and techniques to VA data. The high school team's members -- Shreeja Kikkisetti, Ethan Ocasio and Neeyanth Kopparapu -- met as part of the Northern Virginia-based nonprofit Girls Computing League. They were unique in a competition otherwise dominated by adult professionals from software and health care companies.
