Deep Instinct nabs $43M for a deep-learning cybersecurity solution that can suss an attack before it happens – TechCrunch

The worlds of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity have become deeply entwined in recent years, as organizations work to keep up with -- and ideally block -- increasingly sophisticated malicious hackers. Today, a startup that's built a deep learning solution that it claims can both identify and stop even viruses that have yet to be identified has raised a large round of funding from some big strategic partners. Deep Instinct, which uses deep learning both to learn how to identify and stop known viruses and other hacking techniques, as well as to be able to identify completely new approaches that have not been identified before, has raised $43 million in a Series C. The funding is being led by Millennium New Horizons, with Unbound (a London-based investment firm founded by Shravin Mittal), LG and Nvidia all participating. The investment brings the total raised by Deep Instinct to $100 million, with HP and Samsung among its previous backers. The tech companies are all strategics, in that (as in the case of HP) they bundle and resell Deep Instinct's solutions, or use them directly in their own services. The Israeli-based company is not disclosing valuation, but notably, it is already profitable.

When the Department of Energy's (DOE) Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Camera at the National Science Foundation's Vera Rubin Observatory turns on in 2022, it will take photos of 37 billion galaxies and stars over the course of a decade. The output from this huge telescope will swamp researchers with data. In those 10 years, the LSST Camera will take 2,000 photos for each patch of the Southern Sky it covers.


UN will use AI to learn what people want from peace deals

The UN will help people in warzones to influence peace deals through an AI conversation tool they can access through their smartphones. The system will be launched within the next year, the Financial Times reports. The technology was developed by UN officials alongside a startup called Remesh, which produces a tool that creates online conversations with up to 1,000 participants. Their thoughts are analyzed in real-time through polls and open-ended questions to provide insights at scale. The product is typically used for market research and employee engagement.

The U.S. Navy's New Robo-Boat Has No People, But It Does Have a Very Big Gun

One of the most important but generally overlooked missions of the U.S. Navy is port security. While incidents in peacetime are generally rare, the 2000 terrorist attack on the destroyer USS Cole remains a real danger. Now the Navy is experimenting with using one of its newest unmanned boats as a way to protect warships sitting pierside from attack. In October 2000, the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole was refueling at the port of Aden in Yemen when it came under attack by Al Qaeda terrorists. A small boat loaded with explosives sidled up to the 10,000 ton destroyer and exploded, killing 17 U.S. Navy sailors and injuring 39.


ACT-IAC Releases New Artificial Intelligence Playbook

The American Council for Technology and Industry Advisory Council (ACT-IAC), the premier public-private partnership dedicated to advancing government through the application of information technology, officially announced the release of the "Artificial Intelligence (AI) Playbook for the U.S. Federal Government." It was produced through a collaborative, volunteer effort by a working group of 133 leaders from government and industry plus academia and associations, hosted by the ACT-IAC Emerging Technology Community of Interest (COI). "The AI Playbook is designed to help the United States Federal Government achieve successful outcomes and reduce risk in its understanding and application of AI technologies," said David Wennergren, CEO of ACT-IAC, "and this important work directly supports the President's Management Agenda (PMA), Cross Agency Priority (CAP) Goal 6 – Shifting from Low-Value to High-Value Work." The Playbook also follows the General Service Administration's Office of Government-wide Policy Modernization and Migration Management (M3) framework used for Shared Services. AI has the power to accelerate government services in fields as diverse as medical research and disaster recovery to help save lives and improve quality of service in impactful ways.
