MRI Scans Will Be Faster Than Before, Thanks To Artificial Intelligence
MRI scanners take time to carry out a scan. Clinicians spend up to an hour gathering sufficient data for a diagnostic MRI examination, which eats into a hospital's demanding schedule. To make the scanning process quicker for the patients, Facebook AI and NYU Langone Health announced a major research milestone that could significantly improve the patient experience, expand access to MRIs, and potentially enable new use-cases for MRIs. This study was published in the American Journal of Roentgenology. The radiologists who were tasked with reviewing AI-generated and traditional MRI images, could not tell which were created using the new method.

Heron Systems fielded an artificial intelligence system that managed Thursday to not only outgun a top current U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and weapons school graduate, but to score a flawless victory against its human opponent, winning all five dogfighting engagements in the culmination of a two-year Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency competition. "It's a giant leap," said Lt. Col. Justin "Glock" Mock, another weapons school graduate who also co-hosted the livestream. The DARPA program, known as the AlphaDogfight Trials, was designed to "demonstrate the feasibility of developing effective, intelligent autonomous agents capable of defeating adversary aircraft in a dogfight." In other words, if this were the movie Top Gun, Maverick and Goose would have just been smoked by an unmanned drone in head-to-head combat, five times in a row. Perhaps most impressive is the timeline under which teams rapidly developed their systems.
U.S. faces back-to-school laptop shortage amid coronavirus
Schools across the United States are facing shortages and long delays, of up to several months, in getting this year's most crucial back-to-school supplies: the laptops and other equipment needed for online learning, an Associated Press investigation has found. The world's three biggest computer companies, Lenovo, HP and Dell, have told school districts they have a shortage of nearly 5 million laptops, in some cases exacerbated by Trump administration sanctions on Chinese suppliers, according to interviews with over two dozen U.S. schools, districts in 15 states, suppliers, computer companies and industry analysts. As the school year begins virtually in many places because of the coronavirus, educators nationwide worry that computer shortfalls will compound the inequities -- and the headaches for students, families and teachers. "This is going to be like asking an artist to paint a picture without paint. You can't have a kid do distance learning without a computer," said Tom Baumgarten, superintendent of the Morongo County School District in California's Mojave Desert, where all 8,000 students qualify for free lunch and most need computers for distance learning.

Artificial Intelligence could add $450-$500 billion to GDP by 2025: Nasscom
Pune: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data could add $450-$500 billion to India's GDP by 2025, industry body Nasscom said in a report. According to the'Unlock Value from Data and AI: The Indian Opportunity' report, this could in turn aid India's economic growth and recovery. Nasscom's action plan recommends focusing on five key areas -- strategy, data, technology stack, talent and execution. According to the report, if India acts quickly, it can become a leader in building a holistic data utilization and AI effort, especially as countries emerge from the pandemic and global economic slowdown. The action plan and report has been reviewed by industry leaders including N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons; Rishad Premji, Chairman, Wipro; UB Pravin Rao, Chairman, Nasscom and Anant Maheshwari, President, Microsoft India.
Army Researchers Dream New Self-Healing Material Will Lead to 'Terminator' Technology
U.S. Army researchers have teamed with Texas A&M University to create a new polymer material that can shape-shift and autonomously heal itself as part of a research effort to improve future unmanned air and robotic vehicles. In early research, the first-of-its-kind, 3D-printable epoxy-based material can respond to stimuli, and researchers hope it will one day have embedded intelligence allowing it to adapt to its environment without any external control, according to a news release from Army Combat Capabilities Development Command's (CCDC) Army Research Laboratory. "We want a system of materials to simultaneously provide structure, sensing and response," said Frank Gardea, an aerospace engineer and principal investigator for the effort, at the CCDC. Gardea envisions a future platform, suitable for air and ground missions, with the "reconfiguration characteristics of the T-1000 character in the Hollywood film, 'Terminator 2.'" The hit film featured a Terminator made of liquid-metal that could form its arms into stabbing weapons and heal itself after being shot with everything from a 12-gauge shotgun to a 40mm grenade launcher. So far, the material has responded to temperature, which researchers first selected because of its ease of use during laboratory testing.
DARPA Chip Effort Advances AI Hardware
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Electronics Resurgence Initiative (ERI) includes development efforts aimed at AI hardware components needed to provide the computational horsepower for accelerating the movement of big data used in emerging machine learning applications. "U.S. leadership in microelectronics is essential to U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence," Gilman Louie, a member of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI), told this week's virtual ERI conference. Maintaining the lead in AI hardware requires "technical feats only DARPA would attempt." In a series of reports to Congress, the commission has emphasized continued U.S. leadership in microelectronics as a way to "get AI right," said Louie, founder and former CEO of In-Q-Tel, the venture arm of the U.S. intelligence community. NSCAI, which is led by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, was created last year with a three-year mandate to advance AI, machine learning and associated technologies for U.S. national security.
AI Defeats Human Pilot in DARPA Organized Dogfight
It's official: The robots are taking over. But in a significant development on August 20, an artificial intelligence (AI) program managed to defeat a human F-16 pilot in simulated dogfights. The AI program, designed by tech firm Heron Systems, was pitched against the human pilot in an environment resembling an elaborate video game during the third and final event of the AlphaDogfight trials organized by U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Heron System's website notes that the program was based on deep reinforcement learning โ an AI technique that combines insights from behavioral psychology with how the human cortex is structured and functions โ along with unspecified innovations. The bested human operator, publicly known only by their callsign, "Banger," was reported to have been trained at the Weapons School at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.
