An online app called Amica is now using artificial intelligence to help separating couples make parenting arrangements and divide their assets. For many people, the coronavirus pandemic has put even the strongest of relationships to the test. A May survey conducted by Relationships Australia found 42% of 739 respondents experienced a negative change in their relationship with their partner under lockdown restrictions. There has also been a surge in the number of couples seeking separation advice. The Australian government has backed the use of Amica for those in such circumstances.

Hundreds of illegal Chinese fishing vessels spotted near North Korea
Satellite imaging has revealed hundreds of vessels from China fishing off the coast of North Korea, violating UN resolutions prohibiting such activity in the largest known case of vessels from one country operating unlawfully in another country's waters. More than 800 vessels were seen in 2019, say researchers at the non-profit Global Fishing Watch, who traced the boats to Chinese ports and waters. A similar number were seen in 2017 and 2018. They estimate that the vessels, about a third of China's long-range fishing fleet, caught more than 160,000 tonnes of flying squid, rivalling the Japanese and South Korean total. Stocks of the squid, the main commercially fished species in the area, have declined dramatically in recent years.
AI system detects posts by foreign 'trolls' on Facebook and Twitter
Foreign manipulation campaigns on social media can be spotted by looking at features such as the timing and length of posts, and the URLs they contain, researchers have found. From the 2016 US presidential election to Brexit, a growing number of major political events are thought to have been targeted by foreign activity on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Reddit. Now researchers say they have developed an automated machine learning system – a type of artificial intelligence – that can spot such posts, based on their content. "We can use machine learning to automatically identify the content of troll postings and track an online information operation without human intervention," said Dr Meysam Alizadeh of Princeton University, co-author of the research. The team say the approach differs from simply detecting bots, which they say is important since such campaigns often include posts by humans.
DARPA-Northrop Partnership Works on Robotic GEO Satellite Maintenance Platform – IAM Network
RSGS mission The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency aims to complete a payload technology for its Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites program this year in collaboration with a Northrop Grumman subsidiary and the Naval Research Laboratory. DARPA is responsible for supplying the RSGS payload that will fly on commercial robotic servicing spacecraft being developed by SpaceLogistics to support the mission targeted for a 2023 launch, the agency said Friday. SpaceLogistics was selected in March to build the mission robotic vehicle bus and support technology transition efforts under the program. The agency expects NRL to complete the integration of robotic arms with the payload structure and commence environmental tests of the hardware during 2021. "First, the RSGS spacecraft will fly around the client spacecraft to observe from a distance," said Joseph Parrish, a program manager DARPA's Tactical Technology Office.

The potential for the Internet of Things to lead to distortion in market competition is troubling European Union lawmakers who have today kicked off a sectoral inquiry. They're aiming to gather data from hundreds of companies operating in the smart home and connected device space -- via some 400 questionnaires, sent to companies big and small across Europe, Asia and the US -- using the intel gleaned to feed a public consultation slated for early next year when the Commission will also publish a preliminary report. In a statement on the launch of the sectoral inquiry today, the European Union's competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, said the risks to competition and open markets linked to the data collection capabilities of connected devices and voice assistants are clear. The aim of the exercise is therefore to get ahead of any data-fuelled competition risks in the space before they lead to irreversible market distortion. "One of the key issues here is data. Voice assistants and smart devices can collect a vast amount of data about our habits. And there's a risk that big companies could misuse the data collected through such devices, to cement their position in the market against the challenges of competition. They might even use their knowledge of how we access other services to enter the market for those services and take it over," said Vestager.
Here's one way to make daily covid-19 testing feasible on a mass scale
It's impossible to contain covid-19 without knowing who's infected: until a safe and effective vaccine is widely available, stopping transmission is the name of the game. While testing capacity has increased, it's nowhere near what's needed to screen patients without symptoms, who account for nearly half of the virus's transmission. Our research points to a compelling opportunity for data science to effectively multiply today's testing capacity: if we combine machine learning with test pooling, large populations can be tested weekly or even daily, for as low as $3 to $5 per person per day. In other words, for the price per test of a cup of coffee, governments can safely reopen the economy and halt ongoing covid-19 transmission--all without building new labs and without new drugs or vaccines. Most people get tested for the coronavirus because they experienced symptoms, or came in close contact with someone who did.
Sea Machines raises $15 million for autonomous ship navigation
Autonomous vessel software and systems provider Sea Machines Robotics today closed a $15 million funding round to accelerate deployment of its technologies in the unmanned naval boat and ship market. Sea Machines boldly claims this is one of the largest rounds for a tech company tackling marine and maritime use cases. Self-steering vessels aren't a new idea -- but they are gaining steam. Earlier this year, IBM and Promare -- a U.K.-based marine research and exploration charity -- trialed a prototype of an AI-powered maritime navigation system ahead of a September 6th venture to send a ship across the Atlantic Ocean. In Norway, a crewless cargo ship called the Yara Birkeland is expected to go into commercial operation later in 2020.

A scarily realistic deepfake video shows what it would have looked like if President Richard Nixon was forced to deliver a sombre address to the world had the Apollo 11 mission ended in disaster. It is well-known that the American president had two speeches prepared, one in case of a safe landing and one in the event that tragedy struck. Fortuitously, the landing on July 20 1969 by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin was a resounding success, rendering the latter redundant. However, experts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created an entirely artificial video showing what it may have looked and sounded like. It is part of a project called'Moon Disaster' and is designed to draw attention to the risk deepfakes pose and how they can manipulate people and spread fake news.
