Imagine a high-security complex protected by a facial recognition system powered by deep learning. The artificial intelligence algorithm has been tuned to unlock the doors for authorized personnel only, a convenient alternative to fumbling for your keys at every door. A stranger shows up, dons a bizarre set of spectacles, and all of a sudden, the facial recognition system mistakes him for the company's CEO and opens all the doors for him. By installing a backdoor in the deep learning algorithm, the malicious actor ironically gained access to the building through the front door.

But the robot's US$2-million price tag and negligible effect on cancer outcomes is sparking concern that it's crowding out more affordable treatments. There are more than 5,500 da Vinci robots globally, manufactured by California-based tech giant, Intuitive. The system is used in a range of surgical procedures, but its biggest impact has been in urology, where it has a market monopoly on robot-assisted radical prostatectomies (RARP), the removal of the prostate and surrounding tissues to treat localized cancer. Uptake in the United States, Europe, Australia, China and Japan for performing this procedure has been rapid.

The US military is set to use'corona-killing robots' equip with ultraviolet light (UV) to disinfect enclosed spaces. The four-wheeled autonomous robots would eliminate the need of human workers and complete the task in a matter of hours, instead of days. The technology is capable of radiating nearly 110 watts using a vertical UV mount that disinfects a surface two feet away in just over a minute. Although experts have not yet determined if UV kills the virus, the military said it is'employing double the wattage known to kill other coronavirus variants to ensure effectiveness,' Military.com The four-wheeled autonomous robots would eliminate the need of human workers and complete the task in a matter of hours, instead of days.
UPS and CVS set to deliver prescription medication by drone to a Florida retirement community
CVS and the United Parcel Service (UPS) will use drones to deliver prescription medication to residents in a Florida retirement community that is under lockdown due to the coronavirus. Starting on May 4th, those living in The Villages will receive their prescriptions from a Matternet's M2 drone. The drones will drop off orders at a designated spot outside of the community and an employee will transport the items to each person's home. The Villages, which is home to some 135,000 people, is the US's largest retirement community and has reported 171 cases and 12 deaths during the pandemic. Scott Price, UPS chief strategy and transformation officer, said: 'Our new drone delivery service will help CVS provide safe and efficient deliveries of medicines to this large retirement community, enabling residents to receive medications without leaving their homes.'
Tesla says cars can automatically stop for traffic lights
After testing on public roads, Tesla is rolling out a new feature of its partially automated driving system designed to spot stop signs and traffic signals. The update of the electric car company's cruise control and auto-steer systems is a step toward CEO Elon Musk's pledge to convert cars to fully self-driving vehicles later this year. But it also runs contrary to recommendations from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board that include limiting where Tesla's Autopilot driving system can operate because it has failed to spot and react to hazards in at least three fatal crashes. In a note sent to a group of Tesla owners who were picked to test the stop light and sign recognition feature, the company said it can be used with the Traffic Aware Cruise Control or Autosteer systems. The feature will slow the car whenever it detects a traffic light, including those that are green or blinking yellow.

The University of Oxford's Professor Rebecca Williams will deliver the closing keynote at this year's LegalEdCon, a virtual event, taking place on Thursday 14 May. Williams will use the slot to announce the findings of Oxford's'Unlocking the Potential of Artificial Intelligence for English Law' research project. She will focus in particular on the future of legal education in relation to changes to the legal job market resulting from implementation of lawtech, changes in the business models of law firms and developments in the law brought about by technology. Williams, along with fellow Oxford Uni akamdeics Ewart Keep and Václav Janeček, are responsible for the legal education stream of Oxford's UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)-funded AI for English Law project. The project as a whole brings together researchers from computer science, law, economics, education and the Saïd Business School to examine the potential and limitations of using AI in support of legal services.

Earlier this week, a pair of sleek, four-wheeled robots began trundling across the cracked pavement outside the Sleep Train Arena, the defunct former home of the Sacramento Kings, which the state of California has turned into a field Covid-19 hospital. Artificial intelligence will be used to power cyber attacks, warn security experts ZDNet
Intelligence and espionage services need to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) in order to protect national security as cyber criminals and hostile nation-states increasingly look to use the technology to launch attacks. The UK's intelligence and security agency GCHQ commissioned a study into the use of AI for national security purposes. It warns that while the emergence of AI create new opportunities for boosting national security and keeping members of the public safe, it also presents potential new challenges, including the risk of the same technology being deployed by attackers. "Malicious actors will undoubtedly seek to use AI to attack the UK, and it is likely that the most capable hostile state actors, which are not bound by an equivalent legal framework, are developing or have developed offensive AI-enabled capabilities," says the report from the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI). "In time, other threat actors, including cybercriminal groups, will also be able to take advantage of these same AI innovations".
