Ayanna Howard Ayanna Howard is a Professor and Chair of the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech. Professor Howard is the director and founder of the Human-Automation Systems (HumAnS) Laboratory. Her research focuses on humanized intelligence, with a wide range of applications from Human-Robot Interaction to science-driven robotics. Prior to Georgia Tech, she led research projects at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Tachyum Opens US, EU and NATO Government Business Unit
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 8, 2020 -- Tachyum Inc.announced it is opening a business unit to serve U.S., EU and NATO member government customers of its Prodigy Universal Processor for demanding HPC, artificial intelligence and machine learning workloads. Although the company's primary market is hyperscale data centers, Tachyum's CEO Dr. Rado Danilak recognized that government agencies โ notably military and intelligence โ are early adopters of Prodigy. Its ultra-low-power, ultra-high-performance enables and vastly improves next-generation defense systems such as unmanned aircraft and underwater systems, cybersecurity, communications, analytics, and more. Prodigy's "unique attributes set the conditions to create a computing architecture fully aligned with the operational and strategic imperatives of our national strategy," said retired Army Lieutenant General Richard Zahner. He is a career electronic intelligence specialist who headed signals intelligence at the National Security Agency (NSA) and ended his career as Army deputy chief of staff for intelligence.
UAlbany harnessing artificial intelligence for winter storm forecasts
Now, a group of researchers at the University at Albany would like New Yorkers to think of winter snow storms when they hear the term AI. The school's Atmospheric Sciences Research Center just received a $2.4 million, five-year National Science Foundation grant to explore and develop ways that AI can better track and predict winter storms. The overall $20 million project, funded by the National Science Foundation, includes a total of seven schools and is titled the Institute for Research on Trustworthy AI in Weather, Climate and Coastal Oceanography. In short, they want to harness AI in which computer programs can "teach" themselves to make calculations and predictions based on the feedback or additional information that is constantly being fed to them. The idea is to be able to tailor winter weather predictions to people who can make immediate use of them, particularly transportation and utility services, said Chris Thorncroft, who directs UAlbany's atmospheric center and is co-leading the winter research.

US Army spent millions developing Star Wars-like walking robots
An insect-like machine with six individually powered legs that was intended for the battlefield received millions in US government funding during the 1980s. The project to create a fleet of real-life AT-AT walkers from Star Wars started in 1981 at Ohio State University, as the military searched for ways to traverse rough terrain that wheeled vehicles couldn't manage. Called the Adaptive Suspension Vehicle (ASV), the bizarre vehicle was part of a decade-long project which was eventually scrapped after receiving a reported $1million a year from Darpa between 1981 and 1990. The fate of the ASV is a mystery, with nobody knowing whether it is in storage somewhere or was scrapped decades ago. Professors Robert McGhee and Kenneth Waldron at Ohio State University wrote a scientific paper explaining their project in 1986.
Why the EU is Contemplating to Regulate High-Risk AI Technology?
The European Commission today unveiled its plan to strictly regulate artificial intelligence (AI) that it terms as high risk. The consortium of countries recently issued its long-anticipated white paper on AI. This document is a prequel to the new legislation and lists down the regulations that would govern technologies leading to global consequences. The paper lists 27 nation blocs which should have strict legal requirements for "high-risk" uses of AI. The consortium defines high risk as "a risk of injury, death or significant material or immaterial damage; that produce effects that cannot reasonably be avoided by individuals or legal entities", that span across healthcare, transportation, energy and government domains.

Malware, phishing and ransomware are constantly keeping security teams on their toes. But there is one risk to data security that cannot be stopped by cybersecurity software: human error. Unlike malicious threat actors, human error doesn't come and go as trends in the cyber landscape change. It is true of data breaches throughout history: indeed, a CybSafe study found that human error caused 90% of cyber data breaches in the UK during 2019. For organisations looking to protect intellectual property, or shield customer data, human error is the most dangerous threat of all.
Army Eyes Artificial Intelligence for PACE Planning
The U.S. Army wants an automated communications planning system. In the short term, researchers expect to use an "intelligent engine" but in the future, artificial intelligence will likely take over the task. Planning communications for different conditions is commonly known as PACE planning. The acronym stands for "primary, alternate, contingency and emergency" communications. Different situations call for different communications systems, explains Michael Brownfield, chief of the Army Future Capabilities Office within the Combat Capabilities Development Command's research organization formally named the Command and Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) Center.
Small sticker could hide a fighter jet from an enemy drone
Sticking a small patch on a large object like a plane can hide it from artificial intelligence systems trained to spot objects in drone footage. The technology could help conceal military assets from drone surveillance, say Ajaya Adhikari and Richard den Hollander at the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research. They and their colleagues used an AI that generates a pattern to confuse a drone surveillance system called the YOLO object detector, which spots military objects in aerial images.
