Artificial Intelligence Applications in Cardiology
The No. 1 overarching hot topic at all the medical conferences over the past couple years has been artificial intelligence (AI). What was once science fiction or far-fetched research projects are now starting to gain U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) market clearance. Some AI elements are already being used without clinicians knowing it, being integrated into the backend of cardiology imaging systems and IT reporting systems to help speed workflow. However, beyond the hype of AI, there are practical concerns, including the need for validation, clinical evidence showing AI helps patient care, and the payment system based on how medicine did things 20-30 years ago needs to change. "We have a huge gap between all this AI investment and how we actually take care of patients. We need to integrate it into our care, because if it is not part of how we take care of patients, this isn't going to work," explained John Rumsfeld, M.D., Ph.D., FACC, American College Cardiology (ACC) chief innovation officer, and professor of medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
ORNL's New AI Platform Assesses 3D Printed Parts in Real-Time - 3DPrint.com
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is behind the development of a new type of artificial intelligence (AI) software called Peregrine, meant to improve the quality of functional parts being produced via powder bed 3D printers. Peregrine requires no "expensive characterization equipment," yet possesses the ability to evaluate parts during manufacturing. "Capturing that information creates a digital'clone' for each part, providing a trove of data from the raw material to the operational component," said Vincent Paquit, leader of advanced manufacturing data analytics research as part of ORNL's Imaging, Signals and Machine Learning group. "We then use that data to qualify the part and to inform future builds across multiple part geometries and with multiple materials, achieving new levels of automation and manufacturing quality assurance." 'Catastrophe' or 'new era'? Mail shake-up at L.A. public housing complex alarms residents
Renters at the Mar Vista Gardens public housing complex were skeptical as Roderick Strong laid out the plan: Instead of getting mail delivered to their doors, residents would pick it up at new, centralized spots around the 43-acre community in Del Rey, a Los Angeles neighborhood west of Culver City. Strong, the Culver City Post Office postmaster, called the new system "the launch of a new era." He said the shift was being considered to ensure the safety of mail carriers who had been menaced by dog bites and other threats. Few tenants seemed swayed, however, as they listened by phone and the web during a remote meeting on a recent weekday. Daisy Vega, president of the resident advisory council, asked Strong why such a change was being planned for their housing complex and not for "the other side of town."

RAF trials a ยฃ300,000 virtual reality simulation system to help make combat training more realistic
A virtual reality simulation system costing ยฃ300,000 is being trialled by the Royal Air Force (RAF) in an effort to make combat training more immersive and realistic. The'first-person shooter' -style combat game is being developed under contract with the UK Ministry of Defence by the veteran-run software company SimCentric. The simulation software -- dubbed'SAF-TAC' -- is built on top of Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4, which also powers the popular video games Fortnite and Borderlands 3. SAF-TAC features bespoke training scenarios, high-definition surround sound, high-fidelity graphics, haptic feedback and intuitive gesture-based controls. SAF-TAC will also be put through tests this year with members of the British Army and the Royal Marines, alongside the air force. It is intended that the virtual simulator will become a routine part of the armed forces' wider training programme to support and enhance real-life exercises.

Microsoft, Energy Department To Develop Disaster-Response AI Tools - Slashdot
The U.S. Department of Energy and Microsoft on Tuesday announced a partnership to develop artificial-intelligence tools aimed at helping first-responders better react to fast-changing natural events, such as floods and wildfires. From a report: "There are just so many technologies where we can solve some of the toughest problems, in a moment where we're having an explosion of wildfires and floods and some really major natural disasters," said Cheryl Ingstad, director of the Energy Department's Artificial Intelligence and Technology Office. "And we think we can bring AI to bear here and help save lives." The First Five Consortium, a nod to the importance of the first five minutes in responding to a natural disaster, aims to build between 10 and 30 different AI-powered systems. Microsoft will provide technological resources, including its Azure cloud for AI model training and inference.

The U.S. federal government will spend close to $1 billion in artificial intelligence by 2023, according to market researcher IDC. This investment has more than tripled since 2018, showing how important AI is becoming as government agencies develop plans to modernize and automate their business processes. According to new research from Accenture--The Coming Federal Productivity Boom--federal agencies are poised to transform this investment into $364 billion of added productivity by 2028. Under more intensive investment forecasts, these productivity gains could reach $532 billion by the same year. At that point, AI could be applied to tasks that consume 30% of the average federal worker's time.

An institutional statement describes expected actions for actors within the presence or absence of particular constraints, or parameterizes features of an institutional system. Institutional statements convey information that contextualizes their applicability. They vary in prescriptiveness and force, as reflected by the presence of information that more or less strongly compels behavior and by the presence of information that specifies payoffs for compliance, or noncompliance, with statements instructions. Varying in the inclusion of these various kinds of information, institutional statements typically take two functional forms: constitutive and regulative. Constitutive statements constitute features of a system (e.g., actor positions and roles, processes, venues, etc). Regulative statements describe actions linked to specific actors within certain contextual parameters. According to the IG 2.0, institutional statements are commonly comprised of a set of syntactic components, with individual components associating with unique information, and which combine to convey a statement's institutional meaning. Regulative statements are composed of some or all of the following components with the corresponding syntactic labels: (i) an Actor, referred to as an Attribute; (ii) action associated with actor, referred to as an Aim; (iii) action context, referred to as Context; (iv) a receiver of action, referred to as an Object; (v) a prescriptive operator that describes how strongly an action is compelled or restrained, referred to as a Deontic; and (vi) an incentive linked to action, referred to as an Or else.
