Libya's GNA launches counterattack after deadly rocket barrage
Libya's UN-supported government launched a counterattack on Sunday against a strategic military base used by renegade commander Khalifa Haftar to pound the capital Tripoli with rocket fire. The response came after a missile barrage damaged Tripoli's main airport and set fuel tanks and several aircraft ablaze, with at least six civilians killed in surrounding residential areas in the attacks on Saturday. Meanwhile, Turkey - the Government of National Accord's (GNA) main ally defending Tripoli against Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA) - threatened to step up its attacks against the eastern-based LNA, which has attempted to seize the capital for more than a year. "The forces of war criminal [Haftar] fired more than a hundred rockets and missiles at residential areas in the centre of the capital," the GNA said in a statement on Facebook. The airport was badly damaged and came under renewed rocket fire on Sunday morning, it said.

"Fraud decisioning strategies are more effective when the data gathered and analyzed includes high-quality evaluations of legitimate customers," the report states.

Four promising research projects received funding from the University of Alabama CyberSeed program, part of the UA Office for Research and Economic Development. The pilot seed-funding program promotes research across disciplines on campus while ensuring a stimulating and well-managed environment for high-quality research. The funded projects come from four major thrusts of the UA Cyber Initiative that include cybersecurity, critical infrastructure protection, applied machine learning and artificial intelligence, and cyberinfrastructure. "These projects are innovative in their approach to using cutting-edge solutions to tackle critical challenges," said Dr. Jeffrey Carver, professor of computer science and chair of the UA Cyber Initiative. One project will study cybersecurity of drones and develop strategies to mitigate potential attacks. Led by Dr. Mithat Kisacikoglu, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Dr. Travis Atkison, assistant professor of computer science, the research will produce a plan for the secure design of the power electronics in drones with potential for other applications.

Wei Li is vice president in the Software and Services Group and general manager of Machine Learning and Translation at Intel Corporation, responsible for several areas of software systems, including machine learning, binary translation, and emulation. His team works with industry and academia to enable the software ecosystem, and collaborates with Intel hardware teams designing future processor products. Since joining Intel in 1998, Wei has led teams that contributed to Intel data center, client/mobile, Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence businesses. He holds 11 U.S. patents, and has served as an associate editor for ACM Transactions on Programming Languages and Systems. Wei earned a Ph.D. in computer science from Cornell University, completed the Executive Accelerator Program at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and he taught computer science at Stanford University.

Could the same automated technologies cybersecurity professionals are increasingly using to protect their enterprises also fuel attacks against them? The research bears that out, according to a report my colleague Marc Bruce and I recently completed for the Swedish Defence Research Agency. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to analyze data and predict outcomes has been a boon for many industries, including the cybersecurity and defense industries. More and more, antivirus and cyberthreat intelligence systems are using machine learning to become more efficient. For example, both the US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the European Defence Agency (EDA) are seeking to integrate AI technologies into their cyberdefense response capabilities.

I'm pleased to announce the results of our open-source Coronavirus Drug Discovery Competition! In just 2 weeks, hundreds of developers from around the world signed up to join the fight against the novel coronavirus, using publicly available datasets and algorithms to come up with relevant solutions. The top 3 submissions, winning $3500 in prizes, stood out from the rest in terms of their algorithmic and reporting quality. In this episode, I'm going to announce each of their backgrounds, as well as dive into the various machine learning techniques they used to predict a suitable treatment for Coronavirus. The top submission identified a compound called Remdesivir as the the most promising treatment for COVID-2019, due to its high scoring inhibitory potential when docked against the Coronavirus main Protease.
South Korea to Make 5G and AI Centerpieces of 'Korean New Deal'
South Korea will make artificial intelligence and wireless communications centerpieces of what it is touting as a "New Deal" to create jobs and boost growth after the coronavirus pandemic subsides. The government, in a statement Thursday, said it will promote AI and fifth-generation wireless technology to support the economy once the virus is brought under control. The statement said funding would come from a third emergency budget being drafted now and from annual budgets through 2022, but didn't specify the amount. Korea's first two extra budgets already amount to biggest sum in decades President Moon Jae-in, after last month's big election victory, said his government would pursue large-scale state projects to boost jobs and innovation in the post-virus era. He compared his vision to the New Deal launched by President Franklin Roosevelt in the 1930s to help the U.S. recover from the Great Depression.
