Popular Chinese-Made Drone Is Found to Have Security Weakness
Cybersecurity researchers revealed on Thursday a newfound vulnerability in an app that controls the world's most popular consumer drones, threatening to intensify the growing tensions between China and the United States. In two reports, the researchers contended that an app on Google's Android operating system that powers drones made by China-based Da Jiang Innovations, or DJI, collects large amounts of personal information that could be exploited by the Beijing government. The world's largest maker of commercial drones, DJI has found itself increasingly in the cross hairs of the United States government, as have other successful Chinese companies. The Pentagon has banned the use of its drones, and in January the Interior Department decided to continue grounding its fleet of the company's drones over security fears. DJI said the decision was about politics, not software vulnerabilities.

Autonomous vessel software and systems provider Sea Machines Robotics today closed a $15 million funding round to accelerate deployment of its technologies in the unmanned naval boat and ship market. Sea Machines boldly claims this is one of the largest rounds for a tech company tackling marine and maritime use cases. Self-steering vessels aren't a new idea -- but they are gaining steam. Earlier this year, IBM and Promare -- a U.K.-based marine research and exploration charity -- trialed a prototype of an AI-powered maritime navigation system ahead of a September 6th venture to send a ship across the Atlantic Ocean. In Norway, a crewless cargo ship called the Yara Birkeland is expected to go into commercial operation later in 2020.
IT Minister emphasises need for building trustworthy Artificial Intelligence systems
Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that India will soon put in place a robust personal data protection law. He said, it will not only address the data privacy related concerns of citizens but also ensure availability of data for innovation and economic development. Prasad said, in view of these concerns, the digital platforms having presence in many countries must become trustworthy, safe and secure. He was speaking at the virtual meeting of G-20 Digital Economy Ministers on Wednesday, hosted by Saudi Arabia which is holding the presidency of G-20. Prasad told the Ministers of the G-20 countries that it is time to acknowledge that digital platforms anywhere in the world have to be responsive and accountable towards the sovereign concerns of countries including defence, privacy and security of citizens.
New York lawmakers agree to pause use of facial recognition in schools
New York lawmakers have passed a moratorium that would ban the use of facial recognition in schools until 2022. Their decision comes a month after the New York Civil Liberties Union sued the State Education Department for approving Lockport City School District's facial recognition system. If you'll recall, Lockport started testing a facial and object recognition technology called "Aegis" in June 2019, and the district officially activated it in January this year. The bill mandating the moratorium still needs Governor Cuomo's approval, but once it's official, the New York education department will also be compelled to study and craft regulation around the technology's use. Education Policy Center deputy director Stephanie Coyle issued a statement for the NYCLU, explaining how facial recognition can affect Black and Brown students' experiences.

A teenager in New South Wales recently died after a fatal shark bite, adding to four other unprovoked shark-related deaths this year. These tragic events send shockwaves through the community and re-ignite our fear of sharks. They also fuel the debate around the best way to keep people safe in the water while minimising impacts on marine wildlife. This was the aim of a five-year trial of shark-mitigation technology--the Shark Management Strategy โ which finished recently. The NSW government created this initiative in response to an unprecedented spike in shark bites in 2015, particularly on the north coast of NSW.
New York bans use of facial recognition in schools statewide
The New York legislature today passed a moratorium banning the use of facial recognition and other forms of biometric identification in schools until 2022. The bill, which has yet to be signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, comes in response to the planned launch of facial recognition by the Lockport City School District and appears to be the first in the nation to explicitly regulate the use of the technology in schools. In January, Lockport Schools became one of the only U.S. school districts to adopt facial recognition in all of its K-12 buildings, which serve about 5,000 students. Proponents argued the $1.4 million system could keep students safe by enforcing watchlists and sending alerts when it detected someone dangerous (or otherwise unwanted). But critics said it could be used to surveil students and build a database of sensitive information about people's faces, which the school district then might struggle to keep secure.

A primary indicator of success in the fight against COVID-19 is avoiding stress on critical care infrastructure and services (CCIS). However, CCIS will likely remain stressed until sustained herd immunity is built, either in due course or by vaccination on mass scale. There are also secondary considerations for success: mitigating economic damage; curbing the spread of misinformation, improving morale, and preserving a sense of control; building global trust for diplomacy, trade and travel; and restoring reliability and normalcy to day-to-day life, among others. We envision technology plays a pivotal role. Here, we focus on the effective use of readily available technology to improve the primary and secondary success criteria for the fight against SARS-CoV-2. In a multifaceted technology approach, in this Part I, we start with effective technology use for remote patient monitoring (RPM) of COVID-19 with the following objectives: 1. Deploying readily available technology for continuous real-time remote monitoring of patient vitals with the help of biosensors on a large scale.
