AI (Artificial Intelligence) has a long history, going back to the 1950s when the computer industry started. It's interesting to note that much of the innovation came from government programs, not private industry. This was all about how to leverage technologies to fight the Cold War and put a man on the moon. The impact of these program would certainly be far-reaching. They would lead to the creation of the Internet and the PC revolution.
Satellite images and artificial intelligence used in search for Vietnam War-era unexploded bombs

Researchers at Ohio State University are using satellite images and sophisticated artificial intelligence technology to search for unexploded bombs from the Vietnam War. The technology already has been used to survey Vietnam War-era bomb craters in Cambodia. "The new method increased true bomb crater detection by more than 160 percent over standard methods," researchers explain in a statement. "The model, combined with declassified U.S. military records, suggests that 44 to 50 percent of the bombs in the area studied may remain unexploded."

I chose artificial intelligence as my next topic, as it can be considered as one of the most known technologies, and people imagine it when they talk about the future. But the right question would be: What is artificial intelligence? Artificial intelligence is not something that just happened in 2015 and 2016. It's been around for a hundred years as an idea, but as a science, we started seeing developments from the 1950s. So, this is quite an old tech topic already, but because of the kinds of technology that we have access to today -- specifically, processing performance and storage -- we're starting to see significant leaps in AI development. When I started the course entitled, "Foundations of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0)," I got deeper into the topic of artificial intelligence. One of the differences between the third industrial revolution -- defined by the microchip and digitization -- and the fourth industrial revolution is the scope, velocity and breakthroughs in medicine and biology, as well as widespread use of artificial intelligence across our society. Thus, AI is not only a product of Industry 4.0 but also an impetus as to why the fourth industrial revolution is currently happening and will continue to do so.

I think there are two ways to understand AI: the first way is to try giving a quick definition of what it is, but the second is to also think about what it is not.
USC experts explore new technologies to combat COVID-19
In response to the coronavirus health crisis, USC researchers have made a hard pivot, adapting labs and lessons learned from treating other diseases to help check the virus and save lives. At their disposal are numerous technologies that give a human advantage, despite the fast-break spread of COVID-19 once it exited central China and spread across the globe. The disease has afflicted thousands of Californians and poses a serious risk to public health and the world economy. Tools such as supercomputers, software apps, virtual reality, big data and algorithms are now in play. They are using the tools to find ways to search and destroy coronavirus DNA, turn smartphones into personal protection devices and use people-friendly simulators to help cope with the crush of medical cases.
AI-based early warning system to monitor deepfakes, manipulated images
Researchers are utilising artificial intelligence (AI) to develop an early warning system that can identify manipulated images, deepfake videos and disinformation online in 2020 US election. The project is an effort to combat the rise of coordinated social media campaigns to incite violence, sew discord and threaten the integrity of democratic elections. According to the study, published in the journal Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the scalable, automated system uses content-based image retrieval and applies computer vision-based techniques to root out political memes from multiple social networks. "Memes are easy to create and even easier to share. When it comes to political memes, these can be used to help get out the vote, but they can also be used to spread inaccurate information and cause harm," said study researcher Tim Weninger, Associate Professor at the University of Notre Dame in the US.
Apple launches COVID-19 app and website
Apple launched a new app and website to inform the public about COVID-19. It includes a screening tool to help people figure out if they've caught the coronavirus, and the information is based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Apple says. The App was created in partnership with the CDC, the White House Coronavirus Task Force and FEMA "to make it easy for people across the country to get trusted information and guidance at a time when the U.S. is feeling the heavy burden of COVID-19," according to Apple. Both the app and website ask users to answer questions to help people figure out if they need to be tested. For instance, it asks if you have chest pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness, slurred speed or difficulty waking up.
Civic Innovation Corps -- Coding it Forward
Coding it Forward, in partnership with U.S. Special Operations Command, is piloting the Civic Innovation Corps--a new summer program for mission-driven data scientists and software engineers to create outsized impact in national security. We are looking for mission-driven data scientists and software engineers to spend their summers working alongside executive leadership within U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and the Department of Defense to support artificial intelligence and machine learning initiatives. The program will run 10 weeks, from June 1 to August 7, 2020. Interviews and offers will be made on a rolling basis--apply as soon as possible.

Amazon's Alexa updated to help respond to users who are concerned they may have novel coronavirus
Amazon's voice assistant, Alexa, can now help users who are worried about having been infected with novel coronavirus. According to the company, users can now query any device equipped with Alexa with phrases like'Alexa, what do I do if I think I have coronavirus?' and the assistant will begin to quiz them about their symptoms. The assistant will then provide users with information pulled from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in an effort to provide sound advice on what to do. Amazon's line of Alexa-enabled devices like the Echo (pictured) can now provide users guidance on what to do if they think they may have novel coronavirus As a part of the update, users can now also ask Alexa to'sing along' while they wash their hands to help them time the task for 20 seconds - the recommended amount of time for proper sanitation. That feature is currently available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, India, the UK, and the US and mirrors a similar feature rolled out by Google on its home assistants. The feature most closely mirrors one rolled out by Apple this week which updated its own voice assistant, Siri, to help provide users with guidance on coronavirus.
