Fairness in the Eyes of the Data: Certifying Machine-Learning Models

We present a framework that allows to certify the fairness degree of a model based on an interactive and privacy-preserving test. The framework verifies any trained model, regardless of its training process and architecture. Thus, it allows us to evaluate any deep learning model on multiple fairness definitions empirically. We tackle two scenarios, where either the test data is privately available only to the tester or is publicly known in advance, even to the model creator. We investigate the soundness of the proposed approach using theoretical analysis and present statistical guarantees for the interactive test. Finally, we provide a cryptographic technique to automate fairness testing and certified inference with only black-box access to the model at hand while hiding the participants' sensitive data.

United States Air Force RSO Selects C3.ai as Strategic AI Platform
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Sept. 2, 2020 โ C3.ai, an enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) software provider for accelerating digital transformation, announced an agreement with the United States Air Force (USAF) Rapid Sustainment Office (RSO) to deliver and deploy the C3 AI Suite and C3.ai Readiness to support predictive analytics and maintenance across the Air Force enterprise. Predicting an aircraft weapon system's readiness and increasing fleet availability is essential to the U.S. military's operational success. RSO's Condition-Based Maintenance Plus (CBM) Program Office will use the C3 AI Suite and extend C3.ai Readiness to deploy an AI-based predictive maintenance application for the USAF to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of maintenance processes. The RSO will deploy this application to the HH-60 Pave Hawk aircraft weapon system and then assess further fielding to additional aircraft weapon systems. This initiative will also lay a foundation and framework for the enhancement of RSO's overall AI and machine learning capabilities. "C3.ai's proven technology has demonstrated success across multiple industries with its AI-based readiness application for predictive maintenance and logistics planning, making C3.ai an ideal partner to implement RSO's vision to increase mission readiness," said Nathan Parkerโ RSO Deputy Program Executive Officer.
India bans 118 more Chinese apps as border dispute escalates
India has banned 118 more Chinese apps in a stepped-up backlash over an increasingly bitter border showdown between the neighbours. India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Wednesday said the apps - including the mobile version of the popular video game PUBG and other services provided by China internet giant Tencent - promoted activities "prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order". India and China have been embroiled in a series of deadly clashes and showdowns on their Himalayan border in recent weeks. In June, 20 Indian soldiers were killed in hand-to-hand combat in the Ladakh region of the border. An Indian special forces member was killed in one of two incidents at the weekend.

The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) tasked Google with crafting a specialized artificial-intelligence model of information that could be overlayed with augmented-reality microscopes. Google's machine intelligence then helps doctors as they use the microscopes to map out the tumor, in an effort to determine its distinct makeup and cellular structure.
Microsoft unveils new tools to identify deepfake videos
Microsoft has launched a new tool to identify'deepfake' photos and videos that have been created to trick people into believing false information online. Deepfakes โ also known as synthetic media โ are photos, videos or audio files that have been manipulated using AI to show or say something that isn't real. There were at least 96 'foreign influenced' deep fake campaigns on social media targeting people in 30 countries between 2013 and 2019, according to Microsoft. To combat campaigns using this manipulated form of media, the tech giant has launched a new'Video Authenticator' tool that can analyse a still photo or video and provide a percentage chance that the media source has been manipulated. It works by detecting the blending boundary of the deepfake, and subtle fading or greyscale elements that might not be detectable by the human eye.

My father, Richard Zobel, who has died aged 81, was a pioneering computer scientist at the University of Manchester, birthplace of "Baby", the world's first stored-program computer. He rode the wave of the information technology revolution, starting in the early 1960s on military flight simulators for the electronics and equipment company Sperry's โ the valve analog computers they used ran so hot that he had to work in the cool of the night โ and in later years recommending improvements to the distant early warning system (Dews) protecting Indian Ocean coastlines from tsunami, but it was his 40-year academic career that defined his professional life. Richard was born in Lewisham, south London, the son of Joan, a dressmaker, and Norman Zobel, a car mechanic, just before the outbreak of the second world war, and narrowly escaped early tragedy when a water tank came through the ceiling and landed on his bed during the blitz. He went to Colfe's school (then a grammar school) on a scholarship, and graduated in 1963 in electrical engineering from London University, sponsored on his sandwich course by Sperry Gyroscope, a UK arm of the US company, which had headquarters in Bracknell. He met Lesley Winks at Peggy Spencer's ballroom dancehall in Penge, and they married in 1964.
US Air Force grapples with vexing problem of AI spoofing
The US Department of Defense (DoD) is worried that artificial intelligence programs might have serious and unknown vulnerabilities that adversaries could exploit. In particular, the Pentagon is worried that the technology could not only be hacked, but could be "spoofed". That is, it could be intentionally deceived into thinking that it sees objects โ or military targets โ that do not exist. The opposite is true as well: military targets could be erroneously ignored. That is one reason the US Air Force (USAF) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology founded the "MIT-Air Force AI Accelerator" in 2019.
US Marines to get 'Alpha' exoskeleton for super strength
The Marines are about to get their hands on an impressive bit of hardware: A wearable robotic exoskeleton that gives users super strength. The company delivering the unit, a defense-focused subsidiary of Sarcos Robotics developed the exoskeleton for industrial uses, including in energy and construction. An executive guide to the technology and market drivers behind the $135 billion robotics market. Still, in many ways, this is a return to roots for Sarcos. In 2000, the company was part of a storied class of DARPA grant recipients working on powered exoskeletons for defense purposes.
