Pentagon's AI center to field new psychological operations tool

The Pentagon's clearinghouse on artificial intelligence is set to deliver a new tool to special operators to conduct psychological operations in near-real time in the information environment. The tool, called Entropy, is meant to reduce the cognitive burden on personnel performing military information support operations, an official said during a virtual presentation on Sept. 10 during the Department of Defense AI Symposium. In its simplest form, Entropy, under development by the Joint AI Center, will ingest data streams consisting of both text and video from what the military calls the information environment, or more commonly the internet, and provide the operators with summaries of trends based on the information. This is what officials described as the passive portion. An active portion, which is still under consideration, would build upon the passive component by taking the topics identified, feeding them into a language model, and downselecting messages for the team to review and score.


WIPO Launches Virtual Exhibition on Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) today launched "WIPO: AI and IP, A Virtual Experience," an immersive online exhibition using the latest 360 degree scanning technology to foster a more-comprehensive understanding of the relationship between IP policy and AI and the questions facing policymakers. The exhibition is the first of its kind at WIPO and offers visitors an interactive opportunity to discover this radical new technology, while exploring some of the many ways AI promises to transform culture and industry. "This exhibition is part of a larger process of WIPO's engagement with AI, where we are having a conversation among many stakeholders to explore and develop the questions arising from the impact of AI on IP policy," said WIPO Director General Francis Gurry. "We hope users find the exhibition both educational and entertaining." The exhibition was unveiled during the Sept. 16-18 WIPO Conference on the Global Digital Content Market, which explored the latest worldwide developments in the creative industries sector brought about by digital technologies such as AI.

US Navy moves a step closer to large unmanned robotic ships

Lockheed Martin has been selected as the main contractor to conduct a study on how to provide the US Navy with large, autonomous ships that can operate for extended periods without a crew. Part of the Navy's Large Unmanned Surface Vessel (LUSV) competition, Lockheed is working with Portland, Oregon-based shipbuilder Vigor Works, LLC, and will provide program management, platform integration, systems engineering, combat management, automation, and cybernetic expertise. With the biggest costs of building and operating a ship revolving around putting a crew aboard it, the US and other navies are very interested in creating unmanned or man-optional ships that can carry out both routine and extremely hazardous duties, leaving sailors to handle the sort of executive and complex tasks that still require a human touch. These autonomous ships of the future could be anything from small autonomous patrol craft, to sub hunters, to full-blown combat submarines. Such craft could, ideally, leave port on their own, remain at sea for months at a time, and then return autonomously for refit and maintenance.


Aidoc Adds $20M To Series B For AI-based Radiology Tools

Catching abnormalities on a medical image is important, but case backlogs often mean radiologists are cut short on how long they can spend with each one. Enter Aidoc, a 4-year-old Israel-based startup providing artificial intelligence tools for radiologists. The company secured an additional $20 million for its Series B funding led by Square Peg Capital, which initially led the round that began in April 2019. The new funds bring the Series B round to $47 million and gives Aidoc a total of $60 million raised to date, according to Crunchbase data. If the AI detects something, the tools alert the radiologist, Aidoc co-founder and CEO Elad Walach told Crunchbase News. "What has happened in recent history is that scanners have become cheaper, so now there is more imaging, which is overloading a radiologist's workflow," he said.

A Canadian man has been charged after he was found asleep at the wheel of a self-driving Tesla traveling over 93 mph down a highway in the province of Alberta, authorities said on Thursday. The July 9 incident occurred after authorities received a complaint that a Model S Tesla was speeding on a highway near the town of Ponoka, located about 60 miles south of Edmonton, according to a release by Alberta Royal Canadian Mounted police (RCMP). "The car appeared to be self-driving, traveling over 140km/h, with both front seats completely reclined and both occupants appearing to be asleep," the RCMP said in a statement.
